Summer Skin Care For Oily Acne Prone Skin
The hot months have a distressing effect on the skin. Since there is no getting away from such weather, the only thing you can do is modify your skin care routine. During the winter months, the cold air chaps the skin, leaving it looking taut and dry.
Thick creams, oil and ointment based lotions keep the skin soft and supple. However, unless you have exceptionally dry skin, you don’t really need to use them during the summer. You should use such skin care products that are well suited to your skin type.
How do you know what skin type you have?
Well, that’s easy. There are five types of skin – dry, sensitive, oily, combination and normal.
These skin types are categorized on the basis of how much oil the sebaceous gland produces. If your face feels stretched and tight after washing, you probably have dry skin. You may also have flaky and reddish skin. Sensitive skin is delicate and highly prone to allergic reactions.
This type of skin easily breaks out into rashes and turns red. Strange though it may sound, there are many people whose skin is sensitive to the light emitted by tube lights and radiation from computer screens. They are often advised to use sun block to keep their skin from swelling or reddening.
Oily skin is easy to identify. You can do a simple test to check your skin type. Press a dry facial tissue to your face and allow it to stay in place for 1 minute. Now remove the tissue gently. If the paper has small oily looking blotches, you have oily skin.
Pimples and blackheads are often a regular occurrence for those who have this skin type. Combination skin is exactly as the name suggests, a combination of dry, oily and normal skin. Normal skin will have a healthy hue and is neither dry nor oily, sensitive or sun-damaged.
How to Care for Oily Skin during the Summer?
Oily acne prone skin can be very difficult to care for, particularly during the summer when the sweat and oil glands are on overdrive. If your skin gets frequently afflicted with acne, then you cannot use the skincare routines recommended for regular oily skin. Here are 6 tips that are guaranteed to help control the shine on your face.
Washing your face
The hot months will make you perspire and feel dirty but you should restrict washing your face to just twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Use a mild gel or water based cleanser. It should contain salicylic acid, which unclogs pores and temporarily removes excess oil. You can wash your face twice in between by merely splashing water. After washing your face, don’t rub your skin with a rough paper napkin or towel. Use soft fabric or facial tissues and pat dry gently.
Moisturize Only If Necessary
If you actually have oily skin, your glands will have your face covered with a thin film of oil within an hour of washing your face. So, applying moisturizing cream or lotion afterwards is unnecessary. During the summer, the air is normally humid. Therefore, your skin is less prone to drying. You can afford to skip this step especially if you stick to using a gel or water based facial cleanser. These cleansers don’t normally rob the skin of moisture while washing.
Alcohol as an Astringent
Summer time means dirt, sweat and all of that clinging to your oily skin. Every time you step out, you’re carrying a little of the neighborhood around with you. Scented astringents are not good for oily skin. Instead, try using alcohol. Dab a little on to a small wad of cotton to gently wipe your face free of oil and dirt. Alcohol has cleansing properties and works as a natural astringent.
Be Liberal with Sunblock
Everyone knows what happens when human skin comes into contact with sunlight. You not only tan but also expose your skin to possible short-term or long-term damage. Oily acne prone skin should not be directly exposed to the sun. It is just as prone to reddening as sensitive skin. Invest in a lotion or gel based sunscreen with a minimum SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30. It should also contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Instead of moisturizing, use sunblock after washing your face.
Skip or Switch Make-Up
Foundations, concealers, blush and glitter are liable to clog up the pores. This combined with the pollution in the air can aggravate acne prone skin. If you can manage it, do without make-up.
If you can’t, do a minimalistic job of it. Since oily skin is prone to acne, you often need a little make-up to cover up the blemishes. In that case, use water-based make-up. Never use make-up that contains mineral oil or dimenthicone. You can use mineral based make-up from reputed companies.
Face Masks, Scrubs and Sprays
Acne prone skin like any other skin type can use a soothing face pack. Face packs not only rejuvenate your skin, but also leave it feeling smoother and suppler. Use a mask made out of Fuller’s earth or a clay mask. Both are excellent ways to get rid of excess oil without aggravating the acne problem. You can also use a fruit mask especially if it contains papaya.
There are plenty of resources on the internet that will give you pages and pages on homemade masks. Find one that works well for you and use it once or twice a week. Facial scrubs are good for oily skin but not for oily acne prone skin so avoid them altogether. Fill a spritzer bottle with lavender water and spray on your face to feel fresh. It might work better than splashing water on it.
Forget the marketing hype surrounding top brands and focus on what you need. Sometimes, the so-called herbal or ayurvedic skin care products are not all they make themselves out to be. You might have to try different products before you hit on the right one.
