Dandruff or Sebhorreic dermatitis is a grossly underestimated scalp condition affecting a large percentage of the country’s population. It is characterized by a crusty, flaky scalp, itching and dry skin. The flakes often fall off and can be easily seen on the person’s eye brows, shoulders or clothes. This is typically seen in dry dandruff. Oily dandruff is more persevering and difficult to detect.
In this, the dandruff forms a thick white crust over the person’s scalp due to excessive oil production from the sebum glands. In the initial stages, dandruff is rarely uncomfortable and often over-looked. Prolonged dandruff can however lead to severe scalp infection, hair fall and contact dermatitis when the dandruff comes into contact with a person’s skin. Dandruff does not require extensive treatment.
It is highly preventable with these simple home remedies which are a vast improvement over the OTC shampoos that are full of chemicals. The main thing to remember is that the efficacy of a home remedy is largely dependent on how long you continue to use it. These home remedies for curing dandruff have given people tremendous respite from dandruff.
Fenugreek Seeds For Dandruff
Methi seeds or fenugreek seeds have a potent anti-dandruff formula that can effectively banish dandruff if used over a period of time. For this, soak some seeds overnight in a glass of water. Grind them in the morning in a blender to form a smooth paste. Rub this paste on your scalp just before you wash your hair. Leave it on for half an hour and rinse out your hair with a mild shampoo. You can combine it with reetha or amla for shiny, lustrous hair. Methi water can also be used as a hair tonic after a wash for supple, glowing hair. Repeat the treatment over several weeks for long-lasting results.
The Lemon Solution
The acidic properties of lemon help to combat oily dandruff that is stuck to the scalp. Just cut a lemon into half and rub the slice of lemon all over your scalp. You can also squeeze out the juice and put it on your scalp with the help of cotton. You will have to repeat this treatment over several washes to see effective results. Make sure you use lemon juice at least 2-3 times a week.
The juice of a beet along with its tips and roots are effective in treating dandruff. Cut the beetroot and boil it in water. Use this water to massage your scalp and get rid of dandruff.
Curd is an effective remedy for dry, itchy and scaly scalps. It has a cooling and soothing effect and tackles dandruff effectively. Rub some curd in your scalp. You can put a spoonful of lemon juice in the curd for best results. Alternately, green gram flour mixed with curd is yet another effective remedy.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar dissolved with water can be used as a last rinse just before you finish taking your shower. Just apply some on your scalp and wash off with water.
For great skin and healthy hair it is necessary to detoxify and remove all harmful toxins from the body. Eat a rich and varied diet of fruits, vegetables and nuts that will counter an itchy and dry scalp and also the incidence of dandruff. Avoid starchy, refined and processed foods which exacerbate scalp conditions like dandruff. Use a wide-toothed brush to comb and brush out your hair. Wash your hair frequently to prevent the build up of dirt and grime which leads to oily dandruff. If the condition is very severe do consult a qualified trichologist.
