Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation in one or more joints. There are over 100 types of arthritis, but there are 5 types that are more common than most. They are osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Gout , and Infectious Arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is nicknamed wear and tear arthritis. The main cause of osteoarthritis is age and long term use of the joints resulting in wearing away of the cartilage. Osteoarthritis generally affects mostly the hips, back, knees, and fingers. Medications to manage pain are prescribed for this disease, as well as observing a healthy diet and exercise regimen.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease. More women than men have this type of arthritis. For people with Rheumatoid Arthritis, the body attacks the synovial membranes, which are found surrounding the joints. This results in cartilage and joints becoming damaged and results in scar tissue forming in the joints. This scarring causes joint swelling, stiffness, and pain. The person can also experience weight loss, fatigue, and even anemia. Medication and following a healthy diet and lifestyle help to manage this type of arthritis.
Psoriatic Arthritis is a type of arthritis that often affects people who have psoriasis. It is an inflammatory form of arthritis but the cause remains unknown. This form of the disease is often very mild, with only one or two joints being affected. The spine is most often the location of Psoriatic Arthritis. Anti-inflammatory drugs, along with following a healthy eating and exercise regimen are prescribed to deal with this type of arthritis.
Gout is a very acute type of arthritis that usually affects the big toe. Uric acid crystals collect in the joints that cause swelling and a very sharp stabbing pain. There are many factors that contribute to this type of arthritis. Excessive alcohol consumption, stress, poor diet, hypertension, kidney disease and obesity are just some of the causes. Men are most often affected by gout, but women can be as well. Corticosteriods are often prescribedto alleviate symptoms along with drinking lots of fluids and eating a healthy diet.
Infectious Arthritis is a type of arthritis caused by a bacterial, fungal or viral infection that invades a joint. The infection may start in another location and then affect the joint. Redness, swelling, and pain are all evidence of Infectious Arthritis. The person will often experience fever, chills, and body aches along with the pain and swelling. Antibiotics are prescribed to treat this type of arthritis.
