What is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is largely known by the name of teeth bleaching or dental bleaching. Dental bleaching is a common procedure in general dentistry, but takes an important place in cosmetic dentistry. According to the Federation of Dental Association, bleaching whitens the teeth beyond the natural color. Generally, the deciduous teeth of a child are whiter than the ones that follow. With passage of time, adult teeth experience change in color because of changes in mineral structure, eating habits, food goods, tobacco, etc. Some medications can also cause tooth enamel to lose its brilliance, shine, and color. Dental bleaching is not recommended for children under the age of 16, as the process could irritate the pulp or cause it to become sensitive. The procedure is also not recommended in pregnant or lactating women. Usually, tooth whitening does not change the color of fillings and other restorative materials, which means it does not affect porcelain, dental gold, or other ceramics, but can show some effect on restorations made with composite materials, cements and dental amalgams.

Generally, whitening potential can be easily assessed holding a white printer paper next to the teeth. If teeth look yellow, the stains are like to be superficial, and can be removed using whitening procedures. In case the teeth look grayish, there are chances that the discoloration is inside the teeth and bleaching would not be able to help a great deal.

Why Teeth Whitening?

Change is inevitable. With passage of time, everything deteriorates. White color of your teeth is also prone to change, but depends a lot on your lifestyle and diet. With age, the enamel on teeth becomes thinner and more transparent. As a result of this, the inner layer, called dentin, looks darker. Your eating habits, brushing habits, and a lot more contributes to color of your teeth. Colored liquids that you consume throughout your life also play a vital role in color of your teeth. The most common agents that can push you to undergo a dental whitening procedure are tea, coffee, cola, red wine, cigarette, and tobacco. Chewing, smoking, and consuming tobacco products causes teeth to lose their normal shine, color, and even strength. Moreover, there are times when some fragments of certain colored foods get stuck in your mouth for a longer period of time. Such fragments can cause the teeth to get colored or yellow in long run. In addition to all this, improper brushing habits can result in teeth getting stained and yellow.

Therefore, to get whiter teeth, one has to undergo dental whitening procedure from time to time.

Different Types of Teeth Whitening Methods

Per ADA (American Dental Association), dental bleaching can be done in clinic by a professional dentist, at home by the patient using different bleaching methods, at home by patient using over-the-counter bleaching methods, and using non-dental options usually offered at kiosks, spas, salons, etc.

All in all, largely, these methods can be classified into two broad categories teeth whitening by a professional dentist and teeth whitening using various techniques at home.

Home Remedies for Teeth Whitening

Following are different home remedies for dental bleaching:

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an excellent whitening agent. Its whitening properties make it an excellent dental bleaching agent. This natural acid neutralizer has been used since ages to get whiter teeth. One just needs to brush his/her teeth in a regular manner and get some toothpaste and baking soda on a cotton swab. Next, rub the mixture on your teeth and leave it for 5 minutes. Rinse and brush again in a regular manner. Repeating this on a regular basis can result in significant whitening of teeth. Not only white, you will also find your teeth to be smoother after this remedy.

White Truffle Oil

Truffle oil has properties to reduce yellowness present on the teeth, and make them whiter and shiny. All you need to do is just dip your toothbrush in white truffle oil and put some toothpaste on it. Brush your teeth in regular manner. Repeat the process at least three times a day after meals. You will notice considerable difference in color of your teeth with less of yellowness. Slowly and steadily, the yellowness disappears, resulting in white, shiny teeth.

Warm Water

This is one of the most common methods to get milky white teeth. Warm water does not let settle any impurities on the teeth. It washes away all the impurities, layers, leaving behind white, shiny teeth. Brush your teeth as in a regular manner using warm water. Also, rinse your mouth with warm water. Gradually, it will improve color of your teeth.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide's cleansing nature makes it an excellent agent to whiten the teeth. Just dip your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide and brush your teeth in a regular manner. Make sure you do not swallow the peroxide. Once done, rise the mouth with warm water. It is one of the most common and largely used methods to get white teeth.

Olive Oil

Olive oil has been known to have properties to reduce stains on the teeth. It is especially beneficial for people who have developed stains on their teeth because of excessive smoking and tea/coffee. All you need to do is to just put some olive oil on a washcloth and rub it on the stained teeth. The process will return a considerable shine and color in your tooth.

Whitening Toothpaste

Using a whitening toothpaste on a daily basis can help a great deal in this case. Crest Weekly Clean is a good product because as contains heavy silica ingredients that work to brush the stains away pretty easily.

Whitening Strips

Most of the over-the-counter teeth whitening strips contain a peroxide-based whitening gel to brighten teeth. These whitening strips, if used on a regular basis, can make your teeth pearly white. Crest 2-Hour Express Whitestrips work excellently as they are made with an advanced-seal, no-slip technology that allows you to talk, drink water and go about your day while the strips are on.

Wood Ash

Wood ash contains potassium hydroxide, which makes it an excellent agent to whiten teeth. As only hard wood ash contains significant concentrations of potassium hydroxide, one can find it difficult to use it on teeth. The method should be used within limits as harshness of the potassium hydroxide can damage teeth over time.

Sea Salt

Sea salt combined with water or cider vinegar can do wonders with your teeth. The remedy will probably brighten teeth a bit, but no more so than a commercial application. Just make a mixture and apply on teeth for 5 minutes or so. Make sure you do not use this method repeatedly as it may cause you to experience tooth damage through decay or increased sensitivity.

Basal (Tulsi)

Tulsi leaves when mixed with dried rind of orange can also help in whitening the teeth. The properties of tulsi and vitamin C make the mixture an excellent cleansing and whitening agent. Just take dry 15 to 20 leaves of tulsi and dry rind of one orange. Make a mixture and use as a tooth cleaner. You can mix it in your toothpaste and apply.

Crushed walnut can act as a natural whitener for teeth. In addition to this, the remedy can also prevent teeth yellowing and formation of bacteria. Just crush some walnut and rub it on the teeth gently using your finger. Do not rub it hard as it may damage the gums.

Strawberries are rich in nutrients that reduce yellowness of teeth. The fruit has been used since ages to get white teeth. Just take 2-3 strawberries and grind them to make a paste. Use this paste to brush your teeth on a regular basis. Result will appear in few days.

Orange Rind

Orange rind has teeth whitening properties and is therefore an excellent agent to whiten teeth. Dry the rind of a single orange for a day and rub its inner portion on teeth. It is an effective remedy that shows results in first week.

Sage (salvia) Leaves

Sage leaves have properties that reduce yellowness and promote whitening of teeth. In addition to this, these provide shine and strength to the tooth enamel. Brush stained teeth using sage leaves on a regular basis. Regular application will result in sparkling white teeth.

