What is Constipation?
Constipation refers to bowel movements that are infrequent or hard to pass. It is a common cause of painful defecation. Constipation, if severe, is known as obstipation where the individual is not able to pass stool or gas. In case of bowel obstruction, it is known as fecal impaction. Generally, constipation is result of either obstructed defecation or colonic slow transit.
Nearly 50% of patients with constipation suffer from obstructed defecation. Obstructed defecation is due to mechanical and functional causes. On the other hand, colonic slow transit can be due to hormones, diet, heavy metal toxicity, side effects of medications, etc. In children, constipation usually occurs after starting formula or processed foods. Their stomach, at that stage, is not acquainted to digest processed foods, and therefore takes time to pass it through. This, however, subsides after a while when kid starts eating processed foods on a regular basis. Some kids can even experience constipation during their toilet training or soon after starting their school.

However, there are no clear-cut guidelines to diagnose constipation, as every person has a different digestive system. But, usually, people who have bowel movements thrice or less than that per week are said to be constipated. Also, in this case, they face difficulty during defecation and always have a sensation of incomplete bowel evacuation.

Causes of Constipation

Largely, causes of constipation can be divided into three categories primary, secondary, and congenital. The most common cause is primary and it is not life threatening. In this case, symptoms can be present for greater than six months with no medical explanation and no known organic cause. On the other hand, secondary constipation can be due to insufficient intake of fiber and fluid, decreased physical activity, hormonal imbalance, side effects of medications, obstruction by colorectal cancer, etc. Below are some of the causes of constipation.

Constipation can be caused due to insufficient intake of fiber in diet, low intake of liquid, or dieting. It is one of the major causes of constipation.

Certain medications show constipation as a side effects. Some of these categories are diuretics, antispasmodics, opiods, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, antacids, etc.

Metabolic & Muscular

Metabolic and endocrine problems may also lead to constipation. Some of these problems are hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis, hypercalcemia, diabetes mellitus, and celiac disease. Symptoms of constipation are also very common in people with muscular and myotonic dystrophy.

Structural, Functional Abnormalities

Conditions like spinal cord lesions, colon cancer, Parkinson's, anal fissures, pelvic floor dysfunction, and proctitis can also cause constipation.

Neurological conditions like anismus, descending perineum syndrome, and Hirschsprung's disease can also lead to chronic constipation or obstructed defecation.

Some of the psychological causes of constipation can be voluntary withholding, fear of public restrooms, out-of-home settings, fear of pain, etc.

Symptoms of Constipation

Some common symptoms of constipation are as under :

Infrequency and Irregularity in Elimination of Fecal Matter

It is one of the most common symptoms of constipation. People with constipation have to face hard time eliminating fecal matter. In addition to this, their bowel movements tend to be very infrequent and irregular

Foul Breath, Headache, Coated Tongue, Insomnia, etc.

Again, these are classic symptoms of constipation. Because of accumulation of fecal material in stomach, one tends to have foul breath and coated tongue along with infrequent headaches. These symptoms make the individual uncomfortable, leading to insomnia, restlessness, dark circles, nausea, mouth ulcers, etc. Conditions like varicose veins, pain in lumbar region, fullness in abdomen, acidity, heartburn, etc. can also denote constipation.

Abdominal Discomfort

In addition to changes in bowel movements, a person suffering from constipation can exhibit symptoms like constant bloating, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, etc.

Home Remedies for Constipation

Bael Fruit

Bael is regarded as one of the best fruits for constipation. Its laxative properties make it an agent anti-constipation agent. Generally, nearly all fruits, except jack fruit and banana, are considered to be beneficial in constipation. All the fruits are rich in fiber and clean and tone the intestines, especially bale. Regular intake of bael fruit for 2 - 3 months can treat even most chronic constipation. Prefer taking bael in original form before dinner. Around 50 - 60 grams per serving is considered sufficient for an adult.

Pears can be very beneficial in treatment of constipation. Patients suffering from chronic constipation should adopt an exclusive diet of this fruit or it's juice for a few days. Alternatively, a medium-sized pear taken after dinner or with breakfast can help a great deal to relieve constipation.

It is another great remedy to treat constipation. Guava is rich in fiber and provides roughage to the diet. It helps in normal evacuation of the bowels. Generally, one to two guavas taken per day can help with constipation.

Grapes can overcome constipation pretty effectively. The combination of the properties of the cellulose, sugar, and organic acid in grapes make them a great laxative. Grapes also tone up the stomach and intestines and relieve the most chronic constipation. One can consume up to 350 gm of grapes daily to achieve desired results. Alternatively, in absence of grapes, raisins can be soaked for twenty-four to forty-eight hours and eaten early in the morning, along with the water in which they have been soaked.

Oranges are also beneficial in treatment of constipation. One to two oranges at bedtime and again in morning can help stimulate the bowels. The general stimulating influence of orange juice excites peristaltic activity and helps prevent the accumulation of food residue in the colon.

Papaya and Figs

Other fruits specific for constipation are papaya and figs. Half a medium-sized papaya should be eaten as breakfast. Fresh and dry figs also have a laxative effect. Have four to five dry overnight-soaked figs in the morning.

Spinach is considered a great food for the entire digestive tract. Raw spinach contains finest organic material for cleansing, reconstruction, and regeneration of the intestinal tract. About 100 ml of raw spinach juice mixed with an equal amount of water can cure the most aggravated cases of constipation within a few days.

Squeeze half a lime in a glass of hot water and add half a teaspoon of salt into it. It is an effective remedy for constipation.

Water kept overnight in a copper vessel when had first thing in the morning gives great results. When taken regularly, it can treat constipation.

Linseed (alse)

It is extremely useful in difficult cases of constipation. Swallow a teaspoon of linseed with water before each meal. It provides both roughage and lubrication.

Hot Water

Drinking a glass of hot water is also known to stimulate bowel movements but this may not suffice in severe cases of constipation.

Microscopic "good bacteria" can do wonders for the digestive system. These can relieve constipation. Have a probiotic supplement containing at least 4 billion active organisms once daily to relieve constipation.

Dandelion Root

Bile acids help to soften the stool and move it more quickly through the colon. Dandelion root stimulates the production of bile and can help relieve constipation in a natural way. Just boil 2 tablespoons of fresh dandelion root to have it as tea. Alternatively, you can have its extract (250-500 mg) with meal.

Apples contain insoluble and soluble fiber. The first helps with bowel movements and the second forms a gel in the intestines, protecting the walls from bad cholesterol, (LDL), sticking to it as the waste moves through.

Berries have insoluble fiber which draws water to the bowels, not only making it softer, but heavier which allows it to move more quickly through the system. Berries also help prevent bowel acids from turning rancid leading to a cancerous form.

Brown Rice

These are great for constipation. Rich in fiber, brown rice draw large amounts of water, making the stool heavier and softer, allowing it to move quickly through the body.

While one or two cups can stimulate the intestines, more than that can have the opposite effect.

Sugar in honey can stimulate bacteria in the intestines causing it to draw water which will aid in relieving the constipation. Have honey mixed with foods, salads, fruits or in warm milk.

A handful can give you 3-4 grams of fiber. Raisins also have a special acid that acts as a natural laxative.

Prunes and prune juice can help against constipation. Prunes contain a lot of fibers and other natural chemicals that have a laxative effect. Eat them raw or dried

Dates are rich in fiber and are very suitable as a constipation treatment. Eat them with a glass of milk and it will relieve you from constipation.

Fruit Salads

A fiber-rich fruit salad eaten on a regular basis can keep constipation at bay. You can use papaya, guava, apple and some other fruits to make it highly effective.

Diet to Relieve Constipation

Natural, Simple Diet Consisting of Unrefined Foods :

The most important factor in curing constipation is a natural, simple diet containing unrefined foods like wholegrain cereals, bran, honey, lentils, green and leafy vegetables, fresh and dry fruits, and milk products in the form of butter, clarified butter, and cream.

Avoid Certain Foods

Limit your intake of low-fiber and high-fat foods like red meats, cheese, and other processed or refined foods. Also, steer clear of unhealthy artificial drinks and juices or alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. Avoid hurried, irregular meals.

  • Products made of white flour
  • Rice
  • bread
  • Pulses
  • Cakes
  • Pastries
  • Biscuits
  • Cheese
  • Fleshy foods
  • Preserves
  • White sugar
  • Hard-boiled eggs

  • Pineapple
  • Mango
  • Coconut
  • Almonds
  • Persimmons
  • Dried apricots
  • Rhubarb
  • Avocados
  • Chicory
  • Dandelion
  • Watercress
  • Endive
  • Olive
  • Parsley
  • Soybeans
  • Turnips

Preventive Measures for Constipation

Chew Food Properly

Chew your food properly and avoid hurried meals.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Keep yourself well hydrated with a good intake of water and fresh fruit juices. Make sure you drink enough fluids. Water keeps the intestines lubricated, helping waste to pass through easily. Adults should consume between 8 and 10 glasses of water or non-caffeinated beverages per day. Avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeine can increase dehydration, and should be avoided.

Include Fiber in Your Diet

Include bulk of fruits, vegetables, and fiber in your diet. Have a bran muffin or bran cereal for breakfast, and try eating a piece of fruit for a mid-afternoon snack.

Make a Schedule

Schedule time each day for a bowel movement (after breakfast, for example). Establishing a daily routine can help a great deal. Meals at odd times should be avoided.

