What Causes a Person to Become Anorexic

One of the most common eating disorders I known as anorexia nervosa. It occurs when a person limits the amount of food that they intake to the point of starvation. A person that suffers from the disorder may also over exercise and abuse diet pills. It is a serious condition that effects both the body and mind.

There are a few different causes of anorexia nervosa. One of the most common causes of anorexia nervosa is peer pressure. Although people of any age or gender can suffer from the disorder, a large amount of the victims are teenage girls. The pressure to be thin and beautiful is very high among teenage girls. This can become a cause of anorexia nervosa. Another common cause of anorexia nervosa is low self-esteem. This goes right along with peer pressure, but can be experienced by anyone of any age or gender. People that suffer from anorexia nervosa are never completely satisfied with the way they look. They will view their self image differently then others see them and will always feel that there is a need for improvement. People that suffer feel that they are heavy no matter how thin they get. This is a dangerous problem. Other common causes of anorexia nervosa include family history, depression and anxiety.

Most of the causes of anorexia nervosa are psychological. This is due to the fact that the disorder stems from the mental state. A person that suffers from the disorder does not decide to stop eating because they are experiencing physical pain, they decide to because they are experiencing mental and emotional pain. Getting psychological help is the most important treatment for anorexia nervosa. Counseling is the most common treatment option. There are different types of counseling, which one is used depends on the individuals needs. One-on-one counseling with a psychologist is an excellent form of treatment. It allows the psychologist to get right down to the cause of the disorder and help treat it. Group counseling is another good choice. In group counseling, there are many people that suffer from anorexia nervosa. Hearing how others are feeling and coping with the problem could be beneficial. Combining counseling and visits to a nutritionist can help treat the disorder completely.
