Natural Remedies Preventing From Flu

The flu is another one of those diseases, like the common cold, for which there is no cure.  Prevention is the best strategy and there are some herbal methods to inhibit the flu virus.

Oregano has been used by traditional Chinese doctors for centuries.  The volatile oil of oregano contains two expectorants that help loosen phlegm and make it easier to cough up.  Make an infusion using 1 to 2 teaspoons of the dried herb in a cup of boiling water.  Steep for ten minutes and drink no more than 3 cups a day.

Boost your immune system with Echinacea.  This daisy-like plant is a native American healing herb that is very popular in Europe and is being studied by researchers in Germany.  Echinacea is a natural flu fighter and revs up the immune system by boosting the white cells in the blood that destroy viruses.  You can purchase a tincture of Echinacea and take one teaspoon as much as three times a day.  Children under two should not be given Echinacea and older children and the elderly should start with lower dosages.  Drinking Echinacea tea is another way to get the benefits of this flu fighter.

Eucalyptus is an Australian tree whose leaves are used in many commercial products like rubs for chest congestion and mouthwash.  You can use the essential oil of eucalyptus to make an infusion to treat the flu.  Use only one to two drops of essential oil in one cup of boiling water.  You can drink up to two cups a day.  You can also add a few drops of oil to a steaming pot of water and inhale the refreshing steam.

Ginger has been studied in China and India where it has been shown to kill flu virus and boost the immune system’s infection fighting capabilities.  Make ginger tea by adding 2 teaspoons of grated ginger root to a cup of boiling water and steep for 10 minutes.

Using herbs to speed up the immune system may help you to prevent the flu.  Other additional strategies are to avoid crowds and wash your hands carefully and often to prevent picking up the virus.
