The onset of fever is the reaction of the body to get rid of the outside invader. It sets its own fighting mechanism in place which shows up as fever. Body is busy fighting out microbes, why worry so much if temperature of the body is 100 degrees C. Let it be for a day or two, it is bound to come down on its own. But, it is easier said than done. We are used to going in for medicines at the slightest hint of fever.
However, one cannot always ignore fever, especially if it is the case of baby. There is no need to despair, one can get rid of fever or manage low grade fever and associated symptoms with these simple home remedies.
Effective Home Remedies For Fever
Treat The Cause
See what has caused it in the first place. Try to treat that cause. If it is due to sore throat, look after the well being of your throat, fever will automatically go away. If it is due to some infection or wound, treat that and get rid of fever.
Holy Basil (Tulasi)
This home remedy works in most types of fevers, more so due to flu and colds. For a day’s requirement take three cups of water, put 10 to 15 leaves of holy basil.
If you do not have fresh leaves, dried ones will do. Add to this 5 to 6 crushed black peppercorns. Let it come to a boil. Add some sweetener which could be honey, jaggery or sugar and divide it into three doses and take them thrice a day.
An important remedy for any type of fever is drinking plenty of water. Check the color of your urine, it is likely to be yellow. The ideal color of urine is a bit pale and not yellow. Drink enough water, the color of your urine will indicate whether you are drinking enough water or not.
Water will flush out all the toxins out of your body, which your body desperately wants to get rid of.
Keep on monitoring fever regularly, especially for infants and children. There can be a sudden jump in the fever, and fever can suddenly go into one’s head triggering a convulsion. A convulsion can damage brain, we have to avoid it at any cost. So, if you keep a check on fever, you can start hydrotherapy if fever starts going upwards of 100 degrees C in case of children and 102 degrees C in case of adults.
It will take at least an hour for the fever to start coming down. Take two or more small towels, dip them in a bucket of fresh water, squeeze and put on forehead and both hands changing frequently with a fresh one. If the fever does not respond to wet towels, you will have to consider making the patient sit in a tub of water till there is considerable drop in temperature.
Eat Light Foods
Your whole body including your digestive system becomes sluggish during fever. Do not load it with food, eat light and lesser in quantity. Your body will recover faster if you fast for a day.
On the contrary if you feel hungry, do eat food, but stick to light diet.
Drink Fresh Juices
Juices will give you nourishment and are easy to digest. They will increase your immunity which your fighting body needs badly.
Go for vitamin C rich juices like that of an orange or sweet lime. If you have a sore throat, try adding sugar to neutralize sour taste. Most of the people do not find their throat going worse when they take sweetened juice.
