Hormonal acne is usually caused by the imbalance or change in the hormone levels of your body, especially during puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, menopause etc. The increase in these hormonal activities helps in the increased production of the oil or sebum by the sebaceous glands of the skin.
This oil is good for the skin but if produced in larger quantities it can clog the pores of skin with dirt, dead skin cells, pollutants etc. It also facilitates bacterial action (P.acne bacteria), which increases its spread. Another important factor which is believed to aggravate this condition is the male hormones ‘androgen’
The best way to treat hormonal acne is to deal with it as soon as possible. Stress plays an important role in causing changes in the hormonal levels hence, it is essential to keep a tab on your stress level.
Proper sleep, regular exercise and spending quality time with your self will help in this. Also, cleansing your skin is a good way to maintain the glow and remove the excess oil from your skin thereby unblocking the pores.
Other method that may be used in the hormonal acne treatment is the prescription of oral contraceptives or birth control pills. These pills basically control the hormonal changes in the body thereby decreasing the amount of oil produced by the sebaceous glands and the clogging of pores. Its results are seen only after continuous treatment for a month or two. However, you may still have to stay on treatment to maintain these results.
Androgens are believed to increase levels of testosterone, which in turn increases the secretion of oil by the skin. Hence, in some cases, even antiandrogens may be administered by your dermatologist. This treatment is usually continued for about 2 to 3 months and it does not have many side effects.
Both the oral contraceptives and antiandrogens are given on trial and error basis, as in the case of oral contraceptives there may be certain side effects and in case of antiandrogen it may be difficult to determine the right quantity.
Being overweight too sometimes triggers the condition of acne as when you are overweight your body tends to automatically convert estrogens to androgens further aggravating its cause. Maintaining a proper weight would help in removing harmful toxins from the body and keeping control over hormones.