Diet for Teeth Whitening

Strawberries can help whiten teeth as they contain an enzyme called malic acid. Malic acid dissolves yellow layer and impurities, resulting in white shiny teeth. Eating strawberries on a regular basis and rubbing it on teeth while eating can be a beneficial idea to whiten teeth. Just leave the juice on your teeth for one minute and then rinse with water. In addition to this, fiber in strawberries also behaves as a natural cleaner by removing bacteria from the teeth and mouth.

Raisins can help to keep teeth white by stimulating production of saliva, which, in turn, naturally helps to rinse away plaque and impurities. Make sure you do not let raisins stick in between teeth as it can help formation of cavities. Rinse your mouth immediately after having raisins.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits like oranges and pineapples can also stimulate the production of saliva, resulting in dissolving and rinsing plaque. These can be pretty useful in whitening of teeth in longer run. Rinsing teeth with 1:1 water and lemon juice solution once or twice a week can help. Remember, overdoing it can result in damage to the teeth.

Yogurt, Milk and Cheese

Dairy products contain lactic acid and calcium which has power to decrease gum diseases and maintain healthy development of teeth. Therefore, it is advised to consume more milk products to get strong, white, shiny teeth.

Preventive Measures

Following are some of the preventive measures to reduce staining or promote whitening of teeth:

  • People who have painfully sensitive teeth to cold/hot beverages and sweet food should not do their own whitening. Also, people with crowns, fillings and enamel seems more gray than yellow should not resort to whitening measures on their own.
  • Avoid excess of coffee, tea, and dyed beverages. These contribute to make your teeth yellow.
  • Brush thoroughly after every meal, if possible. This prevents sticking of any food particle in mouth and formation of bacteria, which, in turn, cause yellowing of teeth.
  • Avoid high-dosage antibiotics for long durations as they can lead to discoloration of teeth. Tetracycline, if taken for longer duration, can result in yellowing of teeth.
  • Avoid excess sugar, tea, coffee, and deep colored soybean paste as they can give stain in the teeth.
  • Do not scratch the stains using fingernails.
  • Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol to prevent yellowing of teeth.
  • Use a straw while sipping dark beverages; it allows the food dyes to bypass teeth altogether.
  • Avoid chewing tobacco or tobacco-containing products.

Other Treatment Methods for Teeth Whitening

Regular brushing definitely helps in whitening the teeth. Regular and thorough brushing does not allow impurities to settle in mouth, which result in formation of yellow layer over the teeth. Regular and thorough brushing with a good-quality whitening toothpaste is one of the most effective methods to get white, shiny teeth.

Bleaching Strips

Bleaching strips are again very helpful in providing white and shiny teeth. Bleaching strips are loaded with bleaching agents that act far more quickly than any home remedy or brushing technique. These strips show their effect in an hour of application, and can be used fortnightly or even monthly to maintain white and shiny teeth.

Bleaching Pen

It is another method for teeth whitening. Bleaching pen, again, contains bleaching agent, generally carbamide peroxide which reacts with water to form hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a well-known teeth whitening agent that dissolves impurities and reduces yellowness of teeth, rendering them white and shiny.

Bleaching Gel

Using a bleaching gel is another effective method to get white and shiny teeth. The gel (carbamide peroxide) reacts with water to form hydrogen peroxide, which reduces yellowness and helps teeth to give a whiter appearance.

Bonding can mask tooth stains go give a whiter appearance. In this, a thin coating of composite material is applied to the front of teeth and then cured with a blue light. A veneer can also mask tooth discoloration.

#30 - # 31-Dube-02/12/2008 - 12/02/2008 - 14:40
Use hydrogen peroxide. I use it, it kills germs and bad breath, and polishes the teeth. Also get cayenne pepper and burn it; use the ash on your teeth. Parsley is great, too.
#31 - Shelinda - 12/11/2008 - 13:59
People please DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide or bleach for crying out loud! Bleach is obvious why you should not use it. Although hydrogen peroxide does whiten your teeth it is carcinogenic to your oral tissues. The studies show that using it frequently can lead to cancer of the mouth.

Also anything sugary like honey, strawberries should not be used as well because although they may whiten, (I have not seen this but some on this board it worked for them) if you use this frequently you will develop cavities in the areas that you use it.

Finally, no lemons either as the acid is not good for the enamel. Be sure to ask your dentist or dental hygienist what remedies work if you want to go the natural they always say, ask a professional.
#32 - HygienistInFlorida - 12/20/2008 - 19:36
when you say charcoal do you mean the store bought charcoal for bbq's??? please be more specific. thank you!!!
#33 - needtoknow - 12/21/2008 - 22:20
i thank you all for the tips but i think i'll use salt and baking soda together while if that doesn't work then i'll rinse with diluted hydrogen peroxide 2x a week or less. cause apparently from your experiences its not wise to use hrogen peorxide undiluted with anything else like baking soda is just taboo and out and out wrong. THANKS!!!!
#34 - lydzin barbados - 01/07/2009 - 11:45
i once heard that britney spears uses lemon juice and baking soda a couple times a week to make her teeth whiter, and we have all seen her pearly whites. although it might not be a bad idea to try i cant imagine that it would feel good or be good for your teeth.
#35 - ashley p - 01/07/2009 - 23:15
Ugh, has anyone actually TRIED using baking soda and is the most awful taste. It's indescribable. I've tried it and i literally gagged a bunch. If you can stomach that kudos to you.

My friends always calls me names because i have yellow teeth. I want something that will get rid of it fast. Not instantly but maybe a week maximum.
#41 - chpinky08 - 01/15/2009 - 15:58
Baking Soda is great because it removes all acid. Salt will kill the germs and make your teeth healthy. BUT DO NOT FORGET that brushing your teeth is the number one cause of getting sick. The reason is because the tooth brush makes cuts in your gums and germs enter into your blood. So be sure to use mouth wash (antiseptic) before and after you brush your teeth. Baking soda may also cure pink eye, 1 tsp with 2 cups water and wash the eye three times a day. Make stroger if you like.
#42 - Shane711 - 01/26/2009 - 12:18
ketchup=sugar? i think charcoal and baking soda ar your best bets.
#43 - tapac - 01/29/2009 - 03:39
The baking soda & peroxide mix will have your gums tender & sore. So much that you can't bear to use it. Not worth it
#44 - diablo0079 - 02/07/2009 - 09:03
Please do not read all this stuff and keep trying.. specially the ones like soda , peroxide .. use natural things fruits or vegetables to cure anyproblemm... no chemicals try to avoid them completely...
#45 - Vanita Albina Fernandes - 02/09/2009 - 02:15
well...i dont think any of these work.. however i will try the extra [@] olive oil... seems to be interesting! What i think is best is the 5 minute speepd whiting gel for any grocery store, like walgreens or some place like that... hope it works! it did for me!
#46 - sugasuga - 02/13/2009 - 14:26
I am very pleased with my results that i got from my own remedy. I know that the white color based chemicals in hydrogen peroxide
react and turn a brighter, whiter color when under a black light (purple looking color).

