Kidneys are responsible for flushing out the toxins from the body though urination. Renal or kidney failure can result in retention of fluids in the body which causes the fluid to build up in heart, lungs and other organs which can prove devastating for the health of the body.

Due to renal failure, the waste gets accumulated in the body. Renal failure is a gradual process and end stage renal failure requires dialysis to get rid of the toxins from the body.

Diet for renal failure includes restrictions on the amount of protein and phosphorus intake along with reduction in sodium. Such a diet enables healthy maintenance of electrolytes, fluids and minerals in patients. It is vital to restrict fluid intake in cases of renal failure because such patients urinate very little. As a result, the fluids start accumulating in the body.

Carbohydrates intake needs to be reduced for obese people. If you are advised a low-protein diet, fruits, grains, vegetables and breads can be consumed to maintain essential energy level without building up on proteins. Sugar, honey, pies, jelly, etc can also be taken by such patients.

Fats are an extremely rich source of calories. But precaution must be taken as fats have the tendency to accumulate in arteries if taken in excess quantities. It can result in heart problems.

Before the commencement of dialysis, a low protein diet is advised. But once the dialysis starts, more amounts of proteins are required to replace the loss of muscles and tissues. Poultry products, pork, fish, etc are recommended to patients on dialysis.

Calcium and Phosphorus levels need adequate attention as high phosphorus level can cause low calcium making the bones brittle and itching in the body. Fruits and vegetables can be consumed as they offer good amount of energy and consist less amounts of phosphorus and calcium. To compensate for the loss of calcium, supplements can be taken.

Fluid intake needs o be monitored carefully as once the kidneys fail, fluid starts building up in the body. The advice of a dietician or a doctor should be taken to assess the amount of fluid intake in a day. To overcome the problems of excessive thirst, it is advised to cut down on salty foods.
