With the problems of obesity on the rise, people have increasingly started looking for healthier, more natural ways to shed those excess kilos. It has been scientifically proven that drinking green tea regularly helps in burning excess body calories and slows down the absorption of fats in the body.

This is however not true for most of the starvation and fad diets out there. This is because when you diet, you force the body to starve. This in turn leads to body reducing the metabolism levels and looking for other sources of proteins to draw energy. It then starts drawing the essential nutrients from the muscle mass. Thus when you stick to starvation diets you are actually losing muscle mass rather than reducing the fat deposits in the body.

Green tea on the other hand allows you to lose weight by boosting up the metabolism levels. It contains powerful antioxidants such as catechin polyphenols and EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) in particular that give you a metabolism boost and helps in weight loss. In fact modern research has shown an increase of more than 4% with the regular intake of green tea. The EGCG along with caffeine in green tea aids in a process known as thermogenesis wherein the nervous system is stimulated allowing the fat to be released into the blood stream. This enables the excess fats to be utilized as fuel in the body.

In addition to burning fats, green tea also helps in inhibiting the absorption of fat and regulates the glucose levels in the body. The catechins in green tea prevent a rise in the blood sugar and insulin levels thus resulting in a drop in the fat storage. Moreover green tea also acts as a glucose regulator as it stems the movement of the body glucose into the fat cells,

Green tea alone cannot help you lose significant amount of weight. Regular exercises are vital if you want to lose the excess calories and stay fit. Green tea reduces the rate of carbohydrates that are used by the body by stimulating the fatty acids by the liver. This in turn helps in boosting the endurance levels and allows you to increase the time of your exercise regime.

Remember that the effects of green tea are not instantaneous. Moreover it has to be supplemented with a healthy diet and regular exercise. People with thyroid problems or heart troubles can be affected by the caffeine and fluoride content in the tea
