Veins are thin-walled vessels that carry impure blood back to the heart. Veins act as one-way valve that prevents the impure blood from flowing backwards. When these valves become weak, the blood flows back to the veins and results in congestion due to blood clots. With the congestion the veins become enlarged and this condition is known as varicose veins. The word varicose is derived from the Latin word varix, which means twisted. Varicose veins can occur in any part of the body but the most affected part is legs. The veins of the legs are divided into two systems

The deep veins that run deep to the leathery layer of fascia surrounding the muscles.

The superficial veins that run in the layer of fat just beneath the skin.

Between these two veins, the superficial veins are the ones that become varicose. The varicose veins are dark purple or blue in colour.

Types of varicose veins
  • Venous lakes These are pools of blood in the veins found on the face and neck.
  • Reticular veins These are flat, blue veins under the skin that are mostly seen behind the knee.
  • Telangiectases These are fine clusters of blood vessels reddish in color and mostly found on the face or upper body.
Causes of Varicose Veins
The various causes of varicose veins are:
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Long-standing periods
  • Lack of exercise

Hi,I am glad to find this site. I have been suffering with ecxema(stacys) for over a decade. I was sent to dermatologist and they gave me creams. Then was sent to allergy specialists.Told me to stay away from almost all food catogaries. Finally I explored the web and found out that all my problems were due to the vericose veisns. I don't know why these doctors go med school. They just bounce you from one to the other.Istarted on ACV with honey twice a day .only 4 days and I can feel the difference. I also take 3000 mg vitamin C and 800 IU Vit.E. My itching is almost under control I sleep better. My left leg below the knee including my ankles & part of my feet are dark in color and swells. i could barely walk. My wish is to wear open sandles and long skirt to go to church and kneel down to pray at the alter.I am also peddling the bike for 30 min/day..

Hey, guys, I am only 28, and I have varicose veins on my both legs. The doctor did the ultrasound, and it showed that my condition is severe. New veins start to bulge, and that upsets me very much. I wear support stockings every day. My other doctor mentioned that the horseradish extract can be helpful.

#22 - james - 06/27/2010 - 13:50
I have large bulging veins on the backs of my legs. They dont cause pain or discomfort although they look pretty gross.

I am treating them with a horse chestnut complex (with Ginko and some bark extract) twice a day and i have also increased my fibre and vegetable consumption. I am attempting to grow a Gotu Cola plant (I live in sub-tropics) which is supposed to strenthen cell walls. My guess is that it will take a while to treat naturally but I am not in a rush.

Standing for long hours as a floor manager had caused veins in my feet to become gorged. In evenings I experienced lot of pain in the feet. Doctors suggested strapping and elevation of foot for relief, but the pain still persisted. A friend told me about alternative therapies for varicose veins. Within couple of weeks after I started using the kit (Biogetica) I felt a remarkable reduction in my pain. I am amazed at the effectiveness of natural therapies even in a physical condition like mine. I feel assured the swelling will go too. The kit I am using has resonant homeopathic remedies and essential vitamins and minerals.
#28 - Erica - 08/23/2010 - 01:11
hi guys im 21 and i have varicose veins in my inner thighs. I think one of the main reasons why many women get varicose veins is lack of excercise
#29 - Jaina - 08/27/2010 - 11:42
Please do not use horse chestnut. It has an active consituent called aescin which blocks the release of the enzyme that contibutes in the damage of capillary walls. It may cause vomiting, nausea, headache, convulsion, resen respiratory and circulatory failure and it may even result in death. Instead use extract of pine bark and grape seeds. It may cause a little nausea and upset of the stomach. It contains antioxidants which strengthens the connective tissue of blood vessels. Witch hazel and apple cider vinegar works as well. Apply either one with a cotton ball three times a day.
Good Luck.

