Depending on the types of essential oils used, the limbic system reacts differently and in turn stimulates various body functions like heart rate, blood pressure, immune system and even memory and digestion. Moreover, these essential oils are generally absorbed by the skin and provide the normal benefits of massage.

This is the most important type of aromatherapy as far as healthy living is concerned. In this therapy medical conditions are first diagnosed and then the practitioner decides on the essential oils that are to be used. Like most of the alternative forms of medicine, in aromatherapy too there is no common treatment for all.

It is highly individualistic and for the same ailment different persons may be treated with different types and doses of essential oils. The treatment may include inhalation of the oils or even oral doses. However, in both cases, especially in the oral administration of the oils, the doses must be taken under strict supervision of the registered practitioners.

Olfactory Aromatherapy And Psychoaromatherapy

Since the inhalation of the fragrant oils stimulates the limbic system, it is often used for mental peace and stress removal. The calming effect of the essential oils is used for the purpose. It is especially recommended for those people suffering from great levels of mental stress, depression, fatigue, etc. Aromatherapy is also used for treatment of mood disorders and while treating psychological ailments. This type is generally referred to as psychoaromatherapy.
