Instructions

  • For making hash browns you require, three to four medium sized potatoes, chopped onions, cooking oil, salt and pepper. Herbs, garlic and peppers can be used to add flavor to the dish. In addition to this you will need a skillet, a cheese grater and paper towels. It is a good idea to use Russet or Red Pontiac potatoes for making hash browns.
  • Peel and gate the potatoes using the cheese shredder. Spread out the shredded potatoes onto a flat surface and using paper towels, press the potatoes to remove as much moisture from them as possible. You can also use a potato ricer for this. Removing the moisture from the potatoes is essential as it prevents the hash browns from becoming mushy.
  • In a large skillet, pour in the oil so that it just covers the bottom of the skillet. Too much oil can make the hash browns greasy. Heat the oil on medium heat. Now add the onions and cook them till they are slightly brown. Carefully add in the layer of shredded potatoes to the bottom of the pan. Add salt, pepper and herbs on top and then reduce the heat.
  • Using a spatula, press down the potatoes in the frying pan so that it forms a single layer. Fry the potatoes till the bottom part of the hash browns turn a golden brown. Then flip and cook the other side. It should ideally take around four to five minutes to cook each side on low heat. Once both the sides turn a nice golden brown, then remove from the pan and serve with eggs and bacon.
