Tips To Help Prevent Fluid Retention

July 20, 2009

Fluid retention is one of the main issues women face especially close to their period and is the main reason why their weight fluctuates every few weeks. Apart from the menstrual cycle, water retention could be caused by various other factors. Diet being one of the key factors, a sedentary lifestyle & heavy consumption of alcohol could also cause your body to retain fluid and make you feel bloated. Any of these other factors could also easily affect men or post menopausal women.

Having knowledge of the causes helps one understand what needs to be changed.

Fluid retention does not mean that you should stop drinking water; in fact dehydration is one of the main causes of fluid retention. So, consume more water to help you cleanse your system.

Avoid excess salt in your food, also, stay away from packaged foods such soups or instant noodles. These are always very high in sodium and leave you feeling bloated.

There are a lot of food items that you can eat which work as diuretics. Chewing on celery sticks is one of the easiest ways to get rid of excess water from your body. Other foods such as carrots, bell peppers, tomatoes and leafy greens are also effective in reducing water retention. So, eat more salads, they will help you in more ways than one. Fruits will also have the same effect; chew on the whole fruit as opposed to fruit juices.

Try eating fish as compared to red meats which are lighter on your body. Fish is also rich in calcium and this helps get rid of the fluid imbalance.

Get more exercise! Water retention is more than just gaining a few pounds before your period; it can make you look all puffy and swollen and cause serious health problems if you don’t change your habits. A simple exercise routine like jogging or a brisk walk combined with healthy eating habits can easily get you going.

Too much of alcohol also is another cause of your body retaining fluid. Make an effort to reduce intake, this will also prove beneficial to your overall health.

If you are facing serious problems, and no matter what you do, you always seem to complain of puffiness around your eyes or fingers look swollen everyday, consult your doctor who can prescribe you a diuretic pill and give you the required medical guidance and advice.