Other Treatment Methods for Constipation

Fresh air, outdoor games and exercise tone up the muscles and also help in the treatment of constipation. Fresh air, outdoor games, walking, swimming, and exercise play an important role in strengthening the muscles, and thereby preventing constipation. Exercise more often. When you are up and moving, so are your bowels. The more you sit, the more slowly your bowels move. Just walking regularly can have a positive effect on your regularity. Try gentle exercise. Take a short walk each day. Gradually increase your walking time until you are walking for at least 20 minutes.

Yoga is particularly noteworthy as a physical fitness regime in relieving constipation. Yoga comprises of a variety of postures and movements, many of which stimulate and encourage the bowel functions. Practicing yoga can thereby enhance the digestive system functioning and eliminate the occurrence of digestive disorders like constipation. In addition to this, yoga also corrects breathing. Most of people today breathe in a wrong manner; short and shallow. It disturbs various bodily systems and triggers stress hormones. Meditation can also help in many areas of life. Take time to quiet the mind and relax the body. You will find it to be a refreshing break you look forward to.

Talk to your doctor before using an enema. Your doctor may need to check your symptoms or may suggest a different way to treat your constipation. A rectal glycerin suppository can do the trick quickly. Follow the directions on the label. Do not use more often than recommended on the label.

In difficult cases of constipation, it is better to try a saline (osmotic) laxative, such as Fleet Phospho-Soda, Milk of Magnesia, lactulose, or Miralax. Osmotic laxatives do not irritate the colon or cause dependence on laxatives like stimulant laxatives. However, you can occasionally try a stimulant laxative, such as Ex-Lax or Feen-a-Mint. Overuse of stimulant laxatives decreases the tone and sensation in the large intestine, causing dependence on laxatives. Do not use laxatives for longer than 2 weeks without consulting your doctor. Try a stool softener, like Colace, if stools are very hard.

listen, i had this problem. i couldn't go to school until i pooped somthing out otherwise i would be with a stomache for the rest of the day and it's uncomfortable to learn and concentrate. what i reccomend to do is eat purely and only vegetables and fruits, drink alot of water (up to 8 glasses), eat fiber (good cereal:Go Lean; eat it two hours before going to sleep), and about prune NO! don't reccomend this because it might have your stomach twirling all day. follow it as a strict diet and it will surely work! i just had to do it for two weeks but now went back to my regular food eating and i can finally use the bathroom every morning when i wake up WITHOUT NO PROBLEM

THE ULTIMATE CURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go out and buy Mangosteen juice (I used Lakewood brand). The recommended 1oz. 3 times a day, but drink at least 2oz. at least 4 times a day. Its a little bit expensive, but totally worth it and VERY good for you. This worked for me after a doctor told me that I needed a strong drug to make me go.

Its not what will always help you go when you havent been in a few days.. You have too have a proper eating diet, or this problem will always happen... the best way is too sort out a proper eating chart and stick too it.. and i promise you all this will go.. i had a very bad childhood with this and had too see docotors and all sorts.. not very nice.. but it was from eating all kinds of crap... soon as i changed to a healthy diet after 16 years of this kind of pain an trouble, i have never had it since.. im 23 now and im out everyday after work walking for a few hours with th dogs.. always drinkin water, instead of coke or lager.. never eat sweets or chocolate... it all sounds silly, but i feel so much healthyer now, and id never go back to my old habbits... i hope this helps some one, and i hope people follow in a nice fresh diet..

Many thanks for your time..

Besides eating a bowl of weatabix every morning, take a teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water twice a day if you can, the results will speak for themselves. Apple Cider Vinegar is second to none for all stomach upsets including bloating, belching, hiccups. It also prevents nausea and vomiting. It prevents flu and colds. Everyone should have a bottle, used everyday, no more complaints. Use it mixed with equal parts of water for skin applications to reduce puffiness under eyes, dark circles, acne, pimples, it even clears blackheads. Try it, you will not try anything else!

I suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Quite recently I've been drinking loads of pineapple juice which has lessened the need for laxatives. I'd learned this piece of information from someone and their pet rabbit. The rabbit had swallowed a hairball and it needed help to pass through it's system. The rabbit's owner fed it pineapple juice which helped the rabbit flush the hairball out of its digestive system. This may sound unusual, but it was this information that helped me realise how pineapple juice can also help people. Try it and you might be surprised how effective pineapple juice is for a person's digestive system. =o)

Dip a Green Tea Bag in 6 oz cup of boiling water, then add 1/2 tsp of natural honey. After it cools enough to drink down, wait less than 1/2 hour. Voila!! Do this every morning and your colon will love you.

I figured out every time i did this i really needed the loo so im guessing it is a sort of laxative! Cheap and you dont have to spend ridiculous prices over the counter. Seriously its worth a try! I recently underwent surgery for rectum cancer and as a result was left with a permanent colostomy bag. My diet is poor and I didn`t drink more than a glass of water a day. Last night after going 10 days without passing anything of substance I decided to drink a pint of water. Two hours later I felt a hard piece of waste half protruding from the hole in my stomach,I removed the colostomy bag and strained a little. The result was spectacular, the hard waste( about the size of a wheel nut!) shot out and I was pouring waste out for five minutes. Today I`m still getting rid of waste and I feel so much better. WATER is what did it for me and I`m now determined to drink mainly water always. Goodluck people.

in answer to the problem with your 3 year old daughter, give her pear juice a couple of times. heinz makes it and it is only found in the baby food isle at the grocery store and comes in a 950 ml bottle.

Hi all
My daughter is 4 yrs old. She is suffering from constipation almost all her life. Recently it bcame so bad. Last one month she almost never had a normal bowel movement. I used enemas three times (with doctors advice) to clean her bowel. Again she did not go for last three days. We went to doctor and he prescribed lactulose. We are giving that for last one week but not working. So lets tell u what I m tryng now.
I give her one glass of little warm water in the morning in empty stomach. Then she eats her breakfast . I give her one tablsespoon of olive oil with some pear juice. during launch and dinner evryday I give her broccoli or spinach with rice and chicken/fish. everyday during dinner I give her one tbs of flex seed powder with dinner and after dinner at least one glass of water. Everyday at least once a tbs of brown sugar followed by a glass of water. everyday she eats few pieces of cantalope and apple/ pear. Then I blend some cantaole and feed her that too. I restricted her milk by 16 oz. I give her a tbs of corn syrup with milk. I used to give her 8 oz prune juice everyy morning for few months but recently I stopped it becasue it is not working. Poor girl, drinks at leat 5 glass of water everyday. I don't give almost any junk food to her. Recently I read a procedure "applying few drops of castor oil on naval" during night time. I even tried that. I tried gentle tummy message, positive re-enforcement. Nothing is working. Anyone, please give me some ideas.
(lemon with water is not good for her)

:-( been stopped up my entire life. i'm the brunt of too many family jokes. remember parents giving me castoria as a child. 41 years later, colonoscopy, watermelon, warm water in the a.m. raisin bran(8grams of fiber) benefiber, prune juice, only drink water whole life, phasing out white food. 'go' once a week. friend sells herbs and she has suggested a daily regimen of 3500mg vitamin c, 3 capsules of magn complex, probiotic(acidopholus), a product called 'gentle move,' freeze dried aloe vera to sooth and calm stomach lining, chlorphyll to keep the good flora good(1T for every 16oz of water) and 2-3food enzymes before each meal to aid in digestion. it's quite a regimen and one that i hope to do for a week or two and then phase out one or two, continue to cut out white. if this works, it will truly be a miracle!!!!!!!!! happy cra**ing

I hav been constipated for over 40 years. Tried all the different laxatives, enemas and pills. Still constipated. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
#67 - Lady TM - 08/24/2009 - 00:14
Keep up on the water, too! Another key aspect to squatting when removing your bowels is making sure you have enough folate in your diet. If you don't, you can squat and still be constipated! A quick-acting dose could be a tall glass of grapefruit juice or a raw spinach salad or both!
In conclusion, drink your water, get your folate, and most important...SQUAT WHEN YOU GO!

When I first started having this problem last year, I had a colonoscopy last and the only thing they found was a polyp(pre-cancerous). After the procedure they prescribed Citrucel, and told me "don't strain" because I had so many hemorrhoids from trying so hard to go. Sigh. Anyways, for awhile it was fine, but recently the problem has returned. I usually know I have to go but it just won't come out. If its been a day or two I will head to the bathroom knowing my impending doom...I have to wet my finger and stick it up there and bingo, there's always four or five very hard lumps that I have to (PAINFULLY!) coax down, and then after that SO much soft or almost runny stool that comes down. I don't try to push hard but I have crazy hemorrhoids...could that be why my stool is not coming down? Hermorrhoid blockage? If anyone has a knowledgeable answer please let me know! Its so miserable and my insides burn! I have to spend at LEAST twenty minutes on the toilet if I decide to poo, and my finger always stinks! Haha.
#75 - kelsey - 09/27/2009 - 09:54
Ajwain seeds (Trachyspermum copticum
) - 1/2 tea spoon. It is peppery to taste - almost like thyme.

We dry roast them , add a pinch of salt (for taste) and chew them well (basically it has to assimilate into your saliva). Follow it up with a glass of luke warm water. Do this an hour after your lunch AND dinner for 2 days.

Traditionally this we consider a sure shot , good ole gramma remedy for indigestion and poor bowel movement. It works like charm for us.

