Sciatic Nerve Pain During Pregnancy
Sciatic nerve pain is the condition experienced by several pregnant women. When the baby begins to grow in the mother’s womb, it causes severe pressure on the nerve. Sciatic nerve pain is also known as sciatica. The sciatic nerve passes under the uterus to the legs. It is the longest nerve in the human body. Sciatic nerve pain is usually observed in late pregnancy when your baby grows bigger.
Sciatica causes a lot of discomfort to the sufferer and interferes with the daily activities. Sciatica symptoms can turn your pleasant and exciting pregnancy time into a time of misery and pain. Symptoms of sciatica during your pregnancy can make sitting and lying intolerable and standing becomes even worse.
The common symptoms of sciatica in pregnancy may include lack of sensation in the leg or foot and discomfort or pain in the lower back or back of the pelvis which may expand anywhere to the feet. Sharp, shooting, and needle-like pain can be experienced almost in any part of your legs, lower back area or buttocks.
Weight gain during pregnancy is the most important cause of sciatica occurring in pregnant women. But the usual causes of sciatica are trauma, which is often caused due to an injection into the buttocks. Prolonged external pressure exerted on the nerves and pressure exerted by adjoining body structures are the other causes of sciatica. It can also be caused if pressure is applied on the nerve where it passes through a constricted structure.
The sciatic nerve is usually hurt by gunshot wounds, fractures of the pelvis, or other strain to the thigh or buttocks. Sitting for an extended period or lying in a posture which exerts pressure on the buttocks may also damage the sciatic nerve. Sciatic nerve can also be damaged by systemic diseases like diabetes. Pressure exerted from masses of abscess or a tumor may also cause injury to the sciatic nerve and result in sciatic nerve pain. Bleeding in the pelvis region is another cause for the damage.
Sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy generally occurs during 12th weeks after pregnancy. But some women can experience sciatica pain throughout their pregnancy. Do not confuse sciatica pain during pregnancy with other common pains experienced during pregnancy such as leg cramps and lower back pain. If you notice sciatica symptoms you should report them to your doctor.
