Recent studies show that some food items can prevent high blood pressure to a very great extend.  They are tomatoes, beetroot, broccoli, celery, garlic and onion that can work magic.

Tomatoes can prevent blood pressure variation according to these studies. This is due to Lycopene, the bright red carotene pigment present in tomatoes. Tomatoes are also rich in those antioxidants helpful in preventing heart problems. We know that one tomato a day can provide daily dietary calcium. Four tomatoes a day can prevent and reduce high blood pressure, according to these studies.

Broccoli is rich in β-carotene, folates and vitamin B that can strengthen the cardiac muscles and prevent heart attack. Phytochemicals like indole carbinol and sulphoraphane present in broccoli can prevent the onset of cancer and heart diseases. Vitamins and minerals like calcium and potassium that are necessary for the normal functioning of heart muscles are found in abundance in broccoli.

Beet root can maintain normal blood pressure level. The nitrate present in beet root can provide nitric oxide which is essential for healthy blood circulation. About 250mL beet root juice if taken daily can reduce the soaring levels of blood pressure. Cardio – vascular diseases and hypertension can thereby be controlled effectively.

Celery is rich in vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, vitamin C, potassium, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, sodium and essential amino acids. It is the stem and the leaves that are rich in nutrients. The sodium and potassium present in broccoli can prevent bloating.

The amino acids present in celery can reduce high blood pressure. It also relieves tension from cardiac muscles thereby helping in the normal functioning of blood circulatory system.

Garlic is a traditional remedy to treat high blood pressure and triglycerides levels. The medicinal property of garlic comes from magnesium, phosphorus, adenosine, allium, and sulphur compounds present in it.

These compounds can increase blood circulation and reduce blood pressure. 4gm garlic if taken daily can prevent heart diseases and high blood pressure.

The quercetin compound present in onion possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties and helps in preventing heart diseases and even cancer. This compound is found more in shallots and red onion compared to white onion.

The phenolic flavanol and sulphur compounds present in raw onions increases resistance power of the body. These food items if used in our daily cuisine can provide good health as well as immunity.