You can obtain Ajwain seeds from any Indian grocery stores. It is not very expensive .
#76 - Velli - 09/29/2009 - 11:46
The way you sit on the toilet has an effect on how you pass your bowel movement. My Dr. told me to put me feet up. This helps the flow of your Bowel. This will help your child as well. I just prop my bathroom trash can under my feet. It's easy. Also coffee will work as a quick laxative, but be near a restroom as it will have a quick effect for you IBS people. Hope this helps you.
#77 - mom2-3 - 10/09/2009 - 06:01
1)Banana a day (without missing)will keep the constipation away. It really works.
2)Take green leafy veg everyday without fail.
3) Intake of carrot, more veg, plenty of water regularly will restructure your digestive system.
4)Cut the papaya into half. Divide the 1/2 papaya into 3 pieces (for morning, afternoon and night)and eat 1peice each with breakfast, lunch & Dinner. Consume the left half portion the next day. So 1 papaya for 2 days as your regular food supplimentary.

Hello all! My mother reccently had problems with constipation and, being the health nut I am, I set to work to help her solve it. She has a colon problem and can't (well, not suppose to) eat nuts or corn, etc. but she has been and she paid the price with constipation. I bought her some Aloe juice (you can find at local Asian markets), honey, and just some regular coffee and had her drink 3 cups throughout the day of each. Actually worked like a charm. She had been stoved up with intense pain for 4 days. She also eats guacomole(sp?) when she doesn't have time to make the drinks, and that seems to have helped a lot, too. Another tip: Google foods high in fiber and try to eat those.
#80 - Boss - 10/23/2009 - 10:03
for constipation very simple thing
warm milk with two or three table
spoon sugar just mix and drink this is really helpful. or you can have
five figs with warm milk.

Hi all. I have been reading all of your posts and plan to try some of the thing that are available to me. I live in a small town so we don't have a huge selection of non common veggies, fruits, herbal supplsements. Here is my story. I have had constipation issues since i was a baby. I am now 33. My parents used to give me soap enema's I remember the pain well since it never did stop. I am taking a new therapy drug called subutex after taking up 160 vicodin a month that yes my old doctor had me taking and I had several severe constipation issues with that, but it seemed if I kept up on my senecot every night I went every morning. I have not had a bowe movement in 8 days now and I am miserable. I have tried everything I had at home. Senecot, miralax, fiber choice supplements, lubrication, enema all in the past 16 hours and I was able to pass with much painful pushing two small hard poo's I can feel the pain in my rectum from the pushing. I am even having to push to pee and then my butt bleeds, but still no poop. I am miserable and just took my bedtime dose of senecot. How can a person take all this stuff with no results. Oh and the water I am drinking is insane. Like 8-10 bottles every single day. Can anyone please help with something that will make me go with no pain and with the stuff I should be able to find in our local small pharamacy or grocery store. I am just miserable. I have a 19 month old daughter who needs my attention and all I did today was sit on the toliet trying to go. Please Help!!
#86 - sickntired - 11/03/2009 - 20:03

#88 - funky - 11/04/2009 - 10:14
I had been backed up for days, tried Dilcolax, and an enema-nothing-I found this site and 2 people said put your index finger in the middle of your chin and apply pressure for 5 minutes-and out it came! I am in complete SHOCK and RELIEF!! Try it!
#89 - Stephanie - 11/05/2009 - 02:38
To Roxana, my daughter is 5, and has had extreme constipation issues since birth. One month she went three times only. She was obviously very ill. Large daily doses of miralax, zantac, plenty of fluids, and high fiber diet usually work. Took quite a while before we found out that the combination of Mirilax and zantac was what worked. You may want to google Hershprungs (sp?) disease and see if that seems to possibly fit. She's doing badly again, so we are trying mollases and oil for tonight. Poor girl!
#90 - Joy - 11/11/2009 - 22:57
I take morphine tabs for pain...very constipating! The peanut butter with maple syrup, a cup of quite warm water, then slow sit-ups or push-ups for 5 minutes does the trick for me.
#91 - Gail - 11/18/2009 - 16:55
:-D I tried the index finger on the chin & wahooooo it worked! For real... Sounds crazy but it did it for me. Thanks for the advise whoever came up with this one!
#92 - Relieved - 11/27/2009 - 21:28
hey all sufferers! I tried the brown sugar and glass of water and it worked. I woke up in the morning and didn't eat anything but the brown sugar and water and within an hour i pooped :-D.
#93 - Ruby - 12/01/2009 - 20:45
I bought the james zeta 18 in 4 diet for weight loss. I have been told over the years that I have IBS, I'm lactose intolerant, have gluten allergy etc etc, None are true!! Just actually constipated - couldn't go more than once a week, and then all the usual problems- before this, now go on avergae every other day and feel much better in general. Sometimes everyday Yippee!!

This diet is amazing, I did it for weight loss, which works wonders but the diet actually clears out your system no matter how bunged up you may get, then if you eat bran flakes every morning and drink a lot of water and fresh fuit and veg, I find I'm good for a month or so and feel SO WELL!!
Then if I get the feeling that I'm getting bunged up again I do the four day diet again and it resets everything. Buy it. I has changed my life.
I do it every two months on average and do not need to do anything else. It really has changed my life. :-)
#94 - Adults... If all else fails try this. - 12/03/2009 - 14:16

#97 - tillal - 12/13/2009 - 14:37
I've been constipated for a month and I've taken tons of stool softeners laxatives ect. I've increased my fibre and water intake. I s even tried olive oil and castor oil. I can feel the blockage of poop above my belly button :( I just want to be normal and have decent BM's seriously! I am only 21 and dont want to live like this for the rest of my life. I tried Nature Slim Tea which is usually found online or Asian Supermarkets.....Steep a tea bag for a few minutes and drink the tea before going to bed and in the morning you will have a clean colon! EVERYTHING will pour out like a waterfall LOL BUT, I only drink this tea if its my last resort.....Whenever I drink this tea for relief purposes, it gives me deadly cramps, makes me dizzy and nautious...maybe because im 110lbs idk? but its extrememly painful and i've passed out twice due to this tea. I dont know what to do!!
#98 - Melina - 12/16/2009 - 04:08
My sister and I have this problem of father too (so it's in the family I guess !!)
I never tried anything to solve this issue..although it's really painfull ;I start to bleed a lot when I poo cuz of huge hemorhoide I's getting really worse and worse..So I decided to do something..
I will try the easiest suggestion I read in your comments: 1-drinking cold water with brown sugar..hope it works
2-then I will try pinaple juice.
3-then honey with lemon .
I will see if I get any result.

I have tried the cocunut oil, apple cider viniger, priobiotics, about 84 oz of water a day and still having troubles. I will see about trying some more of these.

It seems in most cases it's "WATER" that does the trick.
#104 - WILLIAM - 01/07/2010 - 15:50
Hi. I'm fourteen and I have been struggling with constipation my whole life. Recently I managed to stay regular for a year and a half but not anymore. What helps is plastic gloved and picking out the hard parts with your fingers. Sounds gross but after two weeks it will come right out. However I have an [@] fissure now so it hurts to do it. Tomorrow I am going to try the chin method. Would anyone mind clarifying
how it works actually? I have some idea
but it would be nice to have solid basis.

Also McDonald's chicken nuggets can make you go so fast. Ate one while three MONTHS constipated and I've never pooped like that before, you lose all control and it just comes out. As with Pizza Hut cheese pizza and several glasses of water.
#105 - Rkv - 01/12/2010 - 01:02
Sugar free candy. I get the lifesavers. Eat about 10 candies and you will go!
#106 - kim - 01/12/2010 - 22:59
This works instantly. Drink a glass of warm milk.
#107 - cp - 01/15/2010 - 08:37
To be quite honest, the best cure for constipation is HOT Water! Not so hot that it burns but hot enough you can sip it without getting burned. Your body will sweat our impurities. Your body will use the hot water to send toxins to your intestines and then it will use the hot water to flush out your intestines. My Grandmother drank 2 cups of hot water and walked back and forth through her house EVERY MORNING, until she went to the bathroom. She did this religiously. Try it consistantly it will work. God bless!
#108 - SMM - 01/15/2010 - 09:34
To add to the above, Just keep drinking the hot water and walking until you are done going!
#109 - SMM - 01/15/2010 - 10:00

That was over an hour ago and nothing has happened. My rear is plugged up like there are 15 rugby defensemen up ther. Been like this since I had surgery 5 days ago. Been takin docusate calcium like the doc ordered and it aint doin nothin! Wish me luck.....

