Blinds get dirty and dusty quite often but they are cleaned only once in a blue moon.

Why? This is because many a time people are ignorant about the ways to clean them without any damage and there are times when the work looks too difficult but rather very easy to put off.

Instead of packing off your blinds to a cleaner (it will cost you something) you can clean them at home itself. Go through our instructions (not one, but many) to clean your blinds. Here’s how:

Difficulty Level

Moderately challenging

Instructions

  • Equipments needed – Sponge, a duster (cloth), vacuum cleaner, water, hose and cleaning solution.
  • Brush away the dust– Use a vacuum cleaner with the brush attached and clean any type of blinds for faster results. You can also brush the dust away using a hand duster. For this turn the blinds so that the other side faces in. Clean the dust that you see on the blinds using a duster. Open the blinds half and clean the remaining dust slowly from one end to the other and also between the cords. Then lower the blinds and clean. And finally clean the opposite side the same way.
  • Perfect finish – Once the dust has been removed using the vacuum cleaner or duster you can still continue cleaning for that perfect finish. For this put on your rubber gloves and on top of them put old clean socks. Pour alcohol (or vinegar) in a bowl and put your hand inside the bowl, remove it and then start cleaning those hard spots with your covered hands.
  • Hard dust – Most often you will see hard dust won’t just go away by simple dusting or cleaning. For such cases you will have to deep clean with water.
  • Bathtub method – Remove the blinds and put them in a bathtub filled with warm water and mild dish soap (or degreaser/pine oil/ammonia/baking soda/borax solution). After thirty minutes clean them using a brush and then rinse in cool water. Finally take them out and towel dry or air dry. Do not clean wooden blinds using the bathtub method.
  • Hose method – Take your blinds outside and put them over the clothes line. Using a hose, wash them first and then apply the cleaning agent (soap/ammonia/degreaser). Once done use the hose to clean them again and air dry.

Tips and Warnings

  • You can take the blinds to a self-serve car wash center and clean them using brush and soap.
  • Wooden blinds should be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner or by hand dusting only.
  • Water cleaning methods are good but may take a lot of your time.
