Many people have the perception that diets foods are bland and tasteless. But this is far away from the truth. Diets foods only have to be low in fats, high in fiber, and nutrients. The best way to add flavor to diet foods is to use healthy herbs, condiments and spices.
They have an intense flavor and have numerous health benefits also. You can use both fresh and dried herbs to enhance taste of diet foods. Dried herbs have an intense flavor, but they should be stored in airtight containers to preserve the taste. Fresh herbs are milder in taste, you will need them in greater quantities as compared to dried herbs.
Some good herbs, spices and condiments that can be used in diet foods are; parsley, thyme, chives, dill, garlic, basil, etc. You can spice up your food with additions like chilies, ginger, mustard and pepper. You can opt for either English or French mustard.
There are many readymade spicy sauces like hot pepper sauce, mustard sauce, curry powder etc available in the market. If you want to add a sweet flavor to your meal, just use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar. Also, opt for natural spices that add sweet flavor such as vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon.
Vegetables and condiments with a spicy or tangy flavor that you can add to diet foods are onions, spring onions, green onions, red onions, peppers, horseradish, green garlic shoots, etc.
Some peppers have a slightly sweet taste, so learn to pick peppers with spicy flavor. Green peppers are spicy, whereas orange and red peppers taste sweet. Sun dried tomatoes have a tangy flavor and can zing up any diet food.
But, just do not add spices and herbs mindlessly in diet food. You should be aware of all savory combinations of herbs and other ingredients used customarily. Add cumin, dill, rosemary, garlic, mustard, oregano, paprika, parsley and thyme with poultry.
Combine cinnamon, mint, and lime juice with fruits. Fish goes well with celery, cilantro, dill, mint, rosemary, garlic, mustard, parsley and thyme. Eggs taste great with celery, basil, garlic, paprika, and mustard. Cheese in sumptuous with addition of basil, cinnamon, and oregano. Vegetables taste good with basil, dill, oregano, and parsley.
Salads are a part of most diet food plans. Ensure that you are not using dressings high in fat in your salads. Vinegar, especially balsamic vinegar is good option for adding taste to salad dressings.
You can also use flavored vinegars; like tarragon, garlic, herbed, raspberry, garlic, chive, and apple cider vinegar. Also, you can use fresh lime juice in your salad dressing. Other ingredients you can use in salad dressings are; mustard, low fat yogurt, buttermilk etc.
Ensure that both yogurt and buttermilk are low in fat, i.e. made from skimmed milk. Another great addition to your salad dressings is healthy oils rich in unsaturated fats. Extra virgin olive oil and canola oil are great choices for diet salads. Avoid using bacon or sausages in your salad as they are fattening. Instead opt for vegetarian proteins, eggs (especially egg whites), chicken, fish, soy chunks, tofu, etc.
