Arthritis Diet

Arthritis is a condition that usually affects the elder people, but unhealthy lifestyle and nutritional deficiencies can make a person, an arthritis sufferer even at a younger age. This health condition is mainly categorized into osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. According to statistics, almost forty million people in the United States, suffer from this condition.

Arthritic patients can have tough times in their daily life and can experience persistent pain. They may find it difficult to perform their normal daily routines with ease. Though, there is no permanent cure for the condition called arthritis, an alteration in diet can give significant relief to the arthritis patients. Some useful guidelines on arthritis diet for the patients have been given below.

The chief features of arthritis disease are – inflammation, pain and stiffness. It has been discovered that these main symptoms of the arthritis condition, can be reduced with certain foods. Similarly, certain foods can also be responsible for flare ups. Thus, we see that diet and arthritis are closely linked and hence the patient needs to take care of his/her diet.

Arthritis diet includes the consumption of sufficient amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids as they are anti-inflammatory in nature and may give relief from inflammation and decrease the stiffness as well as joint pain. Hence, at least 2 servings of oily fish such as sardines, salmon, and mackerel should be consumed by the patients to fulfill their Omega-3 needs. Nuts and seeds like walnuts, flax seeds, and pumpkin seeds are good sources of Omega-3 for the vegetarians and the vegans.

A diet meant for arthritis patients also includes the use of a wide variety of vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, kale, broccoli, carrots, radish, and parsnips. Green vegetables like kale and spinach contain the antioxidants called zeaxanthin and lutein, which ease the joint inflammations and give relief to the arthritis patients. Turmeric, ginger and spices are also anti-inflammatory in nature and hence should be included in the arthritis diet.

Now let us see the foods that may deteriorate the condition and cause flare ups in the arthritis patients. Vegetables belonging to the solanum family may not be suitable for the patients and hence should not be included in the arthritis diet. Smoking, tobacco, dairy products, caffeinated as well as carbonated beverages, and foods rich in saturated fat like baked foods, fatty meats, etc can aggravate the arthritis condition and hence should be avoided.
