Know About Some Basic Causes Of Carotid Artery Blockage

One of the serious yet lesser known situations with respect to the heart is blockage of the carotid artery. These are arteries that carry the main blood supply to the brain and any blockage in it could lead to devastating results.

Carotid artery blockage is commonly caused by formation of plaque, which leads to thickening of the arteries with time. Following are some of the basic causes of this condition.

This is a vascular disease that is slow yet progressive in nature, often occurring right from childhood. Under this condition, the innermost layer of the arteries is lined with fatty deposits, which often lead to production of plaque.

Plaque is essentially a mix of muscle cells, fatty deposits, calcium, cholesterol and cellular waste. When this plaque lines the inner layer of the arteries, it causes narrowing of the arteries, which results in blocking flow of blood. Carotid artery blockage is the result of such plaque formation in the carotid arteries.

Additional factors causing such blockage

While plaque formation is the basic cause of carotid artery blockage, it does not happen overnight but is a result of various factors. These include improper diet leading to excessive cholesterol and obesity, bad habits like smoking and excessive drinking, health problems like diabetes and of course the universal factor of aging.

Whilst these factors do not directly lead to the syndrome, they attribute towards the speed with which this disease progresses in the body.

Additionally, factors like family history, race, genetic factors, hypertension and general lack of exercise or good living also attribute towards this problem. It is important to note that carotid artery blockage commonly occurs in men rather than women.

It is also important to note that these additional factors do not directly cause the problem but only accelerate its progress in individuals already facing the problem or having a history of such problems.

It is very difficult to determine whether or not an individual is suffering from such a problem, unless actual symptoms manifest. Under the circumstances, this disease becomes more dangerous than any other. The best way to avoid carotid artery blockage is to take stock of your life and implement lifestyle changes that adopt healthy living.