Heeey Youuuuu Guyyyyys!
Hello my fellow sufferers >-(. I have been stopped up for over a month now :-( and I gotta tell you I've tried everything from fiber capsules, fiber laxitive capsules, to apple cider vinegar, lime juice in warm water, warm milk, to the peanut butter and syrup concoction. Even tried sitting here while I read all your post with my finger on my chin (as you can tell I've been trying to stay with the natural remedies). Some of these things maybe worked the first time but never complete relief. My husband suggested black olive juice, about 32oz of it. He swears by it! After co-workers bet him, when he was working at a pizza joint, to down exactly that amount, he couldn't get off the toilet 45 min later . Well, feeling at the end of my rope I went to my local King Soopers (Krogers to some) intending to purchase about 4 cans of the stuff. I headed to the produce section to get some lemons. thinking that it could only help aid the aformentioned juice. Well I just happened to pass the "digestion" area in the store. I thought "forget it! I'm just gonna get a synthetic laxitive" So I decided on a cheaper version of correctol. I just happened to keep looking and my eyes passed over th mineral oil (gag!) the castor oil (yuck!) and my eyes rested on this 10oz bottle filled with a red liquid. MAGNESIUM CITRATE! For under 2 BUCKS!!!! A shot in the dark, but for less that 2 dollars, I'll take it. I got home read the directions and took it accordingly. In 1 hour heard that welcomed embarrassing sound of digestion....and boy was it loud!:-o 2 and a half hrs later I had a small, hard bowel movement!!!!! Four hours later.....THE FLOOD GATES OPENED :-P !!!!!! I could not believe it...after a whole flipping month and for less than 2 dollars IT happened!:-P The way the magnesium citrate works is that it absorbs water from the body into the intestine and just ushers everything out. I experienced some cramping and alot of urination along with it. You can get dehydrated so drink lots of water!! So I put the olives in the cupboard for eating and warned my husband and daughter to clear a path to the bathroom!!! This worked for me in just hours, I hope you have the same luck. So may your bowels be loose and your toilet paper be soft. B-) Good luck!

For hemeroids,I dabbed on DMSO it shrunk them in a few days.
Also if taking calcium you are suppose to take magnesium
#116 - jeana - 02/16/2010 - 23:32
I've found magnesium supplements work really well for me. They say that most people are low in magnesium. I had to experiment with the dosage. I found 2 with breakfast and one about 4 in the afternoon works well for me. It also helps me sleep. I take magnesium oxide-which they say is the hardest on the stomach, but as long as I take them with food, they don't bother me. You might want to google which magnesium would be best. They've worked wonders for me.
#117 - Jenny - 02/17/2010 - 20:30
PEOPLE WERE NOT MEANT TO POO WHILE SITTING!!! Sitting on a toilet puts a kink in your colon and makes it difficult for anything to come out. It is much better to crouch on top of the toilet or at least put your head to your knees. Also, it is very difficult for humans to digest protein and carbohydrates at the same time. Try to only have one or the other in your meals. In the morning, drink some water or green tea and massage from the right side of your tummy up across the top and down the left side...
#118 - brittany - 02/20/2010 - 00:46
I had been constipated for two days, so after trying everything else under the sun, I googled natural remedies for constipation and came across the BEST remedy I had never thought of. Eat 1 tablespoon of Brown sugar (of any description) and chase it with a big glass of water...within minutes I felt better than I had in days and my stomach returned to soft.

#119 - Mikalah - 02/20/2010 - 11:46
i tried the honey and lemon.. its been 4hrs nothing.. now im gonna try the hot water lime juice and salt.. next will be water and molasses... i hope i goooooo!!! im so full of crap... i have tummy pains and feel all bloated!!
#120 - lorena - 02/20/2010 - 22:50
Keep drinking water. Constipation is dehydration (Read Dr. Batmanghelidj's book). I get comfortable success with a lot of hot water followed by Triphala Churna (half to 1 teaspoon)steeped overnight in a cup of boiled water(Dabur brand works fine to me) very bitter but it works; it worked even better when I did the finger on the chin-within 10 minutes I managed to get rid of some loose nasty stools.
#121 - Sasha - 02/27/2010 - 05:20
i have cronic problems with irritable bowel syndrome my doctors have put me on many different medicines but i have found the best way to help with my contipation is to drink hot tea any way u want it but it works wonders for me and youll go a little while after drinking the tea.

I have been dealing with this constipation for a long time, but the last year has been absolutely miserable. I cant go for 5 or days at a time and feel totally impacted but cant go. I have also taken miralax, laxatives, gas pills, enema and last suppositories. cant believe I resorted to that with very little help. I am going to try the finger under the chin and the brown sugar and water also.

but honestly (and it takes a few days to work) PRUNES. the obvious answer. ya have to eat like 3 of em a day and youll start pooping so much youll think youve never pooped so much. just keep eatting them every day, maybe eat a few more on days ya have a problems.

After stool softeners, laxatives and an enema... it was nature that got me going. LoL.

Try 2tbsp of physillium hulls powder with 8oz of juice or water, followed by 8oz of water with 2 cascara sagrada capsules, do this 15 min. before breakfast and dinner, drink plenty of water, exercise, eat healthy, avoid white flour, white bread, pastries, too much red meat, etc.

when i first got my period i realised the sighs of constipation. And guess what it really did come and my life was miserable so i said to myself i'm gonna end this, what really helped me was a total change in my diet.I already use to eat plenty of fibre and i had no sickness associated with constipation so what am i gonna do i thought? however God helped me and i found out that eating flaxseed products along with prunes and neem products work wonderful. I hope it works because i don't want anybody to go through what I did.:-D

For those of you with severe constipation, try using Magnesium Citrate. You can find it in the pharmacy department of almost any grocery store and it is very inexpensive. Take it as directed (mix with some sprite due to the horrible taste) and be ready to go within 10 minutes. This is used as a bowel prep prior to many intestinal surgeries/procedures. Can't be used on a regular basis due to dependency but good if there is a minor blockage.

black licorice. black vines, jelly beans, anything black licorice flavored. the more you eat, the faster it works. also, dried apricots. just don't overeat or you'll end up with the opposite problem. good luck.

Low fat high fiber vegan diet, drinking 12 cups water a day, 20-30 min. exercise a day, eating candied ginger, taking a magnesium supplement everyday too.

#138 - ............ - 04/12/2010 - 22:42
i did a combination of methods listed and it worked like a charm!!! I mixed one tablespoon of black mollasses into rather warm water and drank it as quickly as possible and immediately followed it with a glass of very cold water. almost right away i could feel my stomach soften up. i also did the index finger under the chin thing with my feet propped up and within minutes i was relieved!! not sure which one worked best but the combination of it all did wonders!!!
#139 - Ashley - 04/13/2010 - 09:32
Okay.... firstly, I never in my life thought I'd be schlepping around the internet desperately seeking a a remedy for constipation!!! I have been absolutely miserable for the last 5 days!!! Tried all the stupid store stuff (laxitives, supositors, fiber, etc.) none worked, and the fiber bloated me up so bad I thought i was having a heart attack!!!!

Honestly.... I JUST tried this and it took approx 30 min's to work, but IT WORKED!!! Drink 2 cups chicken broth or broth from ckn noodle soup (no noodles). Heat it up as hot as you can stand to swallow it -- u want to drink it ALL while it's hot, not warm.

Then follow it with 2 cups of something icy cold (I had iced tea with some sugar and ice cubes). Drink that quickly also. THIS IS IMPORTANT: Move around your house, nothing overly strenuous, I dusted and cleaned countertops, lol. And my stomach liiterally started 'rumbling' like it growls when ur hungry, and then, ta da!!!! I didn't 'clean' me out, but it at least got things movin on out!!! Never in my life have I been SO uncomfortable and distressed!!!! Had no idea one could feel so sick and be in so much pain. Hope it works for someone else too!!!! I'm convinced it was the combo of steaming hot greasy broth, the moving around, then the cold liquid to force the hot further in. Am going to repeat in a little while.

k guys this might only be for a couple of time's of healing with this problem but i came home from work and pretty much realized how bad i was constipated it was extreemly uncomfortable so i called my mom and she advised prune juice (pure) well i was to lazy to run to the store but it got too uncomfortable so looked around my appartment to seew what i could find... 100% corn oil! yeah man i tried it and had only a table spoon and i tasted gorrid but i drank just a tiny bit of water and layed down a bit and went on my computer it took about a half an hour and u can feel the need to go but give it a bit of time dont push lol.... just try to relax and within minutes its over... its not that pain full i almost cheered it was realy fast and effective try it for sure cant go wrong!
#141 - simple solution - 04/19/2010 - 12:18
Been constipated all my life, or at least since I can remember. I have tried everything from laxatives, the magnesium citrate, to castor oil......but only works for a couple of days. I feel lots of abdominal pain and my stomach feels hard at times. I can't afford to go to a doctor so I am stuck with whatever I can afford from the medicine counter or at home remedies. What I am most sick of is the low-energy level which might be most likely due to the constipation. I have tried blaming my diet, but everybody in my household eat the same thing and they go just fine. I even eat healthier then them most of the time since they refuse to jump on the bandwagon with me when it comes to eating veggies, drinking water, and no fast food. Don't really know what to do anymore. Please help! :-(
#142 - hopeless - 04/22/2010 - 09:36
Try using a soft hose by pressing between thumb and index finger to cause pressure of water and stick it to the anus. Let the sprayed water goes right in to soften the stool. The watery stool will come out easily. Unconventional, but it helps... and cheap!
Better than sticking finger in.

My daughter STRUGGLED with pooping at age 2-3. She would hold it in all day for a number of days. She struggled and cryed sometimes. Once she had had a bowel movement that I had to help "deliever" because only part came out. We tried mineral oil and juice. I tried glycerine suppositories too. That was just terriable for her and me. Everytime I felt like I was abusing her.
Finally used half cap of miralax in 12 oz cup of apple juice 2 times a day, am and around dinner time. Once she got loose I cut doseage back to am half capful in juice to maintain. She is 5 now. No miralax needed. We just make sure she has fluid and talk about how everyone does stinky poops. She still does not like to go at school, but she never goes more than 2 days without a movement.

Mom has tried the brown sugar in water been 2 hrs no movement. Must try something else.

