Cancer of the skin is most common of all cancers. It usually affects those people whose melanin pigments in the skin are low i.e. fair skinned people. The rate of skin cancer affected people is on the rise in United States. It is also caused by exposure to sun rays over a long period of time.
It is important to know the signs of skin cancer. So that it can be noticed and diagnosed early. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment will help cure skin cancer. Skin Cancer is of 3 types. If you notice a raised, smooth pearly bump on the skin it is most likely to be basal cell carcinoma. Common sites are head, neck and shoulders.
If there is thick patch red in color, which is crusting and becoming scaly then it can be squamous cell carcinoma. Change in shape and size of a pre existing mole points out to melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous of the three types of skin cancer. If not treated early it is fatal.
You should get alert if you see any such signs. Any change in the color, size, and shape of an already existing lesion should never be neglected. Any wound, which is not healing and has started to show ulceration, can be a sign of skin cancer. Also any old wound which has suddenly started bleeding and which is painless also points to skin cancer of that area of skin.
Elevated lesions with fungating margins or irregular borders should make you alert. Rapidly changing color and spreading lesion should not be neglected at any cost.
A tumor or mass could also be seen over the skin. There may be ulceration and bleeding in the center. The tumor may be painless. As skin cancer affects the epidermis i.e. the outermost layer of the skin, it is easily seen. So it can be easily detected by the affected person himself. Hence, it is important to know the characteristic changes in the skin, so as to identify skin cancer and take treatment immediately. This can help you to avoid further complications.
Proper treatment at the right time can prevent any lesion from becoming cancerous and it can also cure the detected skin cancer.
