Instructions

  • We will be making a fresh fruit crumble as a healthy low-calorie dessert. This dessert incorporates the goodness of fresh fruits and uses whole-grains such as oats which makes it rich in vitamins, fiber and anti-oxidants.
  • To make this low-calorie dessert we will need the following ingredients: 1/4th cup chopped toasted walnuts, 2 cups fresh peaches sliced, pitted and peeled, 1/4th cup fresh strawberries, 1/4th cup canned pineapple, ½ cup brown sugar, 1/4th cup refined flour, 1 cup cooking oats, 1 spoon low-fat butter or margarine, and 2 spoons vegetable oil such as canola oil.
  • Begin making this fruit crumble by gently toasting the walnuts in the oven. You can also use other nuts of your choice such as pecans or hazelnuts. Once the nuts are toasted, allow them to cool and then gently crush them in your food processor. The nuts must be crushed to a coarse mix and must not become a fine powder.
  • Take the peaches, strawberries and canned pineapple pieces and toss them with half the brown sugar. You can also add a dash of lime juice if you like citrusy flavor. The brown sugar must coat the fruits well.
  • Next, prepare the crumble for this dessert. For this, take flour, oats and brown sugar in a mixing bowl. Add the low-fat butter and the vegetable oil. Mix the dry ingredients with the butter and oil so that the mixture acquires the texture of bread crumbs. Next, add the chopped walnuts and mix everything well together. You can also add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg powder to the crumble mix to add a unique flavor.
  • To assemble the fresh fruit crumble place the sliced fruits in a baking tray. Top the fruits with the prepared crumble. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 325 degree Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. The crumble must acquire a nice brownish color indicating that your dessert is ready. Serve this healthy fruit dessert warm.
  • This dessert tastes delicious just as is. However, if you want to make it taste more exotic you can add a dollop of low-fat vanilla flavored yoghurt as topping. Low-fat vanilla or strawberry ice-cream also serves as a great topping on this fresh fruit crumble.