What was happening:
I had been having constipation very

regularly, I had tried a lot of laxatives,

some times ended up taking laxatives once in

a week. Then I had tried even magnesium

citrate to flush my system. One day I had

picked up Aloe Vera dessert packet from a

Global Foods store and used it. The packet

had chunks of Aloe Vera in a juice that was

made very sweet. It was actually tasty and very good.
It made a difference like never before. I

started feeling very light and my bowel

moments had become very regular. I do not

feel boalted any more. I wanted to tell about

this in all forums for Constipation, because

the cure to the problem is in the nature of

the system and Aloe Vera restores the system.

Hope it helps, let me know for questions:

Constipation is not a disease, but a symptom. Sometimes it becomes so severe, that it leads to chain of symptoms such as weakness, fissures, etc. Traditionally used natural therapies (Biogetica) offer an excellent combination of resonance homeopathic, naturopathic and nutritional supplements for treating constipation. They assist in restoring normal movements, improve the enzymatic activity within the gastrointestinal tract and reinstate the normal bowel flora. Generally an immediate improvement in bowel movements are noticed, which return to normal on completion of treatment protocol. They are effective alternatives to laxatives. Natural remedies provide you with an effective, natural and non habit-forming solution to Constipation.

I did the finger on the chin thing and between chasing a 2 yr old and trying to sit and prop my feet, it took about 15-20 min. Also, in between that, I had 1 TBS of Brown sugar and followed it with ice water. Feeling MUCH better now.

Squatting over newspaper and applying pressure to my chin below and front with thumb and forefinger..worked really well.
Fully agree that the normal sitting position is a hinderance as I found nothing happened when sitting, and when I stood up I felt the need to go, so I tried standing to get it started but it was'nt until I squatted holding my chin it all came out.
Did'nt have to worry about weeing everywhere, as during the constipation I could'nt even wee..but as soon as the bulk came out I was able to wee again.
Had been trying for 8 hours to go, eating pears and some prune juice, made a soup of carrots, spinach, garlic, alfalfa sprouts and kidney beans.
Iam 63 years old, and figure after reading some of the comments on the prostate, that the position one tries to do it is vital..
Would like to thank all you people that helped me with your comments, and only hope that mine will help others as well.
Normally I do'nt have trouble, but after a few days of stodgy foods and little water at this age I get really blocked up.
Good luck...definately try the SQUAT!

My doctor says to try & get as many fibers as possible. All Bran Cereal has many fibers, but tastes awful. So I buy fiber bars & they taste really good & have much grams of fiber. Also a lot of water. Ask your doctor about using Miralax. Its a powder to soften stools & it has no flavor what so ever :D

Wow. Tried the finger on the chin thing, was a bit skeptical since it seem so silly but it really worked. It's been about 2 weeks since I've had a BM and have been trying for days, and after 2 minutes of the finger on the chin thing I felt so much better. Hurts a little bit if it's hard, but for a quick remedy if you don't have other things around the house try this for sure!
#171 - MIA - 08/13/2010 - 23:03

#172 - MIA - 08/13/2010 - 23:06
I tried the pressure point on my chin, pushing it with my finger. I have had really good luck with pressure points before for other things.
WOW within a few minutes of doing this I had a natural bm... Not only that, within the next day I had several more natural feeling bm's.... every time I felt better and better.
I will Never forget this pressure point exercise. And I'm beginning to look up even more pressure point info for other problems. Cheap, very effective, and No medicine. Works for me! ;-)

is it under or on the chin?

blocked up with pebbles
#174 - Mane - 08/26/2010 - 13:07
I have been drinking more water especially on an empty stomach 1st thing in the morning, since yesterday, today had a small bottle of 100% prune juice first thing after the water today. Seems to be helping...had some movement yesterday & today more & the 'pebbles' are definetly alot softer. I prefer slow improvement like this than the 'expolsion' of laxatives which make you end up constipated again anyway. Prune juice is all natural but not that great tasting.
#175 - Mane - 08/28/2010 - 07:36
Give this a shot on a day you plan to be home at least a few hours in the morning:
1) full glass of cold water
2) tablespoon of molasses
3) another full glass of water
4) raspberry juice (juicy juice makes an apple raspberry that ought to work, also... raspberries are VERY high in fiber) MIXED WITH FLAX SEED OIL (1 tablespoon)
5) 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, (lemon juice optional but you may find it covers the flavor of the vinegar), and hot BLACK tea (not green or herbal, there are specific properties in black tea that aid in this process)

Continue drinking water as you see fit... you can also try pressing your finger into the center of your chin as earlier suggested... it certainly can't HURT!

As for regulating yourself, the normal: diet, exercise, fiber fiber fiber, hydration hydration, hydration, and learn your trigger foods. I put Half N Half in my coffee instead of milk and didn't eliminate for TWO WEEKS. A mistake I will not make again. PS. Light Yogurt (low/no sugar) will definitely help, it does NOT have to be name brand, like Activia if an alternative is cheaper!

Well holy crap! (Literally) I have been constipated for the past month due to new pain meds. I have been absolutely miserable for the past 3 days, and was actually desperate enough to google "constipation cure Natural" and came across this page. I saw some things that I figure I'd try in the morning, or would run to the grocery store and get tomorrow after work or something. Unfortunately I do not currently have enough of anything in my house to "make" anything listed here. I saw several listings about " index finger on chin." At first I thought it was a joke, then in an utter act of desperation... i tried it. IT WORKED!!!! I'm not sure if it was in my head or if it really did work, but I feel 10000% better now!

Thanks so much for all of the great ideas. I will try them next time I am in crisis like I was this morning. Sometimes the poop is so big I just can't get it out - it is like a breach birth! I also have a fissure which opens up and bleeds regularly. The doctor says to use a glove and some KY and stretch myself. Can't say I have tried it yet but do intend to. As for the hemmys, he told me to stop using soap on them and they miraculously disappeared with two weeks. Amazing. Going to try the molasses, the magnessium supplement, the crouch and the chin pressure point. Thanks again.

Hia all, good luck with this, but it really works for me: Soap Suppository. Just cut a piece of soap about the size of a regular glycerin suppository and stick it up there - hold it for as long as you can, dont be tempted to release straight away. The longer you hold on the better the results! Seriously, its a family remedy that works EVERY time......

Wouldn't have believed it if I had not tried it.
Brown Sugar and cold water, combined with the chin pressure point. It took 1/2 an hour, and then have gone 4 times since.
Of course it goes without saying, but I will say it. If you are going to try something, make sure you can commit to being near a bathroom. When my stomach pain hit, I had about 10 seconds to get to the toilet.
#184 - Yay! - 10/03/2010 - 17:01
About a year ago, my stomach started bloating. Previously I'd had some constipation, but not bad like this. Couldn't eat much because my stomach was bloating so much and yet didn't lose weight.
Started to take sleep aid because it kept me from sleeping and sometimes even felt dizzy.

Tried apple juice followed by prune juice followed by more liquid, Senna tea (Indian tea), magnesium supplement and milk of magnesia. (Always drink a glass of water in the morning.) Sometimes they worked, but eventually stopped working and just made my stomach more bloated.
Went through colonoscopy and my gastroenterologist diagnosed me as IBS and prescribed Amitiza. He also gave me some sample of it, but it didn't work for me. Tried Benefiber since he recommended, but didn't work, either. Wanting to get some natural way, searched website for a while and found enema kit for home. Also found macrobiotic diet and Edgar Cayce diet.

Those saved my life! I used filtered water for enema for about a month and made my stomach feel soooo clean! (Some people use coffee, but I prefer drinking it from my mounth.) As for diet, stopped to put milk or cream (oh, I love them!) to coffee/tea and limited the intake of other dairy products as well. Switched to brown rice, avoided heavy meal especially in the morning, fatty food and sweets (mostly baked goods). Realized animal fat, dairy products and white sugar somewhat clogged my system. Often saw some fiber-like white stuff came out after I used enema.

Now my stomach is back to normal again! Still use enema occasionally, but not much anymore. No more sleeping aid and no more dizziness! Want to share my story with people who suffer the similar condition as I had.;-)

Im 18, and i very recently moved into a shared apartment. for as long as i can remember i've always had my own bathroom, so i am obviously really shy about sharing a toilette with other people. as a result i haven't been going regularly... this became a huge problem recently as i got constipated often :-(

this morning i tried to go but all that come out were two little hard stones. the rest just wouldn't come out. i spent the whole day in pain...awful unending pain made worse by having to sit half the morning.

making my way home i decided it had to end. looking at the comments here, i saw many repeating coffee (which i had) and the finger on the chin thing. so, not wanting to trep my way to the shop, i drank cold coffee with lots of milk and sugar, then went on the loo with my feet up and holding my chin. At first it felt really funny and didn't work but then....I don't know, was it the coffee kicking in, my feet being up or the chin holding? either way a combination of all three had me going normally again.

I'm now very relieved, empty and swearing never to ignore a BM again. thanks for all the tips it really helped!;-)

I have been sufferring from constipation all my life (i'm 29). I eat healthy diet and drink plenty of water. But i have noticed that i get constipated when i'm in stress. So my advice would be not to stress out! And also, watch your diet, no sugary pastries, processed foods, eat plenty of fruits+veggies, make sure you have breakfast and stimulate your bowels by light excercize in the mornings. And avoid medicines. It all takes time and patience but in the long run you'll notice the difference.