Brush teeth with normal tooth paste but poor a little bit of peroxide on to your tooth brush.
Wash hands. Take your finger and smeer peroxide on it. Rub on teeth fronts only. Take the black light and hold it up to youre teeth for 5 minute periods. Repat 3 times.

Make sure you don't swllow any peroxide, can lead to bad coughs. Read Label on peroxide container for precautions.

You will Definetely See Results within The first Time you try this.
#47 - Alexandra - 02/17/2009 - 20:11
If baking soda will make your gums tender then why is it in some tooth paste? The crest I bought has it in the tooth paste.....hummm....IDK I but I did use a q-tib to rub some peroxide and baking soda...I only did it once and could tell a small difference. good luck with the pearly whites everyone! :-D
#48 - KRISSIE - 02/20/2009 - 19:48

Listerine Whitening for pre-brushing rinse works well. My daughter had her teeth whitened by the dentist, and she maintains it with that. She had that whitening done 3 years ago. (Colgate Trays).
However, my son broke off a portion of his two front teeth so dental whitening, he could not do. I bought this Listerine Whitening for him. He uses it 1 to 2x a week (maintainence). But, if you want really great results do 2-4x a day until you get your desired results (then 1-2x a week to maintain).
1. Brush your teeth, normally.
2. Mouthwash normally (with Listerene Whitening).
3.get a very small dish and pour a little in the dish. Place your toothbrush in the Listerine and brushing on your teeth directly.
4. You will feel and SEE an immediate difference -:)
5. NOTE: this will not work with regular listerene. It MUST be the Listerene Whitening!
6. Hope it works for you, because we use it consistently.
7. He had braces for a very long time and he gets comments that he teeth are so pretty and clean they look fake. (he hates that comment. LOL)
#53 - Mom~ - 03/07/2009 - 08:29
Whatever you do, don't use those new aquafresh whitening trays. Veryyy limited results for me.
#54 - Abby - 03/07/2009 - 15:32
To whiten teeth use activated charcoal not charcoal briquettes. You can purchase it in Whole Foods, Wild Oats. Just about any Drugstore should carry it.
#55 - Peggie - 03/07/2009 - 19:58
Put a little baking soda in the palm of your hand. Add a little toothpaste. Using your tooth brush, mix well. Brush your teeth as usual, but don't rinse for ten minutes or so. Your mouth will tingle. Rinse well. Then put a little olive oil in the palm of your hand. With a q-tip, apply to your teeth and gums. This will keep the next cup of coffee from restaining your teeth. Don't forget to disinfect your tooth brush with a squirt of vinegar from a spray bottle.
#56 - Hannah - 03/07/2009 - 20:17
ok, someone please answer this: how will i know its working? people r saying dont use lemon because it wears away enamel, and people say dont use baking soda because it gives u ulsers... so what do i use and when will i start noticing a change?:-o
#57 - Ashlea - 03/09/2009 - 20:44
Of course brushing your teeth is a GREAT way to prevent spots and decay, but what if you've already got them ? well, drinking water and eating crunchy fruits ( which wears away dirt ) is a slow process but really works, in a natural and more healthy way ! But using a toothpaste with peroxcide and plenty of it, is realllllyyy efficient ! Lightly brush in a circular motion for two minutes and enjoy your beautiful smile.
*A kind smile looks amazing on everyone and brightens your entire face and emphasizes your eyes, so SMILE !

#59 - amy - 03/16/2009 - 01:23

every 4 hours for two days :P
#62 - Jeffrey - 04/07/2009 - 16:06
Well, yes, baking soda and peroxide are both ingredients in toothpaste...but it's a VERY small amount of each one. However, using it like this calls for unbearable pain.

Leave it to the Experts... If everyone keeps makin things at home... those ppl that rely on us to buy their whitening gels etc will have no business!!! :-(... think about the economy pplzzzz :)

But very good tip :-D
#65 - Shaby - 04/20/2009 - 23:22

Clorox? are you Effin kidding me? I'm not putting that sh*t in my mouth...

Charcoal?...that store bought stuff is infused with all kinds of harmful chemicals and LIGHTER's ok to cook with...but you're not supposed to eat it!..not to mention that charcoal is a rock...the reason it's whitening your teeth is cause you're basically just eroding the outer layers...

ketchup = brainer here...DON'T USE

and didn't any of you do that experiment in school with baking soda and peroxide? I'm pretty sure that it ended with the bag exploding! this is why it's bad for your gums...chemical reaction that produces gasses...

how bout we all just try BRUSHING!...and FLOSSING...and using a good toothpaste (with a whitener) and a good mouth rinse...(things that are all natural are obviously better...while the alcohol in listerine keeps your mouth free of germs)...

BRUSH BRUSH BRUSH! If you must, try a whitener from the store...or just let the dentist do it! It's worth the mondo bucks to have brilliant movie star teeth if you want them that bad...

#66 - Librerin - 04/27/2009 - 01:20
hey #65 if you dont need in of this then why in the effin are you doing in this page!!! Get a effin life!!! :-)
#67 - Shelby - 04/30/2009 - 12:59
Amy did you say why not use clorox? It's BLEACH. Drink it then genious then go to the hospital and get your stomach pumped. It says on a bottle of bleach Do Not Ingest, Do Not Drink. Rubbing the inside of an orange peel is a good quick trick but mixing a small amount of toothpaste and baking soda or peroxide for 5 minutes works well just rinse after using as it tastes really bad. and don't swallow it
#68 - V - 05/02/2009 - 23:09
I am ok with a little yellowing as I grow older.
Listerine, Arm & Hammer, Crest.... all still test on animals. Would you stick tubes and electrodes to your dog or cat to give you white teeth? If no, live with your aging teeth. If yes, go hang with Michael Vick. Cruelty is cruelty in my book.
#69 - living yellowish - 05/05/2009 - 09:56
NO HOUSEHOLD BLEACH. shouldnt joke about that, someone will use it!!!!
#70 - c - 05/11/2009 - 15:10
soda and aquafresh ectreme cleen whitening works well, plus soda cant do any harm, it sonly sturns into salt and water when mixed with acid, really, its pintless to mix lemon and soda together

