Sensitivity of teeth is a condition where you experience a sudden shooting pain in one or more teeth. This usually happens in cold weather where you are breathing in cold air or when you eat something hot and immediately follow it up with a cold beverage. Teeth become sensitive when the inside layer gets exposed due to unhealthy gums. When exposed, the nerve endings get easily targeted by food or cold air. Sensitivity of teeth is usually caused due to poor oral hygiene.
Sometimes, taking too much care of your teeth could also cause them to become sensitive. How? Some people brush their teeth 3 to 4 times in a day which can result in loss of tooth enamel. Using harsh strokes when brushing can cause damage to teeth. The trick is to hold the brush by its tip and not in the center. Don’t grip the brush but hold it in between your index and middle finger, supporting it with your thumb, just like holding a pen when writing. This way you avoid applying too much pressure when brushing. Use a soft bristle toothbrush.
Look for toothpastes which are specially made for sensitive teeth. Most mouthwashes which are available over the counter can also make your teeth sensitive. Avoid using these or look for mouthwashes especially meant for sensitive teeth. Look for ointments that can be massaged on the gums before bedtime. These are available over the counter and help maintain healthy gums. For a few days, avoid drinking beverages which are either too hot or too cold. Also, avoid eating citrus fruits or foods that are acidic. Most people have a habit of grinding their teeth in their sleep. This can be due to stress and happens when you are deep in sleep. The only way to control this is to get a tooth guard, which needs to be worn when sleeping. It prevents the constant friction between teeth and protects them from unnecessary loss of tooth enamel.
Avoid using teeth whitening products. These contain ingredients which can strip your teeth of the protective layer. If after a few days of trying all of the above measures you are still in pain, visit your dentist for proper guidance.
