• Paint the walls in white or cream. Warmer colors will make your apartment look much smaller. White ceilings will make the walls of your studio apartment appear taller than they actually are, thus giving the apartment a more spacious and airy feel. Paint the window frames and doors in white.
• Large open windows create a spacious and airy atmosphere. Leave your windows uncovered and open to accentuate that roomy look. Alternatively, you could use white or cream sheer curtains or blinds to blend in with the walls. Use huge wall mirrors or shelving with mirrors to make your apartment appear larger. Put up a few small paintings, which blend in with the wall, for decorative appeal.
• For the flooring, use light colored wooden flooring or tiles. If replacing the flooring is not an option, you can simply lay down light colored wall-to-wall carpeting. When it comes to selecting furniture for your studio apartment, it is important to keep two things in mind- storage space and size.
• While decorating a studio apartment with furniture, it is necessary to make use of the small space available. Try to select small and compact furniture so that your apartment does not have a cramped look. Maximize storage space by selecting a platform or low bed with pull out drawers and a bookcase headboard. Choose a bedside table that is small with slim legs. You can also use low hanging shelves in lieu of a bedside table, for extra storage space and floor space.
• Alternatively, you could go for a loft bed that is accessible by a ladder, and use the space beneath for a storage closet or a work/study place. Studio apartments often have built-in or recessed closets. A walk-in closet is very useful to store away all the items you need. Make use of glass or light colored wooden hanging shelves to add extra storage space. Floor-to-ceiling bookcases and shelves would also be a good idea.
• Place a small couch in a corner at angle so that it is out of the way. A tiny coffee table would also be useful. Large furniture will make your apartment look cluttered. A small dining table with two chairs or a foldable leaf table with foldable chairs, would make a nice addition to your apartment. Choose light colored furniture that blends in with the walls to accentuate a spacious and comfortable look.
• While it is important to maintain a light and roomy look for your apartment, it does not mean that you cannot use darker and richer shades of color to add a personal touch to the apartment. Use silk cushions with small, simple prints in colors like red, blue or pale orange, to give your apartment a dash of vibrant color.
• White, yellow or cream runners, tablecloths and napkins with warm colored accents will make your apartment look extra cozy while still maintaining an uncluttered look. Use light colored vases filled with colorful flowers like red roses to add to the attractive appeal of the room. Leave the kitchen space uncluttered. Paint the cabinets white so that they blend in with the rest of the décor. When decorating a bathroom in a studio apartment, it is best to go with plain white or cream tiles, fixtures and fittings.