use a raw potato, a teaspoon of sea salt, a teaspoon of baking powder and 2 tablespoons of cod liver oil. rub the potato in the mixture of oil, baking powder and salt and then on your teeth. You will have a beautiful smile within the week!
#72 - rukidding - 05/18/2009 - 14:27
Hi there, you see, the problem is that I read a remedy, and I'm like- I'll use that one. Then that gets contradicted, also I have to find another one. Then that gets contradicted, and you get the point... So can you please give me the right one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the most sensible one is the olive oil one.
Thnx- a random person
#73 - a random person - 05/24/2009 - 01:36
I have used Baking soda for years, My teeth are so white it works. But you must also use toothpaste daily, I keep an extra box in the bathroom. pour baking soda in the palm of your hand ,wet tooth brush and get it pasty dip toothbrush andbrush, follow with tooth paste it works.
#74 - Ms Dee - 05/24/2009 - 05:33
I read a bunch of these and made paste of olive oil, baking soda, a dash of salt and few drops of lemon juice. I dip my brush in, scrub for a few minutes then rinse like mad and brush my teeth with the whitening toothpaste that hasn't been working. My teeth are quite white already from it, but I wouldn't leave this mixture on. It tastes pretty bad for one, and lemon juice isn't great for enamel as everyone else has said. Best part? Its way cheaper then whitening kits
#75 - MissX - 05/24/2009 - 14:01
You have to try #73!!! I tried it over the long weekend. When I came into work on Tuesday I had soooooooo many compliments. I mixed the ingredients with a wintergreen organic toothpaste.
#76 - gottaluvit - 05/28/2009 - 13:07
OMG I'm a science student and there is some really bad science going about on this page! On the comments certainly! No way is charcoal a rock, haha.
Also to kelCEE, I sure wouldn't wanna meet you - hateful, discriminatory AND unable to use apostrophes at the correct time? I don't know how you can discriminate against dyslexic people when you don't have a problem but still can't speak the language! xx
#77 - Nessa - 06/06/2009 - 06:25
WOW! So much choices to choose from. But the lemon, strawberry, peroxide, and etc. are basically not good. So is good to be on the safe side and thanks to all who warned me about them. I think I will try The olive oil.;-);-)
#78 - Vasira - 06/10/2009 - 09:02
does the extra [@] olive oil really works? Sounded the safest but cant see any improvememt after two days of using it. i use it twice daily.
#79 - blackp3n15 - 06/12/2009 - 19:26
well just one thing...! i have a teeth (mid one on the lower jaw) its doing fine - but half broken. so the inner layers Are exposed to anything i appy on.. can anyone suggest me a good remedie which would not harm tht teeth... or if i can apply anything mentioned above which wud nt harm or make my teeth more sensitive.. i think olive oil wud do.. but i need a some assurance :)
#80 - pavan shaharm - 06/15/2009 - 07:08
u guys are all hilarious :-D esp. the ones complaining about other people grammar.

Anyways, i was gonna try the peroxide and lemon juice test but after reading all the scary stuff i think THE BEST suggest is #54. However, the olive oil n baking soda sounds interesting too from #57.

Bushing regularly using a whitening toothpaste and flossing is the MOST natural and SAFEST way to have almost...almost pearly whites.
#81 - marissa - 06/19/2009 - 02:39
I drink black coffee and red wine. I have always had problems keeping my teeth white despite regular brushing-- tried sprinkling baking soda on top of my toothpaste on the toothbrush everytime, and using peroxide/ water mouthwash after brushing. My teeth became whiter quickly, and have remained that way.
#82 - Meg - 06/22/2009 - 18:07
You can use lemon juice and strawberries but you MUST brush you're teeth directly after.
#83 - Ray - 06/28/2009 - 09:26
whY not just go to the dentist get it done RIGHT STOP BEING SO CHEAP charge it on a credit card and BINGO BEAUTIFUL WHITE TEETH.....PAT 6/30/2009
#84 - PATTY - 06/30/2009 - 16:00
Patty, you must be either rich or stupid. My guess is both.
#85 - Gaz - 06/30/2009 - 18:23
well you guys i have no doubt read all of these commenst and have come to a conclution.

try every single one of these remedies and it will asnwer all of your problems.:-D

and also, hydogen peroxide is very dangerous!!
#86 - me - 06/30/2009 - 20:22
I wanna use strawberries as my remedy .But , i am supposed to eat it or use the skin of the strawberry to move against my teeth ? Or , the flesh of the strawberry ?

Need replies urgently ! Thanks !:-)
#87 - Bubble - 07/01/2009 - 04:22
I use the baking soda first, rinse my mouth out then the toothpaste, works great
#88 - ogga - 07/03/2009 - 02:24
The best remedy in my opinion would be the baking soda & peroxide. Now keep in mind that you don't really need to worry about your back teeth unless they are very very yellow. So when you apply the two, try focusing on the front 8-9 teeth, and try not to put so much to where it would overload on the gums. If you are using some type of tray or foil, load just enough to cover the front teeth, not the gums.
If you were to get the bleaching system, thats exactly what you would do with the gel, just enough to cover the front teeth & not gums.
Please please please don't use clorox bleach or the charcoal for BBQ. The bleach solution for teeth is specially made for going inside your mouth, the charcoal that people may be talking about is probably something you can find at a natural food store.
Most importantly, brush at least 3 times a day or after each meal, floss once (again, once) a day.
Hope things work out for you all.:-D
#89 - CaliDentalAssistant - 07/07/2009 - 20:53
What kind of potato. Should I use a King Edward? A Maris Piper? Or something more manageable like a Jersey Royal?
#90 - Dandy Dan - 07/11/2009 - 18:42
I used sink powdered cleanser and it worked well. So well that I only have to brush my teeth once a week.
#91 - Just Plates - 07/13/2009 - 00:03

The "All Blue" potatoes work very nicely. Sweet Potatoes or Yams work well too.
Good luck!
#92 - rukidding - 07/13/2009 - 12:39
I heard that mixing 1 egg whtite, milk, mineral water, some salt, and adding a some kind of breath mints. And then brushing with that brightens your teeth. I haven't actually tried it, but I will. But it doesn't sound reasonable. Isn't egg yucky!!!!!!!!:-o
#93 - Vasira - 07/16/2009 - 17:25
I rubbed baking soda on my teeth with a Q-tip and then wiped it off with mineral oil. it worked pretty well results in a weekish.
Also, Just Plates, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day not just once a week...that is a little gross
#94 - Nimajneb - 07/16/2009 - 21:25
First of all, I want to mention that these comments have been constantly coming in for almost 2 years now. That\'s crazy...

I tried the baking soda and toothpaste mixture and put it on my teeth with aluminum foil. I only left it on for a half hour instead of an hour, but I still feel that it worked. The only problem I had was messing with the stupid foil and getting it on my teeth right. The toothpaste/ soda mixture didn\'t taste bad, and (in my opinion) had a cool foamy chemical reaction. My teeth feel really really clean, like I just went to the dentist. I only tried in once so far, but I think after a few weeks my teeth will be whiter.

