Use the following ingredients as home remedies for cold:
Jaggery and black pepper
Combine together black pepper and jaggery and boil the mixture in water. Sip the mixture like tea when hot. You will get relief from congestion.
Take a glass of water and squeeze juice of 2 lemons into it. Add sugar to sweeten the solution. Take this solution during bedtime to get relief from nasal catarrh.
Lemon juice and honey
Take a glass of hot water and add 1 teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice to it. Take this syrup regularly to soothe throat, cure body pain, fever and to release mucous membrane. This is a tested cold home remedy.
Eucalyptus oil works wonder in treating cold. Massage Eucalyptus oil on forehead, nostrils and chest every night before bed. Cover yourself with a blanket and sleep. You may sweat a lot at night but allow that to happen. Cold will vanish in the morning taking away fever with it, if present.
Inhale steam if you are suffering from cold and chest congestion. Steam looses and liquefies the mucous and cures chest congestion effectively.
Prepare garlic paste and mix it with a glass of milk. Drinking it warm will lessen chest congestion, enhance breathing and act as an antioxidant that prevents cold.
Boil a glass or cup of water and add cinnamon, honey and a dash of pepper to it. Drink the water to cure soar throat. This home remedy also prevents the cold from getting chronic or developing into influenza or pneumonia.

Holy basil (Tulsi)

Diet for cold
Avoid foods such as yoghurt, cheese, milk, sweets and oily foods. These foods are difficult to digest. Chicken soup is very effective in treating cold. Take plenty of hot foods, or steamed vegetables to reduce the symptoms of cold quickly.