It makes sense to eat a well balanced diet with plenty of roughage, drink plenty of water in between meals, etc. But my favorite two things to do when I get blocked are to drink 1-2 glasses of luke warm water quickly and to add powdered CAYENNE PEPPER to my food, at least once everyday. The PEPPER has been the BEST remedy I have ever found in the many years of trying things. I don't use too much because I don't like real hot flavorings, but it only takes a little bit for me, just sprinkle a little on. It makes me feel good all over actually. Another thing I have quit using is ibuprophen, which is a anti-prostiglandin. Prostiglandins help your stomach and intestins build the protective lining in the digestive system which helps in digesting foods and protecting against inflammation. So those of you who have IBS, quit the ibuprophen use and don't be afraid to use CAYENNE PEPPER. Check it out on the internet and see all the other health benefits of PEPPER. Hello, I'm Roxyana. I'm seventeen, and have been constipated on and off for the entirety of my life.
I can go literal months without.. err, going.

But, there are things I have found that can help you.

Green grapes, for example. Just.. keep.. eating them. The entire bag if you can. I'm not certain why they help (perhaps the fiber? Or maybe the yeast..?) but they are wonderful at relieving stubborn constipation.
Eat them on an empty stomach.

Apples are also good as a preventative. Just eat one a day, whatever kind you prefer. Golden Delicious, Gala, and Pink Ladies are my personal favorites.

Not that it's really natural, but Dulcolax made this dissolve-able.. fiber.. stuff.. that you drink with your water. You can't taste it, and it WILL help you to move.

Sitting down, I've found, makes it much more painful and unpleasant to pass difficult stool. Try leaning over something (like your sink...) don't try and pass it sitting.
And I know what your thinking, but relief first, clean-up later.

You've got to do what you've got to do, and whatnot.

Enemas will help you, but they are horribly unpleasant and I'm mildly afraid of them. But, if you've no other choice.. well, they WILL make you move.

My aunt drinks ice-cold prune juice and follows it with hot coffee. She recommends that you take the drinks into the rest room with you, and drink them in there.. apparently, they work quickly.

I hope this helps someone.
Good luck, fellow sufferers.

Wow....these remedies sound great. My mom went on a fast for a week and drank the green tea with honey and it worked like a charm! I usually get constipated from time to time and what I do is try eating the fiber cereal for a day or two and it make me go. This morning I tried eating yogurt and sprinkled the fiber cereal in it.... an hour later went to the bathroom. I felt a 100 lbs lighter!!:-D

i've tried almost everything that are mentioned here.. some of them worked, some did'nt... although some worked for me, my problem regarding constipation keeps coming back.. maybe because of my lifestyle... anyways, i'll still try those suggestions that i've never tried before.. thanks for this site....

;-) Ok, I have been constipated really badly for months. I've always had problems with it off and on since I was little. I've been under tremendous stress over the past 6 months, so wondering if that is the initial cause. Up til now, I've always used those wax suppositories. They burn like heck, but usually help things along within an hour. They haven't been working the last few weeks, so I was getting desperate. Yes, I even sank so low as to stuck my finger up my butt. sooooo gross. I'm a busy mom of three, so don't have time for this. While reading through the comments, I tried the warm water with honey and lemon. Then I tried the finger on chin (with doubt I must say). I don't know which one worked...but in 15 minutes, it all came out quickly (it hurt, because I have [@] fissures and hemoroids), but it came out!

I haven't been drinking enough I strongly suggest drinking at least 8 glasses a day...along with fruits/veges...and it's good for you too!

#202 - jen - 12/13/2010 - 14:19
hey my doc recommnded my daughter who is 2 yrs laxopeg (laxative)powder in water for 3 weeks as she is got serious constipation prob. Can sumone tell me if its safe for kids n it works?ya she is got an [@] fissure too!

Not really a constant problem for me, but aggrevating when it rears it's ugly head. Today I took the advice about the brown sugar and water. Mainly because it was all I had around the house. But after an hour or so after eating the brown sugar and drinking about 4 glasses of water I had success. Could still do more but the major discomfort is g o n e!!!!!

I have been really constipated lately and was wondering why. I thought it could have been because of the [email protected] [email protected] I had been having, but the next time we had it after I was constipated it help me for a couple of days. I don't know what's wrong with my body. I feel so bad. But hey I tried the 1/2 cup olive oil and 1/2 cup orange juice just a little bit ago. I guess I'll have to see how it works. It was disgusting too, but not as bad as you would expect!!!
#211 - Constipated&Mad - 01/04/2011 - 21:07
I have been on pain meds for some time and a side effect is constipation. And it comes with a vengeance. First time, it freaked me out!!! I thought I was trying to have a baby thru my butt, and it hurt just as bad!!! But this time, I kinda knew what to expect. This time I had milk of magnesia, took a few swigs of that, made hot chocolate, drank about half and then drank a cold Emergen-C ( you can find it at Wal-Mart, its a powder that you mix with water) In about 20 minutes, I was okay! I'm going to keep all that in the house for sure from here on out!!!! It works wonders fast!!!
#212 - Holy Crap! - 01/05/2011 - 23:27
I have just read these home remedies, i have just tried the brown sugar followed by water... wish me luck. I will let you know how it works out.:-P
#213 - Agony Times Infinity! - 01/12/2011 - 14:48
I have had issues with constipation. I know for a fact that the water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach works. Also I had to really pay attention to what I was eating.. Kale seems to work well. ALso Spinach.. and even just Rommaine lettuce. I totally ELIMINATED beef from my diet, substituting it with Turkey. And also CORN.. Please to the mom whose child is constipated.. Help the poor baby by giving her/him more water!!!! and no chocolate, corn, too much carbs.,and If that doesnt work try MILK OF MAGNESIA before putting them to bed!! Dont try tomorrow TRY NOW!!!!!!
#214 - CANGONOW...3 - 01/14/2011 - 15:33
i also use magnesium citrate when i am constipated, which is quite frequently. it's the only thing that seems to work for me. it doesn't taste good but just drink the whole bottle as quick as you can and drink water right after. it works in anywhere from a half an hour to a couple of hours for me. but make sure you can be home for quite a while after taking it. it is inexpensive, approximately $2 at drugstores or supermarkets.

#218 - greatwork - 01/20/2011 - 19:17
It's been about a week since I've had a BM. I have started a new diet...I figure healthier eating is causing my insides some confusion, which is causing my constipation! I'm already drinking water with the diet, have tried laxitives, and have been taking Metamucil for 2 days now. So I tried taking the brown sugar and cold water, then the finger on the chin with no luck. So, I just mixed up some epsom salt and warm water and drank that. Hope it works, because I'm tired of being so MISERABLE!!!!
#219 - mrsfish - 01/21/2011 - 18:12
The index finger on the chin WORKS! Sounds really crazy but it does. Its not very comfortable doin it but IT WORKS! Lol im shocked really shocked! U should try it!!!
#220 - meeeee! - 01/21/2011 - 18:55
Some things that cause constipation:
-warm soft bread
-white bread
-low fiber foods
-processed foods

It is best if you go at least once a day. If not, it accumulates and won't go out. Coffee dehydrates the body, and water is what digests food. Our metabolism is made up of two parts: catabolism and anabolism. Catabolism takes apart by ADDING water and breaking down the covalent bonds.

If you have not gone in a week, it might be necessary to manually take it out. Yes, gloves and all.

Constipation is an EFFECT, not a cause.

#221 - Roxana - 01/23/2011 - 18:33
:-) been doing a cleansing and not soo good on the cleansing part cuz i got alil constipated w/ belly pain.. tried the pressure point on the chin and within 6 minutes i went smoothly :-D .... ate two prunes and downed a cup of hot jasmine tea with a teaspoon of molasses in it; followed a couple minutes later with ice water and am now waiting with finger on chin.

i have always been slow to go, with occasional periods of daily regularity. once every three days is more normal for mr. heard about magnesium supplements hekping with constipation and had great results for the first few days, taking 1 in the morning and one at night, along with my "new year's resolution" daily vitamins, including a fish oil supplement. After about a week or so, the regularty part dropped off and have had an unsettled belly for two or three days, feeling like
i was about to have a bout of diarrhea, and then nothing happens. also painful belly off and on every 20 min or half hour. I just wish I could have my husband's habits and go EVERY morning after two cups of coffee. Can't stand coffee and the caffeine in tea and sodas doesn't work for me that way either...

#224 - chrisert - 01/27/2011 - 12:16
I have found a 'miraculus' cure. Buckthorn berries! I call them 'go-go' berries - and they really work rapidly! Seem to help you to go naturally after a very few, and you will not need many. Take 2 dried berries per hour until you have to go. Don't worry it will not take long! Exlax was made from these in the beginning (I don't know what they use now).

Pregnant women NOT take castor oil! It can make you go into labor! Eat lots of high fiber foods, no white flour or sugar and drink lots of water. Psyllium seed husks mixed with warm water - drink it down fast- will help after a day or two.

I would recommend superb remedy for really works

One glass milk, half spoon salt, half spoon termaric powder, lemon juice (half lemon), boil it for almost 45 minutes and let it cool. Drink it ....

This is recommend by one of the famous Spanish Doctor.....

#232 - Jack - 02/24/2011 - 01:34
I've been there. The magnesium citrate works and is inexpensive. Hot water with the juice of a half lime and half tsp of sea salt works also but if it's been several days I go to the mag citrate.

