Types of Acne Products

Acne is a very common problem. In fact, it is the most common skin disorder and millions of people suffer from it. Teenagers are most likely to get it, but it also affects adults, children and even infants. Since it is so common, there are many different acne products available that can help you treat the problem.

The acne products available can contain many different acne medications. Some will contain one while others will have two or three. Each medicine targets a different level of acne. Also, some medicine is prone to sensitivity, so it is not beneficial to those with sensitive skin. Knowing which medicine to look for in an acne product will give you the knowledge to find the best treatment for your symptoms.

Mild acne products are available over-the-counter and usually contain one or two acne medicines. Products that contain benzoyl peroxide are the most commonly used to treat and prevent mild acne. The benzoyl peroxide kills the acne-causing bacteria, unclogs pores and reduces inflammation. There are many different forms of this acne product including cleansers, lotions, creams, gels and cleansing pads. Some brands to look for are Clean and Clear, Neutrogena , Stridex, Clearsil and Oxy. There are many other brands, but these are the most common. Some of these brands may also have acne products that contain salicylic acid. This is another form of medicine used in mild acne products. The salicylic acid exfoliates the skin and sheds the dead skin cells. It also helps dry out the sebum that causes acne. Salicylic acid is somewhat harsh and could come with some side effects. Dryness, itchiness and burning are common side effects associated with salicylic acid. If you have sensitive skin avoid acne products that contain this medicine. You will also want to avoid acne products that contain sulfur. The sulfur is very similar to salicylic acid and works the same way. Unfortunately, it also comes with the same side effects.

There are many acne products that contain alcohol and acetone. You are most likely to notice products listing both of these medicines in the ingredients. That’s because alcohol and acetone work hand-in-hand to help reduce and prevent acne. The alcohol kills any bacteria that can cause acne and the acetone reduces the sebum production. Again if you have sensitive skin, avoid this form of acne product. If you don’t, you may experience dryness, burning and even a possible rash.

There are other acne products that contain retinoids, but these are available by prescription only and should be discussed with your physician. Knowing what medicine to look for in acne products is the first step in getting rid of your acne for good. Choose the medicine that best suits your needs and look for acne products that list the medicine as a main ingredient. Soon, you will get the results you’ve been longing for.
