Living With Anemia

Anemia

Anemia is a very common blood disorder. In fact, it is the most common blood disorder in the world and millions of people suffer from it on a daily basis. Anemia occurs when there is an insufficient amount of healthy red blood cells. The red blood cells contain an iron rich substance called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is responsible for transporting oxygen to the body’s organs and tissues. If there isn’t enough red blood cells, then there isn’t enough hemoglobin to transport the oxygen. Therefore, the body’s organs and tissues will not get enough oxygen to function properly. This is when anemic symptoms start to form.

dizziness and headache

There are many different anemic symptoms. They vary depending on the cause and the severity. The most common anemic symptom is fatigue. Along with weakness and decreased energy, fatigue is usually the first sign to show up. It is caused by the lack of oxygen and blood. When the organs do not get enough, they will be overworking to function correctly. This will cause the body to become fatigued and begin to shut down. Other common anemic symptoms are dizziness and headache. These occur due to the lack of oxygen and blood to the brain. Shortness or breath and palpitations can also occur with all types of anemia.

Joint Pain

There are anemic symptoms that are specific to the type of anemia. If you have sickle cell anemia, you will notice pain in your joints, bones, abdomen and chest. This is caused by the irregular shape of the cells. The cells will not be able to flow freely through the blood vessel and will cause a back-up of cells. The cells will continue to deconstruct in the vessel and cause the pain. Another anemic symptom that goes right along with this is liver pain or problems. The liver is responsible for getting rid of harmful substances in the blood. The deconstruction red blood cells will increase in numbers and the liver will have to work overtime to get rid of them all. It can cause many problems. Swollen hands and feet also can become an anemic symptom when the blockage occurs. The blood cannot flow freely, which causes the swelling.

Irregular Heart Rate

Other anemic symptoms that can occur are pale skin, irregular heartbeat and chest pain. Knowing the different symptoms can help you diagnose the problem quickly and then you will be able to get treatment. If you notice any symptoms, speak with your doctor.
