Vegetable Pizza recipeA favorite among all ages, pizzas are the ultimate snack cum meal. The only problem with a pizza is that it’s a calorie trap. First of all, it is largely made out of white flour. The toppings used are processed foods like sausage, ham and salami, all of which contain monosodium glutamate (MSG).

That’s why vegetable pizzas are becoming increasingly popular. When combined with crunchy vegetables, a pizza becomes both nutritious and filling. Here are the steps to make a vegetable pizza.

Difficulty Level

Easy

Instructions

  • This vegetable pizza takes around 15 minutes to prepare and around 10 minutes to bake. Preheat the oven to 250 C. Pizzas turn out well when baked in a hot oven.
  • There are normally three steps that go into making a pizza. First, knead the pizza dough, second, prepare the pizza sauce and third, put everything together to make the pizza. I normally use ready-made, partially cooked pizza base because it’s quicker.
  • For the pizza sauce, you will need 3 ripe tomatoes chopped into small pieces, 2 teaspoons of oregano, 1-½ teaspoons of black pepper powder, 1 teaspoon of finely chopped garlic, 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil and salt to taste.
  • Now we come to the pizza ingredients. You can add broccoli florets, red, yellow and green bell peppers, baby corn and finely diced onions. You will also need 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil and ½ cup of grated mozzarella cheese. Wash the broccoli florets in water, mixed with a teaspoon of salt. Drain and set aside. Wash and drain the bell peppers.
  • To make the pizza sauce, begin by heating the olive oil in a wok and tip in the garlic. Stir fry till fragrant. Add the tomatoes, oregano, pepper and salt and mix well. Cover the wok with a lid and cook till the tomatoes are tender. Mash the tomatoes from time to time so that the sauce texture is less lumpy. Once the tomatoes are cooked and have absorbed the flavor of the spices, turn off the flame and set aside. For the pizza, smear a little olive oil on to the pizza base. Lightly grease a pizza pan and place the pizza base on it.
  • Next, evenly spread some of the pizza sauce all over the top, leaving a small margin along the edges. Generously spread the vegetables on top of the sauce. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper on to the vegetables. Drizzle with the grated cheese. Place the pizza pan in the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the cheese begins to melt and bubble. Once done, remove it from the oven and serve hot with ketchup and dried red chilli flakes, if you like the spice.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are using uncooked pizza dough, increase the baking time by another 15 minutes.
  • You can use different vegetables for this recipe so long as they are crunchy. Soggy vegetables rob the pizza of its flavor and often taste unappetizing. This is your chance to get your kids to eat their daily portion of veggies. Just remember to choose the kind that goes well with cheese.
