Tips For Dental Health
Oral hygiene and good dental health is very important for overall health of a person.Regularly visit your dentist for check ups as a preventive measure. Most of the dental problems come with some degree of pain when they reach an advanced stage. Maintain a good oral health by practicing regular oral hygiene.
Brush your teeth twice a day using toothpaste which contains fluoride. Practice a good brushing technique. Always use a toothbrush which is gentle on your gums. Try to brush for at least 2 minutes every time and don’t forget to clean your tongue. Replace your toothbrush every 2 months as it gets frayed. Brush immediately after eating sticky foods.
Eating sweets is not the primary cause of cavities or other dental problems. In addition to that it is important to neutralize the level of pH in your mouth. The real cause of cavities is a bacterial infection which develops when your mouth becomes very acidic. This cannot be prevented by brushing alone.
There are number of food items which help in fighting growth of harmful bacteria in mouth. Some of them are cheese, onions, mushrooms, wasabi etc. Drinking plenty of water keeps your gums well hydrated and increases the production of saliva. Saliva is very effective in fighting bacteria. Drink a cup of green tea everyday as it has a number of health benefits and it contains catechins which fight number of bacteria.
Make sure you have plenty of xylitol. It is a sugar which cannot be broken down by bacteria into harmful acids. It also helps in protecting tooth enamel. You can have 5 to 11 grams of xylitol everyday in form of fruits, chewing gums, mouthwash and toothpaste.
In addition to brushing and flossing, you can also use products like mouth rinse, oral irrigator, inter dental cleaner etc.
Do not take your smile for granted as a confident smile depends on a proper dental care routine.
Call your dentist immediately if you notice any of the following:
- Red or swollen gums.
- Bleeding gums
- Loose teeth
- If you are feeling sensitive to hot or cold.
- If you notice any pus around your teeth or gums.
You can reduce and even completely eliminate the chances of tooth decay or any gum problems by simply cleaning your mouth completely of the bacterial plaque.
