The Problem of Leucoderma
January 6, 2009
Everyone wants to have fair and glowing skin. People spent lots of money on becoming fair. But there is one type of fairness which no body wants. This fairness is loss of melanin pigment due to Leucoderma. Leucoderma is a skin disease where the skin losses the ability to form melanin pigment. Melanin pigment provides natural color to skin. The color of this pigment ranges from creamy yellow to brown. This pigment also contains the ability to protect the skin from harmful ultra-violet radiations. The darker the pigment the more is its ability to protect from UV rays.
But as the skin losses it natural ability to form melanin pigment due to leucoderma, skin becomes exposed to UV rays. The exposure increases the symptoms of leucoderma. This problem is hardly hereditary. It can happen to anyone and at any time even if the person has normal melanin formation ability. The major problem with this disease is that people think it is contagious which is completely untrue.
It can begin in the skin of any part of the body and then spreads to other parts of the body. Leucoderma affects only the epidermis of the skin, therefore, problems like change in blood or urine composition does not occur.
This disease hardly harms the individual except that skin becomes more exposed to pollution and harmful chemicals. The causes of leucoderma are unknown. But it is assumed that it is caused due to mistaken identity. The immune system of the body takes melanin pigment of the skin as a foreign substance and starts destroying it.
The individuals with this problem should take proper care of themselves. Early diagnosis of the disease helps in recovery to larger extent. Take the prescribed medicines on time during the start of the disease itself. Always keep a black umbrella handy when out in sun.
Try to keep record of your day to day eating habit to know which eatable creates problem for you. Avoid junk food, tea, coffee, alcohol and egg to prevent the spread of the disease to other body parts. Don’t use soaps with harsh chemicals. Homeopathy by far is considered one of the best treatments for leucoderma. But it is also most effective during initial stages of the disease only. So start taking medications suggested by the doctor as early possible.