Also, I believe the reason that my teeth aren\'t as white as I want them is because of not brushing like I was supposed to when I was younger. My permanent teeth had come in and I never flossed, and only brushed them for maybe 15 seconds. Luckly, I don\'t have any cavities or other problems, but I think parents should make sure that their kids are PROPERLY taking care of their teeth. :-D
#95 - Jade - 07/17/2009 - 01:40
Using baking soda with tooth paste is the best DIY method. Hydrogen Peroxide destroys your teeth, as does other acidic substances. The best way to get your teeth whitened is to see your dentist, it may be pricey, but you obtain the best results in the long term.
#96 - simonsays - 07/17/2009 - 17:37
Different type of tooth yellowing problem caused by Penicillin medicine any remedies ? Shame none of the suggestions seem to involve G&T eh !
#97 - eclair - 07/18/2009 - 04:26
I use Baking soda and peroxide. After I had my children, my teeth were horrible. I started using baking soda and peroxide to brush my teeth. Now i have beautiful white healthly teeth. When I went to have my teeth cleaned, the dentist said my enamel is great and it doesnt take no time to clean my teeth. It was from using the baking soda:-D
#98 - connie - 07/19/2009 - 19:30
I can't believe people would be foolish enough to even consider using Clorox! It is extremely toxic! Any adult who would do such a thing probably deserves whatever they get. Any kids reading this - Do not ever put any household chemicals in your mouth! It is a good way to get yourself killed.
#99 - Natalie - 07/20/2009 - 10:21
This will probably sound stupid but I don't want to end up using the wrong thing. Is baking soda the same as baking powder?Or is it bicarb of soda?
#100 - emily - 07/21/2009 - 09:36
I have stained teeth from childhood Penicillin use too. Any advice?:-D
#101 - TiaJen - 08/04/2009 - 21:04
Baking Power is for what's used in cakes to make them rise.

You'd use Baking Soda, or bicarbonate which is the same.
#102 - DeGar - 08/09/2009 - 13:20
#91 Dandy Dan- HOW FUNNY ARE YOU! After all the trouble everyone is having getting that perfect 'hollywood smile' you come out with the classic line of ''what kind of potato do I use?'' Bahaha Absolute classic! I was only going to read #1 but got to into it when someone else mentioned that the peroxide used for whitening teeth isn't the stuff under the kitchen sink! Thanks everyone for giving me a laugh.... HILARIOUS!
#103 - BROOKE - 08/15/2009 - 06:02
Well after reading all these comments Im convinced the baking soda remedys the one that will work for me...Ive been using it 3 days now and Im noticing the difference...not so much the colouring but they feel clean...."You know that fury feelin"...its great after brushing with time will tell.....oh yeah the thing about affecting your gums.......rince,rince,rince...of course you"d burn too.....
#104 - Wiremate - 08/23/2009 - 18:58
i've used the olive oil a few times, and although i haven't seen a difference in color, my teeth feel cleaner for longer, even after i eat. good luck everyone.
#105 - katie - 09/07/2009 - 21:42
hydrogen peroxide doesn't sound safe anymore cuz of the 'cancer/oral tissue problems' and 'acid related consequences'

im getting with the baking soda & [@] olive oil and spread it on my teeth with a Q tip :D
bright smile to errrbody!:-D

i wonder how many ppl realize there are folks purposely trying to mislead others here...they are extremely lonely, their teeth are (hopelessly) yellow, or they are otherwise rejected and they just need to spread the hatred and bitterness they feel inside.

so do not underestimate the evil in "humans" who overdose on "good vs evil" television (u'r certainly no heroes). i don't have to tell u ppl do, in fact, idolize villains...

...evil = self hatred directed outwards. this is y 2nd and 3rd opinions are so valuable. ur common sense (which they think u lack) is all u need to evaluate more than 1/2 of these responses...just watch urselves. good luck, evan (doing God's work)
#109 - evan - 09/20/2009 - 16:42
Big Ted here,

I use gold fish waste mixed with juice from capers and add flour for a binder. Make a paste out of it adn scrub lightly. You teeth will be amazingly white but smell horrible. Then gargle with garlic juice to remove bad rotter fish crap smell. Duuhh use tooth paste!
#110 - Big Ted - 09/21/2009 - 14:50
im going to try the baking soda it is mentioned the most. I hope it works! have a white smile everyone:-D
#111 - ella - 09/26/2009 - 00:47
using hydrogen peroxide what percent would it be ? how would you apply it ? and isn't it dangerous if even a tiny amount is swallowed ? thankssss x
#112 - suzie - 09/26/2009 - 18:31
Hey, its taking a while for the bicarb and salt to work- i havent see any results yet. How long does it usally take to work properly? Though it does make your teeth feel nice and cleen.:-)
#113 - Julia! - 10/07/2009 - 08:44
It's kinda hard choosing one of these---so many and some claimed bad and contradicted. I decided to start using the baking soda, see how that goes, and then maybe add the olive oil. :-D ---Here goes to a hopefully whiter smile!
#114 - Jessica - 10/09/2009 - 19:35
you stupid dumbass people dont use clorox. its bad for you and you will go to the hospital because of the chemicals and die.
#115 - merry - 10/11/2009 - 18:23
The best solution is 'Dandaasa'. Its peel of a tree trunk and trust me, its been used for more than 1500 years in India to whiten teeth and still being used.
It whitens your teeth in 15 minutes of rubbing. Leaves a dark brown color on your gums for 1-2 days.
People will notice your smile for sure.

I am a supplier of Dandaasa. Leme know if you want free sample.

The most thing that i find the most effective is strawberrys. The first thing to do is mash the strawberry/s in a bowl. While brushing wiht your normal toothpaste put the strawberrys on the brush. It is really really effective you whle find immediate results. But it is important to brush your teeth straight after so your teeh stay healty and stong. By a week your teeth will be shiny like dazzling pearls!!!:-D
#117 - Me_ - 11/05/2009 - 00:58
well...i think instead of all you people being tight asses why dont youse just go to te dentist and PAY for them to get whitened rather then use home remedies that dont even work...hope that helped =D :-D

