Common cold is caused due to viral infection (rhinoviruses and Coronaviruses being the most prominent). The most common symptoms of common cold include nasal congestion, sneezing, sore throat, headache, etc.
Though the common cold does not last for more than 1-2 weeks, you can get rid of it quickly by following certain guidelines.

- Common cold is a viral infection. However, no antibiotics can treat common cold. Moreover cold is a symptom that the body is healing from an unfavorable crisis. If you interfere with the process of healing by consuming medicines or concoctions made of herbal products, it would burden your body. It is beneficial if the problem is treated from its root rather than temporary relief.
- Take rest: In case you catch cold, take adequate amount of time to rest and let your body relax. Get ample of sleep. Body will heal well and quickly if it can channelize its energy towards one common issue. If the cold is accompanied by cough, prop your head on 2-3 pillows. It will make breathing easier.
- Eat a good Diet: Eating a good diet provides the necessary nutrients to boost the metabolism rate and build immunity of the body against diseases. Consume fruits and vegetables. Fruits like orange, etc. which have a high Vitamin C content help in quick recovery from cold. Also eat food which can be digested easily. Avoid meals with high-protein or starch. Eat only if you feel the urge to eat. Do not stuff yourself with food.
- Drink fresh juice and hot soups especially chicken soup. Drinking plenty of water will ensure that the body remains hydrated. It will also help to clear the congestion so that you can breathe easily. And will flush away the mucus.
- Gargle : Try gargles with hot water and salt. It will clear out congestion and relieve your sore throat. Sucking zinc lozenges helps in clearing cough.
- Supplements: Boost your immune system by opting for Vitamin C supplements which are easily available at medical stores.
- Medication : When above guidelines are unable to cure cold, take medication to ease out sinus pains and congested throat. Antihistamines help in clearing congestion. Take hot steam. It will clear away the mucus congested in nose and chest.
