A good posture in your younger days will account for lack of pain in your joints as you grow older. The way you sit or stand reflects in the way you walk and indirectly is a reflection of your over all health. 98 percent of the population suffers from chronic back pain and in most cases the reason for this is a bad posture.

The first thing you need to do to improve your posture is to sleep on a firm mattress. If the bed that you lay on for 8 hours of the night is not firm or is lumpy; you are most likely to suffer from a back ache as you are not sleeping in the right posture. Trade your mattress in for a new one. The pillow you sleep on also matters. Do not sleep on a pillow that is too soft or too hard. Feather pillows are best left to the birds. Use a cotton pillow that helps to support your head and neck through the night. You neck must not be on the pillow, just your head. Your head must be elevated 4 inches above your body.

The chair that you sit on must give your back the support it requires. When you are sitting your back must be well rested on the back rest of the chair. If you are slouching then you need to change your chair or your posture.

When you are standing you must make sure that the weight of your body is equally distributed on both your feet. If you are standing with your weight on either one of your feet you are likely to suffer from a back pain as well as a leg pain at night. Doing this regularly will lead to chronic back and leg ache.

Always stand tall with your chest held out and your knees in. This helps to improve your posture. Always keep your stomach pulled in tight to avoid a sagging tummy.