#120 - switch - 11/26/2009 - 16:42
Ok with all the "Peroxide is bad for your teeth" comments then tell me why my dentist said to use it mixed with water to help with gum disease? People have to use there heads about this. Not everyone has the glow in the dark white teeth naturally. Why in the world would you want your teeth so white that people think they are not real? Come on use some common sense. Baking soda works, although it is not an instant result and it tastes really bad it will work if given enough time. And for the love of everything holy only use it once a dayalong with toothpaste!!! Patience is a great thing to have here!!
#121 - momof5 - 11/30/2009 - 00:22
Ok.... I'm almost scared to post here. I may not be able to spell something correctly but here it is.....
Chlorox IS harmful, however, if you drink city water (or water from the tap) chances are you are drinking bleech. IF your city chlorinates their wells then GUESS what.....They chlorinate with BLEECH good old fashion Chlorox Bleech....So what I'm saying is Diluted chlorox is in every city well that has had bad test results from DNR and had to go to Chlorinated Drinking Water System...SO get over it..... Your drink Bleech daily. As far as for your teethe?????? Who knows how that'll work???? LIMIT yourself to baking soda and peroxide... It does work but you don't leave it on your teeth and gums.. Maybe brush with it ....probably not every day because it could cause sensitivity... It makes since on helping with gum disease ...thanks for the website I'm gonna check it out now..Good luck everyone...
#122 - Gwen - 12/08/2009 - 13:47
Librerin, great post. Totally agree with you.
#123 - Saudi - 12/22/2009 - 07:06
Use mustard gas ,if that dont work then at least you planks will all be dead.
#124 - dave - 12/22/2009 - 12:29
:-) Hey, i used to have really yellow teeth and its not because i didnt brush them... its because i drank too much tea. So dont be ashamed just listen to my advice. Put 5-10 drops of lemon juice and add a pinch of salt. Remember to only use a little of these. Get a q-tip and dip it in the mixture and then on your teeth. I know lemon juice ruins your gums but Im just telling you to put in on the teeth not the gums. Listen to me. I had the same problem. You will see whiter teeth in a week tops. Hope I helped. Have a nice day. ;-)
#125 - Mystery - 12/30/2009 - 12:17
For me the best method for whiter and more important healthier teeth, is to brush your teeth after every meal for no less than 2 minutes (making sure to get right at the back). Follow by flossing. Believe me brushing alone does not remove everything. Do not think of this as a chore, instead think about how beautiful your smile will be!
Good tip is to avoid drinking anything acidic or eating something too sugary i.e juice/sweets before brushing as you are just spreading that all over your teeth. Better yet drink juice through a straw as to minimise contact with teeth. As acidi will destroy your enamel. Also eat a small piece of cheese before your meal, as this will create more saliva in the mouth wich will act as a lubricant to protect your teeth from staining.

Last but not least eat plenty of hard fruits i.e apples and pears as they act like a scrub for your teeth. Sorry for the lecture:) so much to say;)
Hope my advice helps!
Thank you for your time
#126 - Julia - 01/05/2010 - 11:51
ohhh! come on people! after reading all the drama & critizicing comments i am whiplashed! i am not sure i want white teath! well congratulations to all you people you managed to keep me glued to the computer for 30 minutes! waste of time, some of you are quite funny!

#128 - valerie - 01/15/2010 - 19:44
Mix some arm and hammer with some vegetable glycerin into a paste, you can add a little salt to this mixture. Just brush normally even your tongue. Just rinse thoroughly with water afterwards as the soda will damage you gums/enamel. Works great!!!
#129 - Jay - 01/18/2010 - 22:09
The baking soda really works, wait a couple of weeks and the results are proof enough.
You clowns are something else!
#130 - Dragin [@] - 01/22/2010 - 14:50
You all have really great ideas there for whitening your teeth naturally. But here's the deal. My friend used to have teeth pale as a banana peel. Smoking & Coffee almost killed his whole jaw. After a lots of research i found a remedy. No acid, no fruits, no nuts, no sandpapers please.

Tree peel, known as 'Dandasa'. What so special about this peel? Did you all notice that ancient egyptian mummies still have white teeth, after 5000 years being burried underground. Offcourse they didn't have toothpastes & lasers back then. What were they eating/doing with their teeth? Tree peel.

This peel is found in rarest locations around the world i.e., India, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, parts of Afghanistan and southern tip of China. Its called Dandasa. I ordered a sample from India and used it on myself; gave it to my friend. 15 min of rubbing, after covering gums & inner lips with olive oil, his teeth were shining like midnight stars, viewed from Mt Everest.

And no, this is not marketing tactic. I am a student at a university in Dallas, and happened to have good connections in India to be able to import this product for personal use.

Wanna try it? Shoot me an email. I will send a sample to you. Dont worry about money.

bholasa AT gmail DOT you know what :)

Leme know if you want a small sample, try it, save some money, go green and save your Smile. Smile is one thing that will elevate yoru respect in others' eyes. Dont let it go just like that ... !

For what it's worth, here's my experience. Google "oil pulling ". It really works to firm up loose teeth, make them feel really clean and yep! it does make them whiter after about a week.

Using all these kinds of things , and going through so much trouble . and still have a "yellow Smile " is not worh it. I suggest going to the denist. Nothing is really safe these days . But I will try the white cloth and [@] olive oil or maybe the baking soda.
#136 - Goody - 03/08/2010 - 01:13
I have been using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for more than 20 yrs and never use toothpaste. My teeth are healthy and white. My mouth also feels very clean and sweet.
#137 - Barbie - 03/09/2010 - 14:29
Orange peel walnut tree bark and the 'dandasaa' all sound good. Good luck with your pearly whites everyone!

FYI to any children reading this: NEVER USE CLOROX. EVER. You WILL get sick and could possibly die. Some of you people are stupid. People DO read this and take your advice, and you are basically advising them to kill themselves. Ugh...

ok kids thats enough guesing around crush eggshell in a cofee grinder add sea salt one pinch one pinch bicarb blend with regular tothpaste totally white after three mins brushing///////////for those with caked on smoke and tea damage this is quite nasty carbonated water and marble chips(pebbles) just hold the liquid in your mouth they will fizz like hell not scrub or swallow see you in the sun :)
#140 - doc viney - 03/16/2010 - 22:44
there is NO way on EARTH THAT YOU SHOULD EVER USE PEROXIDE! You have noooooo idea what that shit can do to you. Some people make it by, but most get really bad problems. My best friend tried it and a week later it looked like her mouth had been cut up on the inside, she was in so much pain she had to take really strong painkillers, couldn't eat or drink. This is a powerful acid that can and will innahilate your gums. Baking Soda is good. Another one is Catherine Zeta Jones, who uses strawberries on her teeth everyday, she rubs them. Never even brushes her teeth. :-D
#141 - morgannn - 03/23/2010 - 11:19
hydrogen peroxide is okay but it must be diluted first, the gums are extra sensitive, so using concentrated acid will only cause harm.

I would hate to have to go to #145 for any dental care. He can't write and therefor probably can't do any dental work either. I am married to a dentist and I have yellow teeth. I am also over 60 and he tells me, it is natural. So, get over it all of you
#144 - private - 03/27/2010 - 08:51
i have just used the olive oil for the first time and can already see a slight diference so hopefully in a week! :)
#145 - regina - 03/30/2010 - 16:58
I mix bicarbonate of soda and sea salt together in a container (the same amount of each). Then when I go to brush my teeth I only mix the small amount that i'm going to use with water. Then brush continously for around 3 minutes then rub with extra [@] olive oil. Brush after every meal to avoid staining and always use mouth wash afterwards to kill bacteria. It you decide to use the hydrogen peroxide, only use it once a week when you begin to use it, using too much is the reason why it causes harm to your gums. Avoid red wine. Do not swallow hydrogen peroxide. Keep smiling :)
#146 - eb - 04/02/2010 - 09:08
Yes, try the oil pulling. I noticed my teeth were whiter after just one week. Not glow-in-the-dark white, but much improved and looking better every day. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique. Find out more about it on Curezone. I am thrilled that such a simple, healthy techniqe is making such a difference in the appearance of my teeth! Try it, you'll like it :-)
#147 - Kathy - 04/05/2010 - 00:13
+ Brush your teeth after every meal.

