During the initial few months of pregnancy, women face various health related problems, with digestive trouble being one of them. Constipation, heartburn, indigestion and flatulence are a few common digestive problems faced by women in early pregnancy phase.
It is very common for almost all the pregnant women to face one or more of these issues during the initial few months of pregnancy, and there is no need to worry about them. In this article, we shall discuss about a few common digestion problems in early pregnancy.

Constipation is one of the most common problems faced by women during early pregnancy. The problem mainly occurs due to change in the hormones of a woman. This hormonal change does not allow the bowel movement to take place in an efficient manner.
The problem of constipation may also arise due to developing uterus. Further, women are often recommended iron supplements, which result in drying of stools, thus causing constipation. Drinking plenty of water, consuming fiber rich foods and restricting the intake of processed foods would help in dealing with the problem of constipation.

Flatulence is a problem associated with passing of gas. This is a common digestive problem during pregnancy, which occurs due to accumulation of gas in large intestine. This problem does not cause much discomfort or pain, but is quite embarrassing.
It is suggested to avoid the intake of certain foods like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, fried foods, beans and onions to avoid the formation of gas in the stomach.
There are many women who face the problem of indigestion during early pregnancy. The problem occurs due to consumption of unhealthy foods. Also, an improper diet plan may lead to the problem of indigestion. A pregnant woman needs to be very careful about her diet.

She should focus on the intake of healthy and nutritious foods to avoid indigestion. Further, it is essential for a pregnant woman to plan her meals appropriately. She should divide the entire day’s meals into five or six small portions, instead of commonly consuming three big meals in a day. This would definitely be of immense help in preventing indigestion.
Heartburn is one of the common digestion problems in early pregnancy. The problem is generally not harmful for the baby and the mother, but poses lot of discomfort. The physical and hormonal changes during pregnancy are mainly responsible for heartburn.
Heartburn, which is also known as acid reflux or acid indigestion, causes burning sensation extending from breastbone’s bottom to lower throat. Drinking plenty of fluids, eating short meals and avoiding the intake of unhealthy foods would help in dealing with heartburn during pregnancy.
Also it is suggested to avoid eating anything at least two hours before going to bed and sleep with several pillows so as to elevate the upper body area.
