It could always be irritating and discomforting dealing with leaky faucets in the kitchen, the bathtub or shower. You would not only lose precious water, but would have to bear with the inconvenience of the water dripping on the floor and making it wet and dirty.

You need to fix the faucet right away. If this does not work, you will have to replace the faucet. So, here are some simple steps to fix a leaking faucet.

Difficulty Level

Moderately easy

Instructions

  • Things that you need: A pair of pliers,A screwdriver set,A rag or dry cloth,An adjustable wrench,Washers,Sealant,Grease and Cartridges.
  • Cutting off the water supply by closing the knob in the pipe or main water supply is necessary. It is advisable first to look out for the knob of pipe that carries water. If it is not possible to, cut off the main water supply. This will ensure that there is no water wastage.
  • It is necessary to ensure that all the water in drained from the faucet by opening it. This lack of water would also ensure that the bathroom is comparatively dry and clean to work in.
  • Remove the handle of the faucet that could either be superficial or concealed. Observe carefully and locate the screw in the handle. Then, by using an adjustable wrench, slowly unscrew the handle of the faucet. Using some duct tape on the wrench tip could protect the handle of the faucet from developing scratch marks. Now closely inspect the handle for grime or dirt that could accumulate in it. If you find dirt and accumulated grime, use a dry cloth or rag to clean and dry it well.
  • You could know the reason for the leakage by closely inspecting the inside of the faucet. The possible reasons could be rubber washers that are worn out, or worn out O rings, valves that are loose, a threading that is worn out or due to the internal components having undergone a large scale wear and tear. In case the valve is loose, tighten it with a pair of pliers. Attach the faucet handle and screw it back again and then test for leakage.
  • If the leakage still exists, observe if the leakage is due to a worn out washer. Replace the washer that is worn out or old with a new one of similar size and thickness. If you observe that there is a loosened or worn out threading, remove and replace it immediately with new regular plumbing threads, making sure to wind it tightly to prevent tangling with other parts. If you find that the leakage is due to a worn out O ring, replace it immediately. For excellent results, apply a bit of sealant and grease on the threads of the valve and faucet while screwing it back on.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not use the tap till the sealant is dry; otherwise, the faucet could start leaking again. It is best to wait for at least 2 hours.
  • In case you are unable to stop the leak, take the help of a professional plumber.