+ Use Mouthwash when you wake up and when you go to sleep.

+ Using Olive Oil Should Work, But I think some kind of assurance is needed, since that is not confirmed yet.

+ Don't eat dark foods and foods that leave stains.

+ Go to the dentist and clean your teeth, then maintain it by using the following above.

Hope it helps :-D ....Seriously, it's not about a one day process it's about continuesly taking care of your teeth!!!!! :-P :P
#148 - aNonYmOuS pErSoN - RaNdOm - 04/06/2010 - 05:54
don't put a couple of lemon juice drops on your tooth brush when you brush your teeth. lemon has acids that eat away at your teeth.
#149 - nancy - 04/07/2010 - 18:21
Lemon & apple cider vinegar should not be used for brushing your teeth, they are very acidic and will wear off your enamel.

ok so i drink ALOT of coffee and its bad for me for one im 15 and it stains my teeth ive tried baking soda.
this is soooo frustrating i want to have white teeth and whatnot. thank you peoples for the advice though i will try some of these things.B-)
#151 - Jessica - 04/13/2010 - 19:09
as a kid i once took a towel and rubbed it over my teeth for some reason i can't remember, and i remember that my teeth indeed felt really clean and stayed clean for a long time and even seemed whiter,
i'm 26 now and love juice so yeah some color has happened

and i find funny to read that people mention the tower/cloth thing with the oil, i dont know why you'd use oil but heck there's nothing wrong with oil! i'm back on using this method again with the oil and it feels great again!

IF this isnt gonna go fast enough for me i will try the walnut bark (not gonna go for the indian tree thing)

if that fail's i'd like to try the charcoal thing but have no clue if i understand it correctly (like .... charcoal from wood in your fireplace??)

will keep posted ... (i think)

#155 - lynn - 06/23/2010 - 17:17
Some people ignore this so don’t follow their mistakes. Brush your teeth at least 2 times per day – morning and night. But it will be really useful if you practice brushing and cleaning teeth after eating so you can maintain your teeth whiteness every time. Don’t forget to use floss as the bacteria could affect the whiteness.

why don't you just brush 3 times a day and
I promiseeee it will work (: hahaa.

Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) actually has good, safe results. I know this because I've been using it for a few weeks now (yes, it does take some time, so please be patient), and I have seen a change in the shade of my teeth. It really is not more damaging to your teeth and gums than store-bought tooth paste. Just be sure to mix it with your tooth paste, and use it only 3-4 times a week to ensure that your gums are not becoming too sensitive because of it. Yes, it has a very salty taste, but with good rinsing after the brushing, it's all better. Plus, your entire mouth feels much cleaner when you're done.

Remember, everything must be used in moderation!
#160 - illiana - 07/06/2010 - 22:02
People do not, I repeat not, use the following to whiten teeth:
*ketchup or tomatoes. Sugar+acid+sugar, etc.
*clorox. Have you read the warnings!?
*charcoal. So many chemicals wears away enamel.
*any kinds of fruits! Naturals acids in them wear away enamel. In case you didn't know, that never comes back!
If you must use something, use oh I don't know, toothpaste! Brush 3 times a day! Floss! Mouthwash! Olive oil works if you use it 2 days a week. Doesn't wear away enamel, no ulcers, no pain. And p.s. people are freakin retarded!!

Well, I tried the "activated charcoal" that can be purchased at a Health fs, or drugstore probably. It worked well, but not without a couple of pointers here. One, keep somewhat low over the sink, I got black stuff on the wall etc.. and was a tad cleaning up to do, hee he. Two, one of my teeth in front is kind of behind the rest and isn't the whitest tooth in the world to say the least. So, I tried a second time to specifically whiten it, brushing it hard and long with the charcoal powder and ended up making it REALLY not white and couldn't get it clean afterward. So, I tiptoed onto thin ice and VERY CAREFULLY put bleach on a q-tip from reading this site, and tried to clean it. It helped a little. So after rinsing profusely, I tried it again. No better. JUST BE CAREFUL, IT IS A POISON. We're not talking brushing teeth with it, just wiping it gingerly with a q-tip and rinsing it profusely. It got the residual charcoal off, but didn't seem to help with the old color, so I don't think it would work that great and be worth the DANGER! WILL ROBINSON! (heh). The 'activated charcoal' that comes in PILL FORM folks, heh, does seem to work beautifully, but if I try it again, I'll keep it away from that one tooth. I guess I just need to brush after drinking my herb tea in the morning.. . like they always told us ;).
#165 - the experimenter - 07/21/2010 - 14:37
Hey, guess what..
Instead of mixing baking soda with your toothpaste, just buy Arm & Hammer toothpaste, which already has it.

I'm going to try the salt and baking soda remedy for a little while, and if it doesn't work then I might try oil pulling or olive oil. Other than those methods, I don't trust any of these.

Fruit acids: Rot your teeth
Clorox: Toxic!

I'd rather not mess with peroxide, I realize that it's not so harmful when diluted (you shouldn't have it if it's not!), but I'd rather not take the chance when there are other options. It's probably best to ask a dentist, too.

And brushing at least twice a day is a must!!

Teeth whitening refer to the process of whitening the colour of teeth. Teeth lose its colour with age, intake of coffee, tea, smoking, sodas, and antibiotics. The mineral fluoride is also responsible for yellowing of teeth.

My BF always wondered about my white teeth, while her teeth were yellow, so she asked me. Now her teeth r white 2. Try it! Take a pic, wait 1 wk, take another-compare. C 4 ur self. You will never have to brush again and you won't have to worry about that pretty smile. I've been using household bleach applied with a Q-tip, every couple of months, for 30+ years and was advised by a Dentist that is fine so long as you don't swallow any or leave it on for more than a couple of minutes. Other members of my family do also and we all have great teeth. Use common sense and if you don't have any experience with household bleach, stay away from it.

If you can stand it.. suck on a lemon wedge for no more then 30 seconds..then without rinsing brush with Hydrogen peroxide and soda(paste) for a minute.. rinse very well with water.. then rinse with peroxide only, swish for a little bit.. brush your teeth with reg toothpaste for 2 minutes..rinse well with listerine.. rinse rinse rinse till all the grit is gone..teeth are instantly whiter..and no bad breath..finish with olive or coconut oil..

