The Problem Of Winter Dryness

November 25, 2008

Healthy and glowing skin is a dream of every person. But winter dryness of skin can make it a nightmare. Skin dryness is a very common problem during winters. It makes it important to take proper care of skin. Otherwise, skin can become dry and scaly, marked by flakiness and stretching. People with all skin types face this problem but it is worse for people with dry skin. Winter dryness is found in people of all ages. The common sites for dryness are upper arms, thighs and lower legs but face, neck and hands also show signs of dryness.

Itching is the main problem, faced by people due to winter dryness. Itching disrupts all the daily activities. Scratching and rubbing the itching parts is not advisable, it can make the affected area thick and rough. When the dryness continues for a long time the skin cracks and results in painful fissures. Sometimes, the cracked and chapped skin may become red and result in dermatitis. Then, it is wise to consult a dermatologist before the condition aggravates to pus-filled bacterial infection. If a person suffers from severe dryness, it may be due to genetic factors or hormonal imbalance.

Our skin naturally looses moisture during winter. But activities like use of excess soap-water, exposure to harsh chemicals, natural aging and some kind of skin diseases helps the skin to loose the skin oils faster. As the upper layer of skin looses protective skin oils, it contracts and results in small cracks. But taking daily care of skin can actually help in reducing this problem and making the skin soft and supple.

Drinking sufficient amount of water reduces dryness. Wash your face with soap-free face wash. Use of soaps should be minimal. Daily and frequent use of moisturizer is important for keeping the skin away from dryness.

Some home remedies can also be used for removing winter dryness. Mix one teaspoon of honey with a teaspoon of milk. Apply this mixture on skin for 15 minutes and wash it away with warm water. Mix equal parts of olive, mustard and sesame oil and use it as a body massage. Apply a paste of papaya and avocado on skin. Wash it after 20 minutes. These remedies are helpful in removing winter dryness if used regularly. Always ensure to eat lots of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin A as it is good for repairing skin.
