Bad breath is a very common problem today, with most people. Bad breath can be very stressful for the person suffering as well as others. The offensive odor deflects people from coming close to you, which can lead to loneliness and depression. The best part is that this is not incurable but in order to cure it is important to understand the causes of bad breath. Following are some of the main factors that lead to bad breath.
Poor Oral Hygiene Routine
One of the main causes of bad breath is poor or no oral hygiene routine. If you do not brush your teeth and keep it clean regularly, then bacteria formation is accelerated. These bacteria give out harmful gases and acids, which lead to bad breath. It is important to rinse your mouth, every time you eat, if it is not possible to brush your teeth. Moreover, people are more prone to bad breath after a good night’s sleep. This is because of the low production of saliva while sleeping, which leads to lesser oxygen content to ward off bad breath. However, this is not as serious as poor or no oral hygiene.
Certain Foods Cause bad breath
Certain foods are also causes of bad breath. For example, eggs, meat, fish, cake, pear, certain nuts, milk etc are known to cause bad breath. Similarly, raw onions when consumed tend to give a strong odor. The only way to prevent this is either by avoiding such foods or having a good oral hygiene routine to overcome it.
Tooth decay and other problems
Tooth conditions like gingivitis, gum retraction, ulcerations and lesions in mouth, dental caries, biofilm production etc are all causes of bad breath. In case of gingivitis, inflammation of the gum gives rise to infection in the area. If this spreads, it could cause serious discharge of pus and release odor. Similarly, lesions in all forms cause bad breath, irrespective of whether they are caused by bacteria or food or virus.
It is important to note that causes of bad breath are too many and the above few are some of the main ones.
