A sleep disorder is basically disorder of sleeping pattern of a person. There are many types of sleep disorders like difficulty in sleeping, difficulty in staying asleep or feeling sleepy all the time etc.

Getting a good night’s sleep is very important for feeling fresh and staying alert.A lack of proper sleep can cause various problems. It affects your mental health, your relationships, disrupts your work.

Some common sleep disorders are:

1. Insomnia: Insomnia is a chronic inability to get a good quality sleep. It is a very common sleep disorder and almost everyone gets affected by insomnia at some point in their lives. Insomnia can be caused by many reasons such as stress, changes in time zone, changes in sleeping schedule etc. Learn to relax and pay attention to your sleeping habits to sleep better. Insomnia is not a permanent problem and can be cured simply by altering your sleeping habits.

2. Sleep Apnea: Sleep apnea can be very serious if not cured. In this type of disorder, your breathing gets very shallow or it can even stop while you are asleep. Breathing can stop for almost 20 seconds. During apnea, the sleeper has to wake up to breathe which disrupts the sleep. Sleep apnea can be corrected by self help techniques such as loosing weight (if you are over weight), using dental appliances, elevating the head of your bed etc.

3. Narcolepsy: It is a neurological disorder which causes extreme sleepiness. Exact causes of narcolepsy are still unknown. People with narcolepsy feel sleepy even after getting enough sleep. They can even fall asleep during activities like walking, swimming or driving which can be very dangerous. Narcolepsy can be genetic. Patients with narcolepsy require medications and counseling.

4. Snoring: Snoring can prove to be very irritating for both you and your partner. It is caused by narrowing of airway, either due to excess weight or poor sleep posture. There are many cures and self help techniques for snoring. Sleep on your side, elevate the head of your bed or try to loose weight if you are overweight.

Pay attention to your sleeping pattern if you have a sleeping disorder. This will help your doctor in finding the cause of the problem. You should highlight details such as timings of your sleep, types of foods consumed, feelings, medications consumed to your doctor.
