Controlling Asthma During Pregnancy

Many women suffer from asthma during their pregnancy. You can have your first attack of asthma while you are pregnant. If you already have asthma, then there is a chance that your condition can worsen during pregnancy if timely care is not provided.

The symptoms of asthma include wheezing, coughing and difficulty in breathing. Untreated asthma during pregnancy can cause conditions of high blood pressure and hypertension leading to preeclampsia. The mother will also suffer from uncontrolled vomiting.

The condition of asthma affects not only the mother but also the unborn baby too. An attack of asthma may deprive the growing fetus of its rightful share of oxygen. This can lead to further complications like premature labor, low birth weight of the baby and even fetal death.

Proper and timely treatment is very much needed to control the condition of asthma during pregnancy. A specific plan of action is to be followed for asthma management.

Asthma might be caused due to certain allergies like pollen, dust or animal fur. It is necessary to identify these allergens and avoid them as much as possible. Smoking also aggravates the condition of asthma. Quit smoking and stay away from people who smoke.

Stay away from people who have cold, flu and other infections which are contagious. Upper respiratory infections like bronchitis can cause asthma. Do not eat food items like peanuts which can cause allergic reactions. Asthma can also be caused by genetic reasons.

Physicians prescribe the use of many medications to control asthma. Inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled or oral steroids are usually prescribed. These medications are safe and do not pose any side effects. Taking allergy shots during pregnancy is not a recommended procedure.

If you are already under any medications for asthma, do not stop them immediately as it may lead to shortage of oxygen supply for the baby. Do discuss with your health care provider on whether to continue with the medications or not.

Fetal movements are also to be continuously monitored. Any abnormal behavior of the fetus during the time of asthma attacks is to be immediately looked into.

The condition of asthma during pregnancy should be dealt with seriously. By taking proper care and appropriate medications you can definitely tackle the problem of asthma and thus enjoy a healthy pregnancy.
