One of the commonest problems faced by many today is heel pain, where the individual feels the pain just behind the heel or under it. There are several signs and symptoms that help you understand the various types of pain occurring in the heels.
Whilst it is easily treatable and curable, it becomes important to understand the exact cause of the pain before prescribing treatment. Following are some of the common causes of such pain in the heels.
When you have indulged in walking or standing for a long time, your heels experience a pain, which is basically due to irritation or inflammation of the tissue that forms the arch in your foot. This condition is the commonest cause of heel pain in many and is called plantar fasciitis.
Heel Bursitis and Heel Bumps
Another cause for heel pain is inflammation in the back of the heel, in the bursa, which is a sac filled with fluid. Such pain is usually experienced deep inside the heel or at the back of the heel and can be caused due to landing awkwardly on the feet or due to pressure exerted by tight footwear.
Heel bumps, on the other hand, are most common in teenagers, who are yet to develop the heel bone. It is often seen that when teenagers wear heels or allow their heels to rub more frequently causing wear and tear, such bumps are caused.
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
When the large nerve, present at the back of the foot, is pinched or trapped, it results in excessive pain in the heels.
Fractures caused by exercise, sports or heavy manual work, which results in stressing the heel excessively lead to severe pain in the heel.
Severs Disease and Achilles Tendonitis
Severs disease occurs mostly in children between the ages 7 and 15, where due to excessive use and repetitive trauma on the heel region, there is excessive pain. Achilles tendonitis, on the other hand, is caused by gradual degeneration of the Achilles tendon. When there are several minor tears in the tendon, which are impossible to heal, heel pain is caused.
It is important to note that the above are only few of the major causes of heel pain. There are several other causes, which can be attributed to several factors including posture etc that cause such pain.
