It is said that people who floss every morning are considered to be very health conscious. Think about it, this can actually be true! To have the patience to stand in front of the mirror for a good 5 minutes to floss, wow, that does require commitment.
Oral hygiene could easily be one of the most neglected health habits around the world.
As kids, we all had our parents yell at us for not brushing in the night. Brush twice daily, is what we were taught as kids, but as adults, not many of us actually follow this.
The basic of good dental care is to get back into the habit of brushing morning and evening. Actually, brushing at night is more important than brushing in the morning. Particles of what ever we eat during the day can be left behind in the mouth and can result in tooth decay and cavities.
You decide what is better, a root canal or brushing every night. I think everyone will choose the latter. Having said that, please don’t leave out brushing every morning, you don’t want to be a social outcast because of your mouth odor!
Make sure to rinse your mouth after you eat. We all keep eating through out the day, rinsing after meals helps remove the food particles immediately and prevents tooth decay.
Try keeping a mouth wash with you and use this in the middle of the day to help you feel fresh and maintain oral hygiene. Alternately, look for chewing gums which help maintain oral hygiene.
If flossing in the morning is time consuming, try doing this in the night, or at least twice or thrice a week.
Choose a toothpaste that is actually good for teeth and not because it tastes better than the other one. Look for toothpastes which have fluoride as it helps maintain strong teeth.
Change your toothbrush every 3 months. This is very important and almost everyone will agree that this is the most neglected. Toothbrushes have a life, just because the bristles still look as good as new, does not mean that you can continue using the same toothbrush for the next 6 months.
Also make sure to visit the dentist at least once in a year for a clean up and a general check up.
