Treating Spondilitis effectively with herbs

Spondilits or Ankylosing Spondylitis has become a common disease today plaguing many people. A disease that used to ail persons slightly older now, affects persons in their 20s and 30s. This is mostly due to the sedentary lifestyles and improper postures while working hours at a stretch at computers. It is a long lasting disease causing inflammation of the joints between the spine and the pelvis.

The symptoms of spondilitis are usually pain in the lower back that seems to increase at night or early in the morning. Neck pain, hip pain, stiffness in the lower back, fatigue and heel pain are some symptoms of spondilitis. Though spondilitis can be treated well by adopting proper (read ‘erect’) positions while working, using a good chair (read ‘firm’), lying flat on the ground (without a mattress) and doing regular (read ‘daily’) exercise, most people tend to become careless and avoid these simple measures.

Herbal remedies for spondilitis trace back to the Ayurveda belief that rheumatic pains occur due to toxins (aama) in the intestines. Also, the kinetic energy of the body (vata) needs to be controlled to effectively treat spondilitis aches and pains.

Common herbs that work almost immediately for painful spondilitis are usually extracts of turmeric, dry ginger, fenugreek, guggul, ashwagandha, shallaki (boswellia) or giloy (tinospora). Their use helps considerably.
·Dry ginger (zingiber officincile) or sonth is an anti-inflammatory herb and helps in spondilitis complaints.
·Guggul (commiphora mukul) is another anti-inflammatory herb that stops largely the progress of spondilitis.
·Shallaki (boswellia serrata) is a well-known herb that relieves pain without any side effects.
·Nirgundi (vitex negundo) controls pain and inflammation in spondilitis.
·Giloy (tinospora cordifolio) also known as ‘amrita’ in Ayurveda is quite helpful in treating rheumatoid pains.
·Ashwagandha (withania somnifera) known as Indian ginseng in the West is an anti-inflammatory herb and is a very useful herbal remedy for spondilitis.

Herbal remedies for spondilitis, a form of inflammatory arthritis abound in plenty. Just try them for your aching neck, back and spine and, feel the difference!
