What to Eat and Avoid when you are Pregnant

When a woman is pregnant she begins to crave certain food. This is the body’s natural reaction and satisfying the craving will keep the woman content. This is very important for a pregnant woman. However one must keep in mind that while certain foods benefit the body there are others that may harm the mother and the baby and hence you need to make wise choices with the food that you eat.

Eating 5 servings of fruits daily will be beneficial to your health. Fruits are loaded with vitamins and minerals as well as are high in water content. Foods that are high in starch content are also very good for the body. Potatoes, rice and breads, pastas and beets are good for your health. Proteins that are acquired from fish, beans and lentils also benefit the body as well as the skin and hair. It is absolutely necessary that you eat a fiber rich diet as it will prevent constipation. Apples, whole grain and a variety of vegetables are rich in fiber content. When you are pregnant you also need to increase your intake of calcium. Milk and dairy products are a rich source of calcium.

The doctor will prescribe taking folic acid, vitamin D and calcium supplements during the entire term of your pregnancy and for a few months after you deliver. These supplements will strengthen your bones and prevent defects in the fetus.

In order to keep your unborn child safe there are certain foods that you must avoid. Though fish is considered to be good due to its protein content you must avoid eating shark fish, any shell fish and tuna. Avoid eating raw eggs and raw and processed meats completely. These foods will transfer bacteria into your body. You must restrict your intake of caffeine based drinks as they are harmful to the body and they are the main cause of low birth rate.
