When the spinal column starts narrowing, it exerts a pressure on the spinal cord. This is known as spinal stenosis which usually occurs in aged people. With age the disks lose their lubrication and they become drier and start to bulge. Simultaneously, the bones and ligaments of the spine also start thickening and grow larger due to inflammation or arthritis. Spinal stenosis is mainly caused by bone diseases, tumors in the spine, herniated or slipped disk and injury that causes pressure on the spinal cord or the nerve roots.
There is numbness or cramping and pain in the thighs, buttocks, back, neck, shoulders, arms and calves of the legs. Weakness may also be felt in part of the arms or legs. Some patients also lose control over their bowel movements. Generally the symptoms are only on one side of the body but both the sides can also be involved. People with spinal stenosis are unable to walk or stand for long periods.
Ways of Treating Spinal Stenosis
Aerobic exercises are the best for spinal stenosis. The most effective exercise is riding a stationary bicycle. Keep your spine flexed in a forward position when doing this exercise. This will help to maintain the flexibility of the joints and increase spinal strength. Walking on an inclined treadmill is also good for improving muscle strength. You can also do stretching exercises that will strengthen the muscles of the lower back and the stomach. This will do much to alleviate the symptoms of pain and numbness.
Restrict Your Activities
If standing or walking for a length of time increases your pain then avoid doing so. Sitting down and leaning forward relives the pain considerably.
When you sit for long periods, you should see that your lower back is well supported. Do not exert yourself unnecessarily when in pain. Rest as much as you can and only perform those chores that can be easily managed without pain.
Use A Firm Mattress
You should start sleeping on a firm mattress that will keep your back erect when you lay on your back. A soft mattress causes the back to arch which puts pressure on the nerve roots and aggravates the pain. Use pillows under your knees for better support. If you happen to be overweight it is most crucial to reduce your weight as it puts undue pressure and stress on the back as well as the joints.
Fill an ice bag with ice cubes and place it on the painful area for ten to twenty minutes. The chillness will not only reduce the inflammation but it will also reduce the pain considerably. You can apply the bag whenever the pain becomes intense or unbearable.
