Drinking While Pregnant

Drinking while pregnant can be very dangerous for you as well as your developing baby. Yet may women, who are addicted to it, find it very difficult to avoid alcohol during their pregnancy. They argue that little amount of alcohol would not harm them. It is true that little amount of alcohol would not harm them but even one ounce of alcohol would harm their fetus.

Alcohol may affect your baby with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASDs). In US nearly 40, 000 children are born with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, every year. Alcohol may cause birth defects, mental disorder and your child’s nervous system can be severely affected. Your child may also face learning disabilities.

One of the major effects of alcohol on pregnant women is that it increases the risk of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder) in your child. If you are looking for a healthy child, you should strictly abstain from alcohol during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If your child is affected with ADHD you will not be able to forgive yourself for consuming alcohol while pregnant. ADHD children are unable to pay attention in their classes and are unable to remember their tasks. They behave like abnormal children and get irritated and annoyed on silly matters or without any reasons. Some children with ADHD become violent and aggressive too.

In some cases, the effects of alcohol may not occur for years. But the problem remains in the system which can be seen later on. If you drink during your pregnancy with male fetus, your son is likely to suffer from fertility at later stage.

Alcohol is one of the major causes of miscarriage. Miscarriage is a frightening word for pregnant women. If you want to prevent miscarriage, you should not consume alcohol. When you consume alcohol during pregnancy, it passes through the placenta to your fetus. Since your fetus’s body remains immature, it breaks down the alcohol at a very slow rate than your body does. This increases the alcohol level in your child’s blood which remains in his/her blood for a long time. This condition can lead to lifelong damage to your child.

Apart from miscarriage, drinking during pregnancy may also result in premature birth and still birth. Therefore, for the mental and physical health of your unborn baby, you should not consume alcohol during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
