Vitamin B12 Side Effects
Vitamin B12, popularly known as cyanocobalamin, is a water soluble vitamin. It is indispensable for our good health as it is needed by us for the production of red blood corpuscles i.e. RBC and the maintenance of the central nervous system. It is also required for the creation of DNA. Its deficiency can result in dementia, psychosis, and mood disorders. The recommended daily allowance of Vitamin B12 is 2.4 mcg.
You can obtain Vitamin B12 from foods like meat, dairy products, shellfish, cabbage, faggots, eggs, liver, etc. But it is difficult, especially for the vegans and the vegetarians, to get adequate amounts of this vitamin from the daily diet. In such condition, doctors usually prescribe Vitamin B12 supplements to prevent deficiency of Vitamin B12 and also to treat anemia.
Deficiency of Vitamin B12 can cause several health problems but an overdose of Vitamin B12 is not safe either and may produce many side effects.

Vitamin B12 supplement can be taken orally or through injections. Whatever be the form, if it is taken in excess quantity it may give rise to some common side effects, which may include mild diarrhea, skin rashes, hives, anxiety, insomnia, breathing problems, panic attacks, and heart palpitations.
These symptoms usually go away by it within a few days but in certain cases, can reappear and persist for many months. The side effects due to overdose of Vitamin B12 is more common and distinct in people who have been administered Vitamin B12 injections.
If the daily consumption of Vitamin B12 exceeds 2.4 mcg, it could result in side effects like rashes, rosacea, and itching. Overdose of Vitamin B12 can also cause severe side effects on your cardiovascular, nervous and respiratory systems.
Cardiovascular side effects include pulmonary edema, congestive heart failure, and peripheral vascular thrombosis. In peripheral vascular thrombosis condition, blood clots are formed resulting in pain, inflammation, and redness. Nervous system side effects include asthenia, headache, hypoesthesia, dizziness, nervousness, anxiety, and in-coordination.
Other side effects of Vitamin B12 overdose are back pain, rapid weight gain, unusual warmth, generalized pain and chest pain. If you experience severe side effects like chest pain, shortness of breadth, numbness, etc, you should seek immediate medical help.
