Different Types Of Pregnancy TestsA pregnancy test is a method by which you can determine whether you have conceived or not. In today’s world there are many such tests which a woman can undergo to confirm her pregnancy. To confirm the pregnancy one can choose from many easily available over the counter pregnancy test kits . In another method one will have to undergo certain physiological tests or physical examinations, in order to confirm their pregnancy. The latter method is done by a trained medical practitioner.

Given below are the various types of pregnancy tests which will help let you know whether you are pregnant or not.

Different Types Of Pregnancy Tests

Home Pregnancy Test

A home pregnancy test or HPT, is a method which is used by most women to confirm their pregnancy. This is basically a urine test and is based on the levels of the hormone hCG( Human Chronic Gonadotropin) in the urine.

hCG is a hormone which is produced in the body of a woman during her pregnancy.  hCG usually shows up in the urine usually after 2 weeks of conception. A HPT can give a positive or negative result based on the presence or absence of this hormone in the urine.

There are basically two types of  HPT Kits which are available in the market. The first type of kit uses a dipstick, the color of which acts as an indicator of your pregnancy. If the dipstick turns orange on dipping in fresh urine, then it can be considered as an indication that you are pregnant.

The second type of test makes use of a strip or card with 2 slots, the first a small circular one and the second a rectangular one. In the small slot labeled ‘S’, place 3 -4 drops of urine with the help of the dropper provided in the kit. This should be done only after keeping the pregnancy test card in a flat surface. After about 5 minutes, you can read the results.

The long rectangular slot in the test card will have two labels namely C (Control) and T(Test). If there are violet bands formed at both the C and T labels, then it indicates that the test is positive. At the same time, if only one band is formed at the C region, then it shows a negative result.

The color of the band formed can vary from light pink to violet depending on the amount of hCG present in the urine. To get accurate results, you should use the first urine sample obtained in the morning, as it contains large quantities of hCG.

Blood Test

If you are not satisfied with the results of your HPT, then you can go for a blood test. This quantitative test which is performed at laboratories can give an accurate reading of your hCG levels, thus determining whether you are pregnant or not.

This test can give accurate results after just one week of conception, even before you have reached the actual date of your monthly period. The results can be obtained an hour after you have given your blood sample for analysis. However, these tests are a bit costly as compared to HPTs.

Pelvic Examination

A pelvic examination is a physical method of confirming whether you are pregnant or not. This test is done about 6 weeks after you have missed your periods. Here, using the fingers, your doctor will perform an internal examination of the vagina, thus accessing the  level of uterine enlargement, thereby confirming your pregnancy.