One D'Anjou pear and a medium McDonald's hot caramel mocha works very well, or a pear and a 16 oz. of warm water.
#239 - Chris - 04/02/2011 - 14:13
I forgot to mention that you have to eat the pear and drink the mocha on an empty stomach. Also the same with the pear and water.
#240 - Chris - 04/02/2011 - 14:22
hey guys, how do you really do the chin thing?! sounds really crazy.. can we also use the thumb finger?

the warm water and the brown sugar didn't really work..

another option please?!.....
#241 - roni1126 - 04/07/2011 - 22:19
THE BROWN SUGAR THING WORKS !!!!!! It doesn't need to be dark brown sugar either... light works just fine. I have not had a BM in 3 days and had constant pressure, belly ache and cramping. Took a big spoonful of brown sugar and a few sips of water... It still felt like I was giving birth out my ass but it is out and I feel 2000% better !!!!!!

try drinking a glass of hot water(not boiling) upon waking up followed by a glass of cold water..

This company i used to work for has two AMAZING teas. The company is called DavidsTeas the first is golden puerh witch is a framanted black tea witch boosts your metabolism and gives your stomach and colon good bacteria. this tea is framented for 5 years and is PACKED with benificial probiotics that aren't found in yogurt. The second is The skinny dont be decived it will not make you majicly skinny but it is also a framented black tea with the addition of ginger for stomach balance and ginseng witch boost your metobolism blacks fat absorption and also has many probiotics. If you drink either of these three times daily you will see definate results. I was very regualr my whole life and changed vegetarian for a retreat and my body just shut down digesting, ihad so much built up it pushed my intestine up under my ribs and i was in serious pain. constipation is very unhealthy for your body and is very sensitive to stress.
#245 - Taylor - 05/25/2011 - 15:01
I have drank castor oil, taken enemas, ate laxatives everthing!! Mine was to serious for those to help, and i tried the finger on my chin and i don't think it did anything, im going to try the brownsugar and water since i cannot access the teas right now
#246 - Taylor - 05/25/2011 - 15:15
Im grateful to have regular BM's but i woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain in my stomach and unable to pass for a couple hours, so i drank 2 big glasses of water fast and it helped a bit, went and drank to more and helped some more, then a glass of hot green tea with honey and now i feel 100 times better. Also, i found that putting my feet up on the toilet seat helped as well. Who knew it could be that simple! Good luck, i know this is miserable :-)
#247 - Finally - 06/02/2011 - 05:55
I've had constipation since I was a kid (I'm 24 now). No joke.
Prunes help, papaya helps- but what works the most is working out. After getting my body to move around, I noticed that I had the sensation to go after working out. And the more crunches I did, the more easier it was for me to go.
Good luck to all are clogged :)

Use the Master Cleanse Flush:

6 oz Cleansing/Dieters Tea (Laci LeBeau is usually sold at WalMart) before you go to bed. When you wake, on an empty stomach drink the following:

32 oz of Filtered (or Spring) Water
2 Tsp of SEA Salt

STAY BY BATHROOM. Its like and interal enema and takes about 1-1.5 hours to completely purge.

use the tea as needed to keep yourself regular, but DON'T oversteep as too strong can cause cramping. Also, drink plenty of water before the flush, because you can't eat/drink until the purge is done (about 2 hrs).
#249 - JD - 06/22/2011 - 19:32
OOPS, MEANT TO SAY: Drink plenty of water the NITE BEFORE!
#250 - JD - 06/22/2011 - 19:39
I put my experience before (#186). Mine is so chronic, if I'm not careful, the sympton comes back at any time. When I feel it getting worse, I use enema almost every night. Usually less than two weeks, I get normal. The enema I use is not what you see at a pharmacy. It's not any chemial stuff, but just pure water. The amount is two-quarts and it purges my system. Try google, like "home enema kit". After I get normal, I don't have to use it for weeks.

Another easy relief I use is milk of magnesia or Senna tea. You have to take it before you go to bed and it works in the next morning aftrer you drink a glass of water or have breakfast. You shouldn't use it everyday though.

Recently, I found drinking two glasses of water before breakfast works, too. Then have breakfast consisting only fruit juice or fruit, no bagels, muffins, donuts, etc. You can drink tea of coffee, but not milk.

My daughter was constipated a lot when she was little. I used to take her to the doctor and all I ever heard was "eat more fiber". Have you ever tried to get a 4-yr old to increase their fiber intake? She already ate nothing but fruits, veggies, & milk, no cheese, & practically no meat. She hardly drank anything but water. I finally took her to a pediatric gastroenterologist (spelling?) & he recommended Miralax (it was prescription back then, but now you can get it & it's generic equiv. over the counter.). She took 1/2 a cap full at dinner mixed in with whatever she was drinking (usually water). He said that if it doesn't seem to be working increase the dose to a little or if it is working a little too well, cut back the dose. He said that it was perfectly safe for extended use because all it does is draw water into the stool. She is 11 now & we haven't had anymore problems until this week. LOL. I guess it's back to the MiraLax. It really was the only thing that worked for us in the past.
#254 - Diana - 06/29/2011 - 14:35
I can not believe that no one has mentioned this yet!! SENA TEA! You can get it in the HEALTH FOOD STORE. Take a cup a night and in the am you will be going for Sure!!
Old Irish remedy!
#255 - Eileen - 07/06/2011 - 14:49
1. First, lots and lots of water. I didn't realize it until just recently that this was causing a lot of my constipation (that and medications). I hate water, so I have been drinking sparkling water (the carbonation helps), lots of water with a little fruit juice for taste, crystal light in bottles of water and I cut back on all caffine. If you are going to have a coda then follow it by a glass of water.
Force the water down, all day long! Food just absorbs all the water you drink so flush out your system with lots of water.
2. Also, grapes- natural remedy. eat them everyday.
3. The squatting thing is true, but I will not squat on some newspaper or go on the floor! gross... so you CAN sit on the toilet just put your feet on books or something, lean over... it does make a difference. Our bodies were not made to go to the bathroom sitting down.
4. do NOT just shock your system with a bunch of fiber (fiber cereal, fiber bars, etc...) you will be come bloated and more stopped up. Introduce it slowly and naturally. Fruits and vegetables. Lord, help me, do NOT eat those fiber bars- my poor stomach blew up like I was pregnant!
5. Miralax. take it every night for 6 months. did it and it got me back on track (works and is safe for/ with children too)
6. magnesium citrate if you are impacted. I did xrays and ultrasounds of my stomach (very expensive) to find out I need a dollar bottle of magnesium citrate from CVS. try the lemon kind with some sprite. - this is not meant to be done very often though. only if you are impacted. if you are impacted regularly, go to the doctor!
sad, but you have to change your diet. lots of water, fruits and vegetables, salad, try to stay away from red meat (hard to digest)... stay away from breads, sweets, cheese, all the good stuff!
exercise (walking is great) and flaxseed oil. hope that helps someone. constipation is so miserable!
#256 - golden - 07/09/2011 - 22:43
AND google foods that make you constipated and stay away from them. like popcorn can constipate you- never would have thought... and chew your food... strange but true. make sure you chew all your food up before you swallow it.

When i visit a blog, chances are that I notice that most blogs are amateurish. On the contrary,I have to say that you have done a good job here.

about constipation
#259 - Sumanth - 08/07/2011 - 07:18
I read every word on this page and many other sites but I am yet to find anyone with my problem. Done all tests, seen so many docs, even cleveland clinic and mayo clinic and no help.

I have 5-6 bowel movements daily (last 5 yrs). They are semi well formed and many times undigested food and blackish and thin.

It takes a VERY long time to pass stools so I spend 2.5-3 hrs in toilet daily and cant go anywhere. I ear simple vegan diet and have always had a lot of clean water. I am lactose intolerant so just have yogurt and I am not gluten sensitive.

I have tried so many natural remedies and I think more important than fixing constipation, I think I need digestion support. I have tried, enzymes, probiotics - you name. Experimenting with hydrochloric acid and pepsin but not help.

Please if anyone has similar situation and something worked, please post.

I've been suffering from constipation for 2 years and it's the worst thing that can ever happen. I don't have the urge to go to the toilet and this could easily last up to 5 days.

So for every 2-3 days, 20 minutes before my dinner, I will drink a cup of prune juice (250ml). Then have my dinner. I must have hot soup/hot drink to accompany the meal as well, so that it "heats" up my stomach and makes me want to go to the toilet faster. The urge to go to the toilet usually comes within an hour, or if it's fast, immediately after the meal. You WILL release everything that's in there. It definitely worked for me for the past 2 years.

But for the past 3 weeks, the prune juice didn't seem to work. The stool was so difficult to come out. It's hard and sticky. Lots of straining. I drank lime juice, ate spicy food to stir my stomach, even tried the brown sugar with cold water method. None worked.
That's it. I'm only 19! I turned to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine).

The physician told me that my large intestine is "heaty" (Go wikipedia and search 'heaty' and 'cooling' terms in TCM), causing the stool to be hard and 'reluctant' to get out. I was told to avoid deep fried/fried/spicy/hot food, and given packs of medicinal powder to drink 2 times a day after meal. At the same time, told to take fuits and veggies/drink plain water regularly. I was told it will take some time before I stop relying on the medicinal powder and get back my regular bowel movement.

Yes, indeed, it worked. It just worked normally. You will just have the urge to go to the toilet, just like any healthy beings do.

