It is important to make sure that you do not indulge in sexual activities with more than one partner as this is the greatest risk.
Make sure that when you are indulging in activity of sexual nature that you are using protection. There are great benefits of using a condom. There is no guarantee that you will be risk free but you are definitely lowering your chances of contracting the disease.
If you are worried that you may have already contracted an STD then you must make sure that you get yourself checked by a doctor. Convince your doctor to get checked too. You must get these checkups done regularly.
You must be very careful and avoid the consumption of alcohol or drugs before any sexual contact. Remember that when you are intoxicated most of your judgments get impaired and this leads to great disasters at times. The best thing you can do is to avoid using substances that lead to intoxication and to avoid the use of alcohol when you are out with friends and acquaintances. When you are intoxicated you may not be able to take the right precautions to keep yourself safe and may contract an STD.

Always make sue that you use disposable needles and break the needles that you use. Be very careful at blood donation drives and clinic. Take precautions and make sure that the technician taking your blood does the same.
