I’m sure all of us overeat once at some point in our lives, at Christmas lunch, on Easter or even on your birthday. Overeating once in a way is alright as long as it’s not a habit and doesn’t become an uncontrollable compulsive behavior.
When your overeating becomes compulsive and you feel that you cannot control it then or when you need to stop eating but you are completely powerless and helpless about your eating habits then you have a binge eating disorder.
Stress and fatigue could be the primary factors leading to binge eating. Other negative emotions like unhappiness, anger and jealousy could also make you overeat. Binge eating lasts for about two hours but most binge eaters binge on and off during the entire day. This disorder usually takes place even if you are not hungry and continues long after you have had your fill. Most binge eaters stuff themselves with food, rarely tasting or relishing their food.
Binge eaters never exercise, hence making them obese and overweight. Due to this they generally become depressed and are filled with guilt and disgust. They tend to get worried about what will happen to them because of their habit and beat themselves up for lack of self-control. Binge eating is not restricted to women only but also affects a number of men. This disorder usually develops during late adolescence and early adulthood. Binge eating may also cause heart problems due to excess weight and insomnia.
Fortunately, there are ways to control binge eating. There are a number of treatments available today which will help you overcome this disorder. Getting rid of this disorder is not as easy as you think and could take time and lots of effort from the binge eater and from their family. Unlike other addictions you cannot avoid or stop eating completely. So the first step is to start eating healthy nutritious food. Making sure your getting food with the right amount of nutrients is very important. So you need to choose healthy food.
Other things you can do to avoid binge eating is eating a healthy breakfast every morning. Avoid tempting and fatty foods like desserts, junk food and unhealthy snacks. Other ways you could control your eating habits is to stop dieting, exercise regularly to stay fit and try to lower your stress levels. Binge eating is a disorder which all of us need to stay away from and thanks to modern treatments we can avoid binge eating.