For the first 2 days after drinking it, I began to pass out stool. Still hard, but at least, I got everything that were stucked, out. Then for the next few days, my bowel movement got back to 'normal'. I reduced to drinking one packet a day. I will have the urge to go to the toilet at least twice every day.

It's not that I don't trust our 'Western' doctors out there. But everytime I tell them about my problem, they prescribe suppositories and tell me to change my diet. Eat a lot of fruits and veggies and drink lots of water (Not like I have not been doing...). And that's all about it they could do. But taking fruits and veggies is just not the immediate cure to getting the stool that had been stuck in there for days, smoothly out. Sufferers would know what I mean.

Of course, I don't know what the medicinal powder is, but if you believe in TCM, do look for one, see what may be wrong with your health/body and let the physician prescribe you medicine suitable for you.

I hope it helps!

I have suffered from constipation since I was a toddler. Apples make me go to the throne within 2-4 hours after I eat the apple. If you don't have apples but have apple juice that works great too. I drink it not to cold. I take it out of the fridge like 20 mins before I want to drink it.

Slow metabalism due to thyroid disease was problem one. Doctor put me on Medifast diet which gives you 100% of fiber, minerals and vitamins. Have not had a regular BM in years. They are telling me not to take any extra fiber because it can bind you up if not passed. GUESS WHAT? Flaxseed oil caps and fish oil caps taken together have me running to the potty. It is safe to take daily and has no cramping side effects. Thank you Lord for an answer. Good luck to all who have this issue.

Ok for all of you taking pain pills out there, if they cause constipation and more pain why do you take them? it is kinda ironic..... anyways, i found that green tea and corn really helps.... if i eat 2 cobs of corn for brunch, than i can eat 4 slices of pizza and go out just fine :)

Hello everyone: I have had a terrible time with constipation, but I have a remedy that will help everyone. This remedy is safe at anytime. It is the sea salt flush. This method cleanse the entire digestive track. This is an all natural remedy. It cleanses the entire intestinal track by pulling out built up toxins.

First make sure you have lots of toilet paper and air-freshener spray. You will be going to the bath room frequently.

This is the recipe
2 level teaspoons of natural sea salt ( no substitution or it will not work) sea salt is less the $2 dollars at Walmart.

32 oz of Purified Drinking Water ( no substitution or it will not work) this is also at walmart for a little more then $2 for a gallon.

Heat the water on the stove, do not boil, just to lukewarm temperature for drinking.

Have the 2 teaspoons of salt ready in a 32 ounce container, pour lukewarm water over the salt, mix well.

Drink the sea salt mix all in one sitting, I have a little bit of the purified water on ice just to sip to get the taste of salt off my tongue, this is just for sipping and not for drinking. Some people have a hard time drinking salt water but I imagine it as a salty soup broth, and it really helps. It really is not that bad.

Once you drank all the sea salt mixture, go and lay down for 30 straight minutes on your right side. This help get the sea salt mixture from the bottom of the stomach to the small intestine that is locate at the lower right side of the stomach. Once the thirty minutes are up. Get up and go about your business. but stay close the bathroom. In about an 1 to 2 hours or sooner for some you will start to eliminate the sea salt mixture.

You may eliminate some solid pieces, but more of a water elimination. This is because the sea salt solution has help soften the hard feces that accumulated in the bowel.

Remember this is safe at anytime. I use it twice a month. I had done wonder for me. It will even help to use during a weight loss program to keep every working.

Hello Everyone again.

One thing I forgot in my last comment about the Sea Salt Flush. It is important so I hope you get this comment. I apologize for not including it earlier. Here It is :

YOU can not heat the purified water in the microwave, because it changes the molecular structure of the sea salt solution. I will not work!!! Good Luck!!!! This will help everyone.

Try one teaspoon of epsom salts in a glass of water, if still constipated try two teaspoons.
Put the one or two teaspoons in a glass of water, stir & leave for an hour or so to soak until properly dissolved, then drink the bitter fluid quickly & wait for about 40 mins for your stomach to really work.
I believe that taking manesiam/ B6 tablets regulary keeps your stomach working, apply the dosage that suits you. Hope this information helps.

Hello to Siris, thanks for your comment but where is that located, in America? You see, I live in Australia and I'm not sure if that is available here, but I will try to make inquiries from the health shop, thanks. I have tried castor oil before and almost all the ideas mentioned above, they all worked for a while then it stop.

Worst constipation he has ever had and it really worked!!!!!!

I have had CHRONIC constipation my entire life, and I don't mean episodic constipation but something I live with every day. Have had a rectal fissure due to the extreme straining. The best thing I've found is to drink baking soda in water every morning, maybe a tablespoon to a cup of water. It flushes my system and makes me feel fresh. Best thing I've ever done for myself!
#283 - Natal - 02/19/2012 - 17:39
hey guys i also have really bad constipation and the thing that helps me is 1/2 tablespoon of epsion salt mixed with enough hot water just to get it down and chased with something hot to drink. give it about an hour and you will start to go then you might go 3-4 then it should b over with. hopefully this helps.. oh yeah this doesnt taste good at all i, sorry
#284 - meg - 02/21/2012 - 14:54
Thanks to all of you who gave other ideas. But miralax is not available. I alternately using enema and some other medicine at the moment. My cabinet is full of different medicine but some doesn't work. I will try baking soda (Natal's comment) see if it works for me. Epsom salt works at first but not anymore.

The answer may be in some cases to look at what one is eating rather than at what one should be eating additionally to fix the problem. If one is using a hell of a lot of coffee, as an example, then no remedy may work if coffee is the problem. Keep in mind that there may be more than one food/beverage causing the problem. A complete change of diet, if possible, then if that has fixed the problem then reitroduce a food group from your previous diet, one only, and observe the results. It's more than probable that the principals of allergies applies. That a particular food or combination of foods is a having an allergic type reaction in the bowels. If a complete change in diet is not practical then eleminate a single food for at least 3 months and observe. If no result then eliminate another as well for 3 months and so on. My recent problem in this department is most likely due to a total lack of greens, fruit, excess coffee and a sitting for 8-14 hours a day in front of the computer and factory produced foods and the preservatives in them. Preservatives, one of the great hoaxes on humanity by those that need to make lots and lots of dollars. This is my pennies worth!
#294 - Alf - 06/15/2012 - 19:33
In australia they make dunny seat some 420mm high. The makers thinking is on par with what get flushed down. But here in aussie land they make the front door of a house only 800mm wide to discourage people from owing sofas and large fridges so it's not surprising that toilet seats are 300mm higher than they should be. Squatting in the feild is the most natural height you bottom should be.

It's been three days for me now. I've eaten a whole bag of prunes, dranked smooth move tea,two bowls of steel cut oatmeal and dranked a allon on water. All in three days, no luck.

if all good ideas written above fail----just continue fasting with warm water--- till you feel BM----dont take any other thing--- simply fasting will help you with in 12 to 24 hours. Thus fast once a week , without fail.
#297 - dadajii - 10/19/2012 - 00:04
This doesn't always work for me but sometimes I eat a serving for 2 of oatmeal and I mix in dark brown sugar. For me it's a real hit and miss but any relief is nice to have riight?
Also when I use Ducolax I take 2 tablets at a time, one just doesn't do the trick.
Lastly, I have not tried it myself but I have read that using warm water as an enema can help.

Good Luck to all I truly know how painful it is.

God Bless

This morning I was hurting so bad, I couldn't walk. I took three stool softners, then one hour later four tsps of castor oil. Within an hour, my bowels were moving again, ang I feel much better. Now I am drinking a cup of warm water with lime juice and salt, to keep it moving, but the castor oil was what really did the trick.

Hello..I have tried many suggestions on here and they have worked very well. However, all of these have only cleaned me out as I have taken them. My system doesn`t go back to being normal, so everytime I want to go, it`s induced, not naturally. Any thoughts as to why my system doesn`t go back to normal? Thank-you

drink half your body weight in ounces of water everyday and more if you drink coffee or tea or other diruretics. chew your food thoroughly. eat no packaged food - keep it real. candida can cause constipation. follow anti candida diet. MAGNISIUM up to 1000 mg a day. not oxide as it is too powerful and doesn't address magnisium deficiency. (it all poops out) try citrate caps spaced morn and nite (i use thorn). add green caps of grasses. (is use research labs) vitamin e and my wonderful perfect drink is a fresh cucumber in the blender with the juice of a fresh lemon, raspberries and stevia. - all anti candida and the only fruits allowed except for a green apple which is too sour!

Do you eat when you are severely constipated? I've had this problem for six days and it seems there's no room for anything else to go in.

try squeezing softly around the butt in a stop/go movement near to the [@], pull gently the two sides of the cheek, stretch back in a lying position these should be done together if possible or in turns.laxative helps but u don't want to be dependent and also the finger on the chin. I suffer with hard stools if I don't go. VERY STRANGE, I had my gall bladder removed and after that no problems, I had soft stools sometime like diarreah but in a gd way from 1973 to 2010. now all this has changed, back to constipation not too bad at first but gradually now, its getting worse but those little motions help me. don't know why the hard stools now but I am going to have a colonoscopy done soon to see why the change.

actually the constipation reliever remedy is different for each person.. for some, its milk, for others its wheat and for some others it might be green tea or honey and the list goes on.. a chronically constipated should rule out the main causes ( lack of water , less fibre in food, more fats white flour white rice etc) and then try to figure out what suits him/her, it may take some time but it pays.. so help yourself finding out what suits you.. for me, its fibre, water and all organic.. all the best!!
