Dark patches that appear on skin especially on cheeks, forehead and temples during old age are known as melasma. This skin ailment is more common in women than in men as hormonal disturbances occur more in the case of women.
Several creams are available for the treatment of melasma, but we would recommend the use of homemade therapies to cure melasma as these are safe on the skin. Natural cures for melasma do not cause side effects and help to get rid of spots and marks permanently.
Apple cider vinegar can be used on the skin as it is not as harsh as synthetic vinegars. The ascetic acid present in apple cider vinegar cleanses skin surface by removing dead skin cells and gives a glowing complexion.
It also lends softness to the skin. Dilute vinegar by adding equal proportion of water before applying on face.
Use fresh lemon juice for washing facial skin. Citrus acid in lemon juice peels off the top layer of skin affected by melasma. Moreover, lemon juice also reduces skin pigmentation, thus removing spots.
The juice of onion has the ability to get rid of brown marks caused by melasma. Chop onions in very small pieces and wrap them in a cheesecloth for the juice to properly ooze out.
Apply the juice on the affected areas using a cotton ball. It may cause a burning sensation, but allow the juice to remain on face for 15 minutes before washing off with lukewarm. You can also mix apple cider vinegar in onion for better results against mealsma.
Aloe vera gel has anti pigmentation properties. The component called mucilaginous polysaccharide present in aloe vera gel lightens all marks on the skin. Extract this gel and refrigerate before massaging on skin.
The cool gel will reduce inflammation in the affected areas. Mix essential oils like primrose oil or vitamin E oil in aloe vera gel and apply this paste on the face to alleviate marks caused by melasma faster. The oils will also moisturize the skin.
Make your anti melasma facial pack at home. Mix a cup of powder oatmeal in a bowl of milk. Gently rub the paste on the face to exfoliate the top skin layer that becomes discolored as a result of melasma. Leave the pack on the face for 30 minutes for skin lightening effects. Wash off with lukewarm water.
Keep 2 to 3 almonds immersed in water overnight. Make a paste next morning and add honey to make a thick consistency. Both honey and almonds are rich in protein that lightens the skin tone.
Apply this paste on the face and neck while rubbing gently in circular motions. Allow it to rest on skin for at least 20 minutes before washing off with lukewarm water. Repeat the process everyday for three weeks and see your melasma spots vanishing!
Curcumin present in turmeric is an antioxidant that helps in spot removal. Blend raw turmeric and add milk so as to make a paste. Apply this paste on the face while massaging gently. Antiseptic properties of turmeric also kill bacteria settled on skin surface.