#195 - Victoria - 12/30/2010 - 16:03
I am now 35 and have sadly had yellowish teeth my whole life. I've never smoked, I don't drink tea or coffee, I brush and floss regularly and have tried a lot of the remedies mentioned like baking soda and strawberries. These remedies are meant to clean stained teeth so they didn't work for me. My teeth are just naturally yellow so there are no stains to take off. I've never had a cavity. My dentist said that some antibiotics when taken during childhood can cause the teeth to turn yellow. He also said that most people are just born with different shades of yellow teeth. I have been teased my whole life. When my 5 year old drew a picture of mommy and colored my teeth yellow, I was brokenhearted. Does anyone know what can be done that doesn't cost a fortune? My teeth aren't stained. Sadly most of the bright white smiles on tv are purchased teeth called vaneers which I believe is something they place right over your tooth. They cost over $1000 per tooth. Urg! Maybe I can find a dentist in my area who would be willing to do the work and in turn use my transformation as advertisement:)
#196 - Stacy - 12/31/2010 - 14:46
Try a treatment called oil pulling!! Not only is it good for treating other serious diseases and keeping your body and immune system stronger, but it's a great teeth whitening system too!!! It worked like magic for me!!
All you do is put 1 tbsp of SESEME or olive oil into you teeth area. DO NOT SWALLOW!!! Then swish the oil around in your teeth for a good couple minted, until the oil is white when spat out. Do this 1 or up to 3 times a day if you wish. After you spit out oil, make sure you thoroughly clean your teeth with toothpaste or the good- old finger and water trick. Also, wash the sink and disinfect if necessary cuz the oil spat out now contains alot of bacteria and dirt. And your done!! If u don't believe me google oil pulling!!!

Advice for the health concious before trying any remedy that is natural or otherwise; It is always worth doing a little research to see whether the benefits outweigh the risks.

Concerning the mixing of honey with burnt toast, which I am personally in awe of ;-) It's better to do a little research on this one. Mainly because there have been studies linking overcooked food to cancer. Whether or not carcinogens from burnt toast can enter the bloodstream via being absorbed in the mouth; I do not know, but it's worth doing the research for peace of mind.

Dear Hopelessness,

Here's the Good, the Bad & the Ugly of this thread...(my first)...

The GOOD...those dental professionals who has the inside scoop about the DANGERS of putting chemicals - sugary - acidity whiteners in your mouth...heed their advice...

The BAD...for those of us on fixed incomes...cannot afford a dentist bill/insurance...use common sense...baking soda and extra [@] olive oil...cleans and polishes your teeth...does not eat away at the enamel or cut the gums....BAD CHOICES are strawberries...lemons......RESEARCH IT.....

The is irresponsible to put any advice out here on the internet where children can access it.....try it.....and possibly die from's not's not cool...and your sense of responsibility is non-existent....PLEASE...children die everyday doing stupid things....stop contributing to those statistics.....please!
#205 - CynLee - 03/07/2011 - 06:55
I use baking soda!! I wet my toothbrush, apply tooth paste, and then stick my tooth brush in a container of baking soda so there is a thin layer on my brush. The dentist is the one who gave me this idea. They took a picture of my teeth, I started this regimen and at my next visit we took another picture of my teeth. HUGE Difference! Also – brush your teeth twice a day! (After each meal if possible) floss your teeth daily and use a mouth rinse. If you can’t brush after each meal carry a small bottle of mouth rinse with you and rinse your mouth after each meal.

#207 - SRY 2011 - 03/27/2011 - 07:12
Dear Stacy
-Salt can be used to brush your teeth. You can also try mixing salt, baking soda and water together. But be careful, because the salt is very abrasive and could cause mouth pain and weakened enamel.
-Rinse your mouth with a vinegar/water solution.
-Eat an apple after meal is the easiest and most preferable method to get rid of yellow teeth.
-Don't use your fingernail to remove tooth stains, as your teeth are not hard as a rock. Fingernail can actually scratch the enamel which will led debris to lodge in the enamel thus worsening the situation by making the tooth more prone to tooth cavities.
#208 - 1234wintergirl - 03/29/2011 - 22:48
I agree the whole teeth whitening thing is rather confusing. After reading loads of websites, what I've been using twice a day for the past week and is continuing to whiten my teeth is:

A bit of salt, baking powder and apple cider vinegar, mix into a paste on a plate with your toothbrush and gently brush teeth avoiding gums as much as possible. Sometimes I first use olive oil to cover and protect the gums and also wipe my teeth with it which also helps to whiten. Sometimes I use it after the baking powder mix instead as it seems to make them shine and feel like they have a coat of protection on them.

I have used hydrogen peroxide just 9% in place of the vinegar and I can't see how it would be that damaging to teeth considering it's sold in pharmacies to use as a mouth wash when diluted with water and is also in most home whitening kits, pens etc. but I prefer the vinegar.

My gums now when flossing don't bleed like they used to which I think is a good sign.

On one particular website a lady said her and her family have been using the salt, baking powder and vinegar paste for the past 40 years and they all have healthy white teeth.

Also, brushing with Neutrogena unscented soap, as it contains glycerin which is good for teeth whitening, has been suggested but I haven't tried it yet, (about to tonight). Never mix glycerin and hydrogen peroxide together as the reaction is damaging to your teeth, even though some home whitening kits you can buy contains both.

Also, everything I've used was approved from websites writen by dentists but of course you can't believe everything you read.

I think common sense, using with caution and care and consideration of each person's cause of discolouration is the key, I'm not recommending anything as I'm not a dentist (although even they also seem to have conflicting opinions) I'm just doing what feels right and is working for me.

an old remedy we use in ireland , jam your mouth open with a strong wooden stick. then dry out all the saliva with cotton buds and to really get it completely dry use a hair dryer on low setting of course to finish. now when all is perfectly dry use a good quality white enamel gloss paint. the type you would use on a domestic household radiator. when paint has dried after fifty three minutes remove stick from within mouth . you should now see the benefit of this amazing procedure. one coat of enamel paint should be sufficient and this process should be repeated once a month. for perfect results make sure that humidity levels do not exceed 14%. please note the irish teeth and gum advice bureau from ballymaguigan county derry can not accept responsibility for individual nutters who want to try this at home.

Okay, I read like half of these comments, anddd I ruled out all those peroxide and lemon and strawberry remedies(and CLOROX!!) I decided to try the baking soda with regular toothpaste. I think I got a whiter smile, although it could be my mind playing tricks on me (I tend to do that a lot) But I have a question, are baking soda and baking powder the same thing? 'Cause I used baking POWDER instead of baking soda. And by the way, if you're kind enough to answer my question, i'm also twelve and I want whiter teeth before I go into the seventh grade, so please be VERY specific if you're going to use big words :P

If you want to whiten your teeth and you don't want the dangers of ingesting bleach, peroxide and these other foolish things listed use 1Tablespoon of table salt 1 Tablespoon of baking soda and 1 Tablespoon of crushed dried sage. Apply this to your toothbrush, brush regularly then brush with water. The results are almost immediate to 2 days for smokers. Seriously people Bleach.

While compared to artificial teeth whitening remedies or cosmetics, natural remedies are always the best choice for people in obtaining the perfect white teeth and smile in a short time without any serious side effects and drawbacks. Also, the cost of these natural remedies is literally low, when compared to natural cosmetics.