Wow, I don't feel alone now. My right leg just statred hurting real bad to the point it makes me limp when I walk. When I go to the gym or walk alot it doesn't hurt. But, if I skip a few days well there it goes again, I hate it. I'm an active person. I've had these since my late 20's. The spider ones are all on the back of my legs n I hate it. I see girls with shorts on and dresses and I am envious cause i can't wear them anymore. I wear capri shorts to cover up. the back of my legs hurt real bad at night only. Day time is ok as long as I am active. Now my legs swell up at night and it pisses me off, I even drink lots of water thinking Im not getting enough water, That does help alittle. I;m glad I found this site and wasn't going to make a comment but maybe what I say might help someone as well. I take a walk everyday no matter what and it makes my legs feel better. If it's cold out I walk around the house or I pick a time to do dance and that helps to dance to the radio =) Rub olive oil on the backs and massage in an upward motion towards the heart. If you sit on the computer like I do that makes your legs feel worse. Get up every 20 mins and just walk around get the blood flowing. I take vitamins and all that and nothing helps. When I watch TV or movies I use the kitchen chair or coffee table to elevate legs. Ok, have to get up and walk again, lol. Thank you for everyone putting there comments on it helps all of us. Good luck to everyone and I guess we are just stuck with this unfortunte vein problem. It is herditary cause eryone in my family has them, Ugh! If your legs hurt move them around that always help with blood flow. DRINK lots of WATER. Also STRECH your legs that reallly helps makes them feel better. Thanks again everyone! ;-)

I have treated succesfully my vericose veins with alternate hot and cold baths.
From my experience it is the most effective way to keep them away:)
also I take 1 garlic pill daily to help my veins stay flexible. I do also few sit ups daily to keep up good blood circulation.
Good luck for everyone trying to avoid these non pleasant veins to appear
#36 - Ninni - 12/29/2010 - 15:21
Hi I am currently 46 years old and have had these veins since I can remember when I was little my mother used rub my legs down with rubbing alcohol
at night to relieve the pain. they never surfaced until I was 16. I was always under the impression that they surface veins that were affected, oops was I ever wrong, a few years back I began experiencing trouble with strength in my legs at first gradually and then to almost nothing, I have been to doctor after doctor and it wasn't until recently that I discovered the ugly truth {forgive the bad pun}about the varicose veins. They do run deep and silently. They have tested me for all types of diseases but I am positive it is in the veins, will be starting a strict regiment. After having to close my business down due to poor health I have been doing nothing but resting and have gotten a lot of my mobility back, and hopefully after at least 6 months of following some of the advice and remedies I'll be back and about in no time.B-) is there a forum out there for those with this? If not there should be. Joe
#37 - Joe - 12/31/2010 - 09:03

#40 - shishir - 01/13/2011 - 01:16
The only home remedies you can use are:
- ice or heat for pain related to varicose veins
- compression therapy: graduated compression hose or socks worn all day, every day can help push the venous blood back up your legs and stop it backing up.
- exercise also improves the blood circulation

If they bother you a lot, go to the doctor and get them injected (sclerotherapy). You should get it checked out in any case as it may be a sign of more severe vascular disease.

I do have and use apple cider vinegar on my salad and greens maybe this is why I do not hurt. What do you think? I'll start using the apple cider vinegar on my legs and see what happens.

hi there, reading all your letters had me welling up. ive had them since 21. now 48 ive developed a leg ulcer, down to damn veins. never been able to go swimming with girlfriends, but i really sympathise with women. i feel that doctors just brush you of with being vien which is not fair, they restrict peoples lives through no fault of there own. if i got cancer through smoking, they`d take me serious. well ill give some of these ago, and all the best to you all.:-)

#55 - malen - 08/20/2011 - 12:25
hi malen! ive found the answer to ur question:

hope this works for u all:
Here is the proven cure for varicose veins:

1. Find some quality apple cider vinegar. This can usually be found at your local grocery store, and it can also be found online if you so desire.
2. Make sure that the apple cider vinegar that you buy is undiluted. This will make it an extra effective treatment option for varicose veins.
3. Take the undiluted apple cider vinegar, and apply it to the varicose veins every night.
4. Also be sure to apply your varicose vein treatment in the morning, in the same way that you applied your treatment at night.
5. Every day, mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water.
6. Drink this mixture of apple cider vinegar and water twice a day.
7. Wait about one month, and you will see your varicose veins disappear!

I hope that this guide to removing varicose veins has been helpful. Good luck to removing your varicose veins, once and for all!
#56 - jenny - 08/21/2011 - 01:51

I'm going to do the applecider vinegar, and buy a juicer and drink the raw juices. Epsom salt is on my list for baths and cold packs. Also gonna do the flex excercises and stretch. I'm a hairdresser 3 days a week. Guess I'm on my feet to much. They look so gross, uggg....

I developed varicose veins during my first pregnancy. During my second pregnancy I drank nettle leaf tea every day for the beneficial nutrients. By the end of my pregnancy my veins were better than before the pregnancy. You can buy it in bulk at herb and health food stores for pennies and brew it with a tea egg.
